"Today's big story centers around the killing Of District Attorney McGraw, whose body was Found in his garage, murdered.
Dr. Walker is under the impression that these crimes Were being perpetrated by dead men charged with atom Rays, which gives them superhuman strength and makes Them impervious to bullets.
Slashdot could have been Digg or Reddit before either of those existed. Instead the intentional policy of marginalizing the userbase even as the editors and management stopped caring about the site led to increasingly outdated and irrelevant stories, and users who left and never came back.
The introduction of the "firehose" was just salt in the wound because the peek behind the curtain it gave just confirmed the speculation, that there _were_ actually decent posts already written and ready to go, only to be ignored by the slashdot admins in favor of slashvertisements and week old news.
I still come here, but it is for the same reason drudge is still my homepage. It is a relic of an internet that no longer exists and there is some joy in watching something die that you watched as it was birthed.
I'm imagining that right now Taco is wringing his hands because he no longer has the name recognition he once had, never bothered learning how to write content, didn't keep up with programming in any relevant way, and based on slashdot's stats, doesn't have any real skill in running a large website in the 21st century. I'm not sure what he is going to do. Maybe get an honorary position at a publisher with no real responsibility or turn into the web 1.0 version of c-list former television stars haunting conventions for increasingly pathetic fans.
I don't think piracy is what hurts them, it is the fact that six year old middle of the road PCs running XP are still completely fine to use for almost every task that isn't gaming related.
The move to 64-bit everything will maybe go some way towards restarting the hardware race, but for the most part it seems to be dead, and nobody bothers to upgrade an OS until they get another computer.
But no decent equivalent to NoScript, which is arguably more important for privacy concerns. It is mind-boggling the number of useless third party javascript that exists on most pages.
Even if you just take Google into account, they have their finger in a huge percentage of sites either through hosted javascript libraries (jquery especially), ads, analytics, maps, etc.
I've been using SRWare Iron a lot which is basically chrome with all the Google tentacles removed.
It (and Chrome) are noticeably faster than Firefox and IE, but I still feel weird using it for general purpose browsing because of the lack of NoScript. Until equivalent functionality exists in Chrome I'll probably never switch entirely.
what if you only want the DVR capability, would you necessary spend the extra on the HD-DVD player... dunno about you but I don't plan on going to HD discs for as long as I can (if ever, i don't wanna re-buy my 100+ dvds) Why would you have to rebuy 100 DVDs. Just keep the DVDs you have and buy/rent new content in HD.
So, Slashdot editors, take note! *WE* are the reason we are here. *YOU* are not. Many of us don't even bother to read the articles any more, preferring to soak up the collective wisdom of techies from varying age groups and fields. If you piss us off, and the collective community of Slashdot deteriorates, then there's no reason for me (or others) to keep coming back.
Think about it. They probably would take note if it actually mattered. If you read any of the "inside slashdot" type posts, it is always mentioned that the people that read the comments are a tiny fraction of slashdot's user base, and the people that bother to post are an even tinier fraction of that.
So basically you have a nice point, but it is not in any way based in reality. Only a deluded sense of self-importance made even sillier by being based on the internet.
That must be a very soft hardcore gamer you're thinking of, my definition of hardcore includes the ability to overlook superficialities if the game is good, someone who plays the games to look cool instead of the gameplay is not part of the hard core of gaming. Well that is sort of the problem isn't it? "Hardcore" and "casual" gamers are arbitrarily defined terms created solely to argue on the internet.
Thats true, all in the implementation. It does a much better job of it then Nintendo's true first attempt( Power Glove). So far they've only used it to be a substitute for other devices.
Nintendo didn't have anything to do with the creation or sale of the Power Glove. It was sold by Mattel.
That is some exciting anecdotal evidence you have there, by jove!
I know three people with a Wii. They all have 360's. None of them every play the Wii. Why? Because there are very few third party games that are actually good. Maybe that will change with time. It is too early to say. But there is a lot of shovelware with terrible gameplay AND terrible graphics piling up on the Wii...
I notice this quite a bit, and I never considered that it was intentional. The odd thing is I will lose the ability to create new connections, ping outside IP addresses, or use DNS, but all of my existing connections (SSH, downloads, etc) continue functioning as normal.
I don't ignore them as a credible source, and appreciate the link to their financial report if it is you that posted it, but I didn't see any demographic data supporting their assertation.
It is possible I missed it, or that it exists only in an underground bunker at Nintendo HQ.
Well, I suppose asserting that anyone who likes playing video games is a shut in teenager is just one of many ways a person can act like a douche on the internet while joyously farting in the face of reality, considering that less than 30% of the game playing market is under 18.
If that is what floats your condescending boat down the mighty River Smarmy, you might as well go with it.
Is there any actual evidence that Wii is selling based on "hype" or "being a fad" any of the other lame alternative explanations that, after 11 months of sustained success, are getting silly and stale?
No, which I never claimed was the case...My point was that I haven't seen any concrete evidence one way or the other. Just a lot of what appear to be baseless assertations.
I see this factoid tossed around quite a bit. Is there any actual evidence that it is selling to people who don't normally enjoy video games rather than last-gen console owners who wanted something new to play while they were waiting for the 360 and PS3 to come down in price?
I have a lot of trouble believing that a mediocre game library and a magical remote control are convincing non-gamers to spend several hundred dollars on games, who weren't previously swayed by the hugely broad libraries and discounted prices of the PS2 and Gameboy.
Even a link to a consumer survey would be nice. I'm not saying it isn't true, but saying it doesn't make it true.
I was temporarily hosting a video clip from a British hidden camera type show where you can clearly see Uri bending a spoon with his hands when he thought nobody was looking.
I got a cease and desist letter from his lawyer. It is one of my most cherished possessions.
Similarly sized and priced phones, with comparable features, are already on the market and include full keyboards. Removing the keyboard without reducing the size of the unit is a giant step backwards in usability for something billing itself as a "breakthrough internet device."
Packt Publishing presents: Julian Assange's Drupal Made Easy
This is possibly the most boring story slashdot has ever posted.
The port is already sticking out of the phone case. Put ears on it. Put small screws that attach the ears to the case.
Gosh that was tough.
Stop depending on a dab of solder to support a connector and mount it to the case where it belongs.
This used to be the standard way of doing things.

Who cares.
You neglected to mention that the "contract" was specifically signed in a hurry to give an out for ignoring the election.
I'd say intervening in the affairs of the Axis powers would suffice as "a single case."

It is sort of ridiculous.

Save some parentheses for the rest of us, guy.

It's not that Zonk is a fanboy, it's just that he is a terrible poster with nothing interesting to say.
