Look at the current banking crisis. Bankers, realtors, appraisers, all conspiring to convince some gullible idiot that he or she can afford to not only buy a house 3X their yearly income, but said house would become a magic money machine. The ARM mortgage would be no problem because the laws of conservation no longer existed, and the double digit growth in value would continue forever, and the house could be sold at a profit at any point. Then there were the gullible idiots who bought the magical risk free packaged investments based on the magical mortgages. These magical financial instruments were another guaranteed trove of never ending money generation. Of course, like spammers, the only people who made money were the criminals, and, like spammers, should be in jail. The flaw in your logic is easy money is that only thing that makes people stupid faster than easy sex. Tell people that a magic fairy will give them money, and most will believe it. That is why our presidential candidates primary sources of income, alcohol and gambling, are so lucrative.

A few years ago I got back in touch with an old friend from high school. He was selling mortgages. Needless to say, he was quite gullible. I even tried to point out to him that selling lots and lots and lots of mortgages without really caring if they could be paid back was somewhat odd. He was so gullible that he couldn't concieve of the damage that he was helping do to our economy.

Needless to say; salesmen selling scams are often decieved into believing that the scam is a good deal.

It isn't hard to beat analogue TV, but most people ditched analogue TV many years ago

I Subscribe to Comcast in San Francisco, and recently subscribed in Silicon Valley. In both areas, Comcast's uplink to Comedy Central and FX is analog; even though they transmit digital. The snow plays games with MPEG's compression; and they also comress (aka loudness wars) the sound.

The difference is noticable when the high-def channels carry standard TV. For example, all of the broadcast stations have two channels. (FOX is 02 for SD, and 702 for HD.) When FOX shows the Simpsons, which is SD; 703 is MUCH better then 03, because 03's uplink is analog.

Another example can be seen by comparing the DVD of The Shield to Comcast. Again, Comcast delivers a horrible picture and distorted sound. It's because their uplink is analog.

The fact is, however, that governments are entirely capable of performing MITM attacks, as can telecommunications companies; and if it becomes popular we may see more techniques that allow individuals to perform MITM attacks. While this algorithm has significant merit, care needs to be taken to avoid a false sense of security.

There is a commercial need for encrypted HTTP that doesn't need SSL's complicated certificate system. For example, when using SOAP on a LAN, encryption is a requirement to deter casual sniffing of passwords. The MITM issue just simply isn't a risk that justifies certificates.

I disagree. There were significant changes in the 60's that you aren't getting. First, airline travel was more widespread in the 60's. Second, there were people having unprotected sex with dozens or hundreds of partners. Sure that was going on in the 50's, but by the 70's there was a lot more possibilities for HIV infection to propagate. Finally, heroin use grew dramatically as the Vietnam War dragged on, providing a more reliable means for HIV infection via used needles.

Consider this: In Africa, in the out-of-the-way villages, people will often have 7-8 children. In such an isolated village, the entire village could live with a less deadly version of AIDS for many generations and evolve a tolerance. In theory, a village could live for many generations with a small percentage resilant enough to reproduce.

Thus, I think AIDS has been mutating in some out-of-the-way African villages for many generations without anyone knowing about it.

Why not include a 24-bit 192 or 96 khz lossless format, and maybe something in 5.1 instead? DVD-Audio and SACD didn't take off because no one adopted the players, but it might take off if you made it easily playable. I might even pay a slight premium.

I own a lot of DVD-As and SACDs. All of them are excellent, and worth every penny... BUT:

Concert DVDs in 5.1 and DVDs with music videos trampled DVD-A and SACD in the marketplace. Frankly, now that I've purchased a fancy TV, if I'm going to go through the effort to listen to something in 5.1; I want to see a video of something as well. For example, when BT released "This Binary Universe", he released it with a DVD that contained the entire album in 5.1 DTS with increadible animations.

For all intents and purposes, DTS's highest bitrate is just as good as lossless. (Look up "noise shaping" and you'll understand why). This means that a concert DVD-V with 48khz or 96khz DTS is audiophile-grade; and much more likely to succeed in the marketplace when compared with the same concert without the video.

So... Even though I LOOOOOOOVE my DVD-A and SACDs; I find that the format is really only good for remasters of older recordings that didn't have video. Furthermore, the format is kind of useless because DVD-A supports the same audio quality with 96khz DTS.

The other thing with 5.1 is that it's really only a living room format. It doesn't work well with headphones, it's difficult in a car, and it requires a bit of obsessivness on the side of the consumer. For that reason, it's difficult to sell in an audio-only version; because most people want some kind of a video in their living room.
