Agreed. At first when I read the title I was thinking Asian languages. But what in the world is this doing on slashdot? A dozen keyboards on a table all hooked up to a laptop, and all to print variations of:) and:(...
Maybe 3 years ago I played along with such a caller. I run Ubuntu, but didn't say anything to them about what o/s I was using. When he asked me to visit a web site and download a Windows file from a web page, I laughed inside, thinking nothing would happen. I downloaded the.exe from a throw-away Ubuntu VM I had. Unexpectedly, Ubuntu downloaded Wine, installed it, then ran the.exe file. I was both impressed and scared that Ubuntu had done this automatically to run the.exe file. This resulted in a completely empty Windows (Wine) desktop, to which they of course quickly tried to connect. I kept "accidentally" disabling their control, so they could only look. When I finally gave them access, they were very confused that it had none of the usual Windows applications and menus they were expecting to see, nor did their usual password changing and locking work. More and more people on their end of the call were talking on the phone, trying to figure out what was going on.
After nearly an hour on the phone, I had enough and told them I was a software developer, and they hadn't scammed me. They swore at me and hung up. Immediately, I got a phone call from someone else saying he was calling to help me unlock my computer for a fee. Obviously as soon as they lock a desktop, they must trigger something in their call system so someone else calls back to earn some money.
Take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... . My spouse is American, though we're lived in Canada for 16 years and are raising our kids here. The new tax implications are a serious issue. I know 1 person who has renounced their U.S. citizenship due to the new tax implications, and I'd love for my spouse to do the same to simplify our tax situation and prevent the U.S. from making a grab at our Canadian retirement savings.
Personally, I'm not hurrying to register our children with the U.S. to secure U.S. citizenship.

I would hate to see the SNMP MIB for a networked toilet. Sure, a commercial place (think airport, or large shopping mall) could use it to keep a handle on which bathroom needs to be cleaned, but... Some variables are not meant to be polled. I don't want my SNMP software to tell me the size or texture of objects flushed, etc.
Seems exciting, but knowing a little bit about hardware, and even more about software, I think the milestones are a bit ambitious.
Don't get me wrong, it is a really neat idea and covered to various degrees in many sci-fi books and movies. Geeks, rejoice!
But transplanting a human brain by 2020-2025? And a full upload of a human brain including personality by 2030-2035?
What I think is more likely to happen first, and which opens up an enormous Pandora's box of medical/moral/ethical issues, is transplanting a live human brain into a younger or more capable human body. Add to that "body harvesting", and what happens when someone is transplanted into the body of the opposite sex! Obviously, there is a lot of potential for future jobs researching how all of this will be accomplished. If it happens within our lifetime, then....nearly everything will happen within our lifetime. (For those who can afford to have it done.)
What I find more interesting (and perhaps there's already a perfectly good explanation known for this) is why women generally live so much longer than men?
If you need to ask, then obviously you've never been married.
I'm a software developer working remotely from home for many years now. About a year ago, between 2 and 4pm, I received several "congratulations" by e-mail. I was confused. Turns out they had a special lunch meeting in the board room where I was awarded a prize for some work I'd completed earlier in the year. Problem is, no-one remembered to invite me to the meeting, and while several people were on the conference line, no-one thought to ask if I was on the line.
I'd still rather work from home versus commuting to a cube farm, but note it does present some challenges since people can easily forget to include you in meetings, decisions, conversations, etc.
So this means if a planet orbits a sun in any other plane than the one that happens to line up directly with us, it wont spot anything? Wouldn't that be...most of space?
More specifically, the PUEL edition of VirtualBox directly from the VirtualBox web site. Don't bother with the version available through the app repository. VirtualBox is great at releasing bug fixes every 1 or 2 months, the PUEL edition will give you all the extra bits like USB and 2D/3D acceleration. I left the various VMWare products behind many years ago and migrated to VirtualBox both at home and at work, and today I still think I made the right decision.
See XTP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xpress_Transport_Protocol
Devices that use XTP to help transfer files over satellite links exist. For example: Mentat/Packeteer/Blucoat's SkyX product.
(Disclaimer: I used to work for Packeteer, though not on the SkyX product.)

Avatar quote that comes to mind: "You throw a stick in the air around here it falls on some sacred fern, for Christ's sake!"

If you're using linux or BSD, another option to reverse ssh tunnels or openvpn would be EPS Conduits: http://eps-conduits.sourceforg...
It was written with the goal of having a large number of remote devices form a virtual network for ease of management/maintenance.
That is why keyboards have CTRL+F. (Top of page 107.)

Can someone please explain what "mouth/stomach separation" means?
You're thinking of the Disney model: "Play it now, buy it now -- quick! -- before it goes back in the vault for 10 more years!"
Score:5 Insightful works too, but personally, I would have rated this funny...!

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
I expected the conversations to quickly turn to Hans Reiser...but...nothing? (Queue killerfs jokes, etc.)

but we all know that linux users can't stay away from the command line...
I must admit, I fall into this camp. I'm constantly running gdm from the command-line.
