  1. Re:Plagiarist? on One Hundred Years of E=MC2 · · Score: 2, Insightful

Even if it was plagiarism, the mere article itself made a much greater effect on the scientific community than did the other previous researchers. Sometimes it's not who thought of it but who pushed their point or got lucky who gets famous - that's just a fact of scientific research.

  2. Re:You don't get it do you? on Apple Releases Multi-Button "Mighty Mouse" · · Score: 1

"The reason is quite simple: it is for programmers to make their applications in such a way that you can access ANY features using a single mouse button."

But that's not true. I find it more confusing because often times menus are hidden behind a combination of keyboard buttons that bring up mouse selection screens.

  3. Hmm... on Google Maps Creator Takes Browsers To The Limit · · Score: 3, Interesting

I don't know if I like the idea of taking browsers to the limit when it comes to advertising and pop-ups.

  4. Re:Why? on Windows Vista & IE7 Beta 1 Released · · Score: 1

Very simple. You will eventually have to upgrade if you want to keep using new software and services to their full extent.

As new versions of Windows are released, rarely will a software company go out of their way to fully support older versions, especially new startups. If I were still running Windows 98 I'd be cut off from quite a few of my favorite programs.

This is not to say you can't keep using Windows XP - but there was a reason I eventually had to upgrade. It just gets to be too much of a hassle to deal with gradually diminishing support and software.

  5. Told You So on Challenging Music Downloading Myths · · Score: 1

This has long been something I've been saying.

Before I started downloading music illegally, I never bought any CDs. Now that I do, I use illegal downloading to find bands that I really enjoy then buy their CDs. Overall, the music industry has made a profit from my purchases - if it weren't for music downloading I wouldn't have bought a thing.

  6. Question on Learning Perl, 4th Ed. · · Score: 4, Interesting

I've got a question. I haven't read through it yet, but I've got a borrowed copy of 4th edition. Should I bother to read through it, or should I hold out for finding a 5th ed?

  7. Re:Emulation, not innovation on USA to Pass Science Crown to China · · Score: 1

That may be true, but that's because China has had to catch up with the rest of the world in the last few decades. The chinese revolution and the cultural revolution left a tattered nation; while China has experienced amazing economic growth in the last year, it's mostly just to get caught up.

So, if there were any time that China would become successful innovators, I'd say now is a good time.

Surprisingly, the 15% of their time unnaccounted for was only on the weekends when they did things unrelated to their profession.

  10. Re:Or... on Beginning Of the End For PC Noise · · Score: 1

They're certainly quieter than desktops. Two years ago I got a Sager, one of the desktop replacement laptops. It's got gigantic fans (for a laptop) that run almost constantly, and it's still more quiet than any desktop I've used.

  11. Or... on Beginning Of the End For PC Noise · · Score: 1

    Get a laptop.

All the ones that aren't super-powered are pretty much super-silent (except in the rare case that the fan actually turns on).

  12. Highest Ranking Name on Rate Your IM Popularity · · Score: 1

Does anyone know who the highest scoring names are? My friends and I attempted yesterday to find what names might be high up on the list - the highest we could find was "your mom", which was closely followed by "jesus" (which, incidentally, totally beat "god").

  13. Big Whoop on Hot Coffee Cooling Off · · Score: 1

Maddox has posted what I've been saying for a while - the change from Mature to AO means nothing for this particular game.

What it means in the future is yet to be seen. But, those 17 year-olds who wanted to get the game now are screwed - they'll just have to wait until either Rockstar releases a censored version (that still has all the looting, drugs and violence), or their parents buy them the game (like parents ever do that!)

  14. Get Them In The Air on Space Shuttle Discovery to Launch July 26 · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm afraid that NASA shuttles will never get in the air again, due to the now incredibly high standards of NASA. The last problem may have been pretty big, but we can't turn off every shuttle launch just because it's not absolutely perfect.

Believe me, I want the astronauts to survive. But you also have to understand that going into space is dangerous. Things go wrong even in the most tested of scenarios. The astronauts know the risk.
