No, I didn't. I have lifetime upgrades but only for a limited number of activations. I had a computer go tits up on me and it was a hassle to get the license switched over. They haven't really screwed me. I just lost interest in continuing with them.
I agree. I was a long time user of UltraEdit and later UEStudio. I liked their products and purchased lifetime upgrades for both home use and work. When I purchased, they gave me a serial number that they seemed to change a lot. This was presumably a futile effort to shake the pirates. Nonetheless, I could put it on all my machines and I was happy. Then they hired some guy who was going to turn them into a real software company and he put limits on how many activations you could have per license. I think that number is two activations. I just decided their editor wasn't worth the effort and went to an open source alternative. Here is a specific case where their desire to prevent piracy (which it didn't - you can easily find cracked copies) cost them a paying customer. You rock IDM - not.
As to the original question, I think a serial number is fine. Much more than that and you risk pissing off your paying customers.
Anyway, he's a tech writer, so I assume it would be easier for him to call up Adobe and say, "Hey, I'm working on this hilarious project, do you happen to have..."
More likely what happened is he called up Adobe and said "Hey, I'm looking for a copy of your software that isn't riddled with security holes" and that is what they came up with.
But if he were to go on a diet, he would be getting smaller would he not? Therefore, the effective rate of growth would be even greater!!! He should eat like there is no tomorrow in order to outpace the rate of growth. However, that would likely lead to an early death and so the time gains would be nil.
Control Panel->Appearance and Personalization->Personalization->Window Color and Appearance->Advanced appearance settings.. -> Border Padding
Default was 5 on my machine
"Paper products maker Kimberly-Clark drove the morale of its IT infrastructure group into the ground after massive firings and outsourcing."
They rewarded failure by doing this in the first place.
I was given a very nice Compaq Deskpro series computer with about a 1.5G P4 (this was a while ago!)
Is the reference to time based on the fact that it was a 1.5G P4, or that it was a very nice Compaq? For the later, it must have been a very long time ago indeed!
> "they dropped that stuff like a bad habit"
The didn't drop the test equipment line, they split HP into 2 companies, HP and Agilent.
Agilent is still making fine test equipment.
http://www.agilent.com/
Too bad they didn't split off the computer and printer business into "Agilent" and let the test equipment keep the HP name.

I bet you didn't know you needed a $1149 power cable to make your music sound better? The "how-it-works" section explains why you do (Noise always works from top down). This same guy has a lot of other products you should look at if you need a good laugh. The "blackbody field conditioner" is my personal favorite.
No shit! They could hire at least 4 dudes for that $44K!!

Seriously. Don't.

They will never make something with a form factor that can be mistaken for an iPad.
Now that the form factor of a rectangle is taken, they could always make a tablet in the shape of an "L".

Couple got caught in the airport's bathroom on a blowjob.
Former Senator Larry Craig?
"Yer teh fuct"
If you upgrade now, Steve Ballmer will throw in a chair with your purchase!
This is slashdot. There won't be hot singles ads flashing up on the folks that hang out here. There will be ads for "Fleshlight" popping up.
Or he is talking about the upper 35% of the G20.
There's an option in Windows to adjust the border width (it defaults to 4 but can be lowered all the way to 0).
Appearance -> Window Color -> Advanced appearance settings.. -> Border padding

Plenty of 11 year olds got their start coding a mix of BASIC and 6502 assembly. C shouldn't be much worse.
Isn't that how Bill Gates got started? Look what that got us.

I wonder if they plan use this to charge people for skipping Windows 8?
All major public accounting firms have 60hour minimum work-weeks for Jan-April ("busy season") every year....
So what are you doing fucking off reading Slashdot for?
These are the same people who dumped the United States as HQ for Dubai...

Hopefully this law...
Yep. This sounds like legislation from the bench to me.

I wish somebody would take FF 3.6 and create a fork. The FF developers have lost their marbles.
He should be summarily executed as an example and to prevent such foolishness in the future. We don't need him polluting our gene pool.
Agreed. But as to giving lawyers a bad name, no he doesn't. Lawyers already have a more than bad name. IANAL, thank god!
You fools are only benchmarking Firefox 8!! Well I benchmarked Firefox 14
Boy, are you behind. I just downloaded Firefox 17 and it blows Firefox 15 out of the water!
They would be separate for about an hour. Right away, somebody would figure out a way to connect them together thus defeating the purpose.
