I'm not saying Goths don't suck, 'cause they do. I saw a guy wearing a goth skirt the other day, it was awful...
.... but anyone can put on a suit and look nice -- ever see american psycho? I know it's a rare instance, but putting on a suit doesn't make you well adjusted. It doesn't make them a professional. Just because you don't like to dress up doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. There's a big difference between some casual dress, and being a goth, as well. Similarly, you can't suppose that because someone's a goth that they can't be an effective worker. You don't know where their quirks lie.
A suit and tie is just a different uniform than goth wear is.
Ubuntu definitely ran more quickly for me than my XP machine. Not sure where you're getting that. In fact -- I've hardly ever seen an XP machine that runs 'great'. I remember when we upgraded our windows 98 machine -- it ran amazing 650 Mhz, 128 mb RAM -- I've never seen an XP machine run as quickly as that 98 machine of mine. (Not saying it can't happen -- it's just rare.) And christ -- have you seen most manufacturer basic loads? Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. machines are frequently nearly unusuable right out of the box, because of the garbage programs that come out of the box. In fact, currently my G4 Powerbook runs (1.5 Ghz) runs more quickly than my 2 Ghz Dell with windows XP.
The fix should have been to disable the "Open safe files after downloading" option by default a year ago - Apple's failure to do this is fairly typical of a large software company trying to balance security & ease of use.
I work at help desk for my college, but it's free to students, teachers, staff, alumni (as most college help desks are, I'd assume). But anyhow, if my friends have computer problems, I help them for free.
Aside from that, art is not a job. It's ok to sell art for profit, and I don't mean to condemn those who do, however, there is a big difference between an artist selling his trade, and what the RIAA does. I'm just saying, that I wish I had musical ability so that I could give it away for free. I'd love art to be free, and if I had artist talent, I'd give my art away for free, while making money at a real job.
"It's too bad more MUSIC isn't open source, where someone writes pieces of a tune and then releases to the public domain so others can enhance and build upon the original project..."
Definitely -- I wish I had musical ability, because I'd give it away free to everyone.
His movies are not fun and watchable. John Carpenter's movies (Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, etc.) are fun and watchable, even if they are not masterpieces. But Uwe Boll? His movies are steaming piles of crap.
I love me some porn as much as the next guy, but horrible risk of viruses aside, the last thing I want is try to check my e-mail without know if I'll be inundated with porn! I'd never be able to chekc my e-mail in public or at work.
You can't search for slipstreaming if you've never heard of it. Things are only easy to find when you're a little familiar with them in the first place.
At my college's help desk, we use a combination of Mcafee Enterprise, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Zero-spyware 2005, webroot spysweeper, and whatever other tools we have...
"The BBC is reporting that more than half of Britons do not believe in evolution, with a further 40% advocating that creationism or intelligent design should be taught in school science classes.
I'm skeptical -- I really. We spent a whole philosophy class learning that Intelligent Design wasn't very strongly adopted in europe. That coupled with the fact that the vatican and many other major religious institutions reject intelligent and creationism..
Agreed. Cutscenes in RPGs and adventures, etc. are part of the experience, but in a lot of games they take you out of the action. The suffering had a great solution. All the cut scenes were real time, and you could do whatever you wanted. You could patiently wait for the guy to stop talking, or you could listen to himw while looking around and making sure no monsters were coming, or you could ignore him and be on your way, or you could even just kill him if you felt like it. It was all up to you, and all real time. Because of that, even though the cutscenes weren't elaborate, they were much more effective.
Of course video games are a form of escape. I don't sit at home and play video games all day when I'm happy with who I am and life is going swell. It's no different than all the other forms of escape that people bury themselves in... gambling, porn, prostitutes, TV, movies, books (although books tend be engaging, there's a lot of trashy literature out there.
For me, mass-video game playing is like the last resort. I'm unhappy, I'm anxious, etc, so I video game it up. If I'm happy, if I'm doing well, there's no time for mass-video-gaming... I'm too busy with work or friends or relationships. Video games become a harmless 20-30 minute a day hobby.
Agreed. I use trillian as opposed to AIM, and although I enjoy the lack of all that god-awful bundled AIM software and "features", I'm still not all that happy with trillian. I've got Adium on my Mac with is pretty great, but sometimes doesn't work for file transfers, Direct Connection, etc. There just seems to be no good IM client.
You can get pop-ups from internet explorer even if you haven't opened the program, due to spyware on the system. I had a friend with this problem. This was a fews years back when I didn't know as much about computers (today, we would have just reformatted) and we tried to fix it by uninstalling internet explorer and running netscape instead. but even with internet explorer "uninstalled" and "not running" we were getting internet explorer pop-up ads.
I think the significance here is that the zombies in doom are two-dimensional (literally and figuratively), and therefore it is easy to write them off. Likewise, the pedestrians of GTA are again, comical, two-dimensional representatives of real people, and are just as easy to write off.
But the world of Shadow of the the Colossus is vivid enough that it feels less like a video game, and more like a something real. It's easy to watch people die in Evil Dead, but terrible to watch it happen in Saving Private Ryan (which oddly, has about the same amount of gore).
I thought we already had video internet, and it was called TV. Honestly, video content is worthless. Sure, it'd be kind of fun to watch the numa numa kid in high definition with no buffering, but does it really matter? No. Is there any substance to that? Hell no. If TV is even a tiny implication of what more video content would mean, then the last thing I want is more video content in the net.
I think the significance is that while starcraft may have been wonderfully implemented, the concept was not unique -- there have been plenty of games that work more or less the same, and therefore no need for a sequel.
I was nervous you were serious for a second there ..
To me those are wonderful reminders. Maybe I'll rename them: "The joy of not being sold anything."
xp anti-spy http://www.xp-antispy.org/ has a few settings like -- among them, disabling the SP2 security center.

My Safari came with that unchecked. Anyone else?

Yep, few years, there's a whole new generation of people ready to make the same mistakes we've just learned to stop making.

I did, right after I posted. I was hoping no one else would! =P

Windows has not historically been secure. Just because an experienced user can keep it clean doesn't mean that it's secure.

Firefox: Adblock (filterset.G), NoScript (set to block flash as well)
No sound from any webpages yet!

There's no way a new format could be a "new generation in home entertainment." It's just higher resolution and copy protection. I hate being lied to.
