I highly recommend you pick up an xarcade stick. It's basically a set of arcade controls mounted on a heavy base that you plug into your pc or almost any modern game console using adapter cables. No holding stuff in mid-air, no thumbsticks, no bizzare hand gestures required.

here's a reason why I don't own a gaming console. I haven't owned one since Atari 2600. Due to my four fingers on my hands, lack of thumbs, and inablility to hold game controllers in mid air, I cannot use those console controllers very well. I have to use them on tables to hold them. This is why I do better on computer games because of keyboards, mice (small light ones like those old two/three button ones), and simple small joysticks (think of those old one/two buttons one like those old school Atari 2600 joysticks).

Here's hoping we get some other cool adventure titles like Grim Fandango and Full Throttle.

I don't begrudge anyone their Mario fetish, but do we really need Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 2, Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Classics, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Country 2, Donkey Kong Land 2, Donkey Kong Country 3, Donkey Kong Land 3, Donkey Kong 64, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, DK King of Swing, etc.? This isn't even counting all of the direct ports between systems.

Lack of third part party support is the reason why I personally consider the Gamecube a failure, if they can turn that one around and get plenty of third parties, even when it are just small developers, the Wii definitvly would get quite a bit more interesting.

Those Sheffield bobbies should really petition ebay for IP's, I smell a CRIME.

It's a pretty big issue if you play a lot of import games. It's now illegal over here in the UK to sell mod chips (not sure if it's illegal to buy them from overseas and fit them yourself, but that's probably beyond most users' technical ability anyway). Importing is probably a bigger issue in Europe than the US, since the releases usually go Japan > US > Europe, we're often left waiting a hell of a long time for our gaming fixes (along with the knowledge that we're only waiting so they can charge us 50% more than the rest of the world pays).

You're quite right. Especially for a $400 console, the Saturn should have come with something. Especially after the PR disaster that was SegaCD/32X. That was basically the end of Sega right there. The Dreamcast was a great attempt at a comeback and (technically speaking) should have succeeded, but Sega just didn't have the capital to compete with Sony after the failure of the Saturn.

AFAIK the Jaguar shipped with Cybermorph, and the 3DO shipped with various pack ins depending on the manufacturer, which it damn well should have for a retail price of close to $700 at launch. (Gex for Panasonic, Shockwave and FIFA Soccer for the Goldstar)

The Saturn didn't ship with a game at launch, IIRC. Later when it was clear that they were losing to Sony, they started giving Virtua Fighter 2 and some other games away with the system.

Actually, I believe both the Jaguar the 3DO had a free pack-in game at launch, only one controller though. Sega also offered free pack-ins, though their last free launch pack-in was for the MegaDrive/Genesis.

No console released after the SNES had more than one controller, nor has any console after the SNES had a pack-in game at launch. Only one controller is the industry standard nowadays, and giving us a game with the thing is more generous than Sony or Microsoft have ever been. Remember that Sony is charging $600 for their console, which will no doubt only have one controller.

I think the issue isn't entirely enthusiasm, it's also a matter of escalating complexity.

Many old cars can be repaired with vice grips, a hammer and some baling wire, while modern ones typically require half the contents in the 'snap-on' tool van and an ASE certification.

Likewise programming old computers involved a text interface, no inheritance, no library versioning, no com wrappers, no thread synchronization, no event model,. etc. etc.

In both cases the tools have gotten better because the problems people are trying to solve have gotten so much harder. Unfortunately even the best tools can't abstract away the added complexity, so people go from being developers of technology to simply users of technology.

This is true, not only in CS but in other fields too. My father takes pride in being able to disassemble and fix his (rather old) car every time he feels something is wrong - I am capable of checking the oil level and replacing a tyre and pretty much that's it. This thing happens every time a technology matures and market gets saturated - enthusiasts go from majority of users to, say, 5%, and all of a sudden think that 'nobody knows how to do things anymore'.

Instead of sticking a chip in their cartridges to signal 'empty' they use an optical system (this is good), but because they are using such low ink volumes (<2pico-liters IIRC) that using third party ink is likely to smoke your print head. And of course there's always Lexmark, with their patented 4" square print cartridge that holds approximately one thimble-full of ink. Oh, and refilling HP cartridges is a lost cause anyway (even without the chip) since the integrated print head won't last more than a couple of fills before your print quality degrades really badly. So many choices, all of them bad...

Since I got tired of burning through $100 worth of ink every few months I picked up a surplus HP LaserJet 4M+ for all of my non-photo printing. That thing will easily last through the apocolypse, at which point we roam the wasteland ganking people for 5 gallons of high test, so who cares what our prints look like?

Dunno, but I'm a pretty darned big fan of Canon again. At $20 a cartridge for my i960 it's still a bit steep, but at least a black cartridge is still only $20... And the quality is awesome and it works with Linux... I still have a secondary printer for black that I get the cartridge refilled at Wal-Mart.
