    I suspect that there is little optimization done in the world, so each cube gets two tris per (visible) face, even if it's part of a larger polygon.
    So no, I don't think a new graphics card will help that much. (You should play Cube 2: Sauerbraten, anyway.)

    (Quick summary: Some kind of force field is dropped over the town of Chester's Mill, Maine. Lord of the Flies-type microcosm ensues. Good book, I recommend it.)

    The GP is wrong, but you're wrong too.

    The closest analogy I've seen is the lunch counter sit-in, but that's still not quite right, because the people who participated in sit-ins left peacefully when the police escorted them from the premises. The police can't escort you from paypal.com.
    So that's the difference between a sit-in and DDoS.

    I have my DVR set to record SGU, and it actually catches the tail end of the credits for TNG. So they're running TNG before SGU. I guess SOMEONE at Syfy isn't retarded...

    As someone who watched SGU regularly, I can say it wasn't too bad (it was getting better), but it didn't have a theme of its own. Sure, you're on a ship, but you're not trying to get home... You're basically just along for the ride. It's not that interesting. At least be human and try to build on what you've got...

    I miss the planet exploration of the old Stargates. :(

    I just took a look at the Zygote site linked to in a comment above, it it is wicked expensive. $500-$1000 for a model with textures (slight discount for without). If you're just fine with the exterior of the body, Makehuman, despite having a horrible interface and dog-slow rendering, is free and has a damn fine body generator. (I once heard that it also generates a skeleton and musculature, but I didn't see it when I played around.)

    Haven't tried the proprietary driver since they deprecated my X1600 Pro (I switched to the open-source one and didn't look back), so I can't talk about that, but otherwise...
    The OSS driver handles most things pretty well. I don't know if, say Flash video is GPU-accelerated, but it seems to handle most 3d performance pretty well. Video, too, pretty much up to 1080p (but not including it, unfortunately; I don't know how CPU-dependent this is, either).
    The proprietary driver is a bit better in terms of performance, but it doesn't support cool things like KMS and will probably have problems with stranger monitor setups.

    I think I'm getting a new ATI card for Christmas, if that tells you anything. ;) I'm supporting ATI because they support the OSS community with their hardware documentation.

    Guys, Google's not changing their search results. Just words that show up in autocomplete.
    So if, for example, you start typing "call of duty 7 cra", it's not going to offer "crack", but it will offer "crazy", "crap", etc. Anyone looking for a crack is going to take the extra second to type it out and press enter. This isn't actually going to deter anyone.

    They also make it nigh on impossible to find the free version on their site (or it was hard last time I looked, which has been a while).

    free.avg.com. You just have to watch for the free links, because they put the paid ones next to it and they're a whole lot flashier

    Granted, in this case, it's a pretty small potential return, but generally, corporations at least pretending to care about consumers goes a long way.
    For example, would you buy from a retailer known to be a huge douchebag? I didn't think so.
    Now, would you buy from a retailer you know to be awesome? Exactly.

    Problem is, when everyone's working at different hours, communicating/coordinating with them is going to be nigh impossible.
    Especially in retail. The store might not be open during normal business hours, so you look it up... And it's only open when you're usually eating dinner/sleeping. Now what?

    Dunno about the rest of Slashdot, but if I try for a nickname and it's taken, I'll come up with a new one rather than append a number. (Of course, this was back in the '90s, I eventually settled on SheeEttin, and I've never seen it taken anywhere.)
    I guess I did that because I would pride myself on the creativity of a unique nickname, and as such, I guess I also looked down on someone who just appended numbers.

    In any case, when you use leet, you look like this guy.

    I believe the word is in quotes because the word she was looking for was "ignorance", as in "ignorance of the law is no excuse".

    Of course, when The Law is hundreds of pages, generally inaccessible to the public, requires the assistance of a lawyer in reading it, AND is constantly modified in meaning but not writing by case law, it sure as hell should be...
