I bought some RAM a few years back for pretty cheap. I check an advertisement for Fry's themselves and I saw that a week later it was even cheaper. I was heading there anyway, so I took my old receipt and they discounted the difference off my new purchase. Their policy only lasts 30 days, but its pretty nice. (Those of you who know Fry's also know that whenever you get something, you almost always have to come back within 30 days... kinda makes me nervous to think a store will only deduct 3 bucks from your refund if you bring it back without a box...) Either way its an awesome store, with a huge selection and relatively good customer service... Now if only we could get them here in Europe...
Anyone else getting the nintendo revolution vibe? In my mind, the "Here I Am, Hack Me" concept behind both these products is something that if a proper community developed, would definately motivate me to try it out.
I like the "make install" kernel command. It creates two files vmlinuz and vmlinuz-2.6.13-gentoo-r3 (or whatever patchset you use). it renames the previous vmlinuz to vmlinuz.old and any previous vmlinuz-2.6.13-gentoo-r3 to vmlinuz-2.6.13-gentoo-r3.old.
It makes a grub config really simple. You set one command to vmlinuz and another to vmlinuz.old so you always have your previous kernel in case the new one locks up.

OpenOffice Bloated?

In this age where the average new computer is in the 2.6 ghz range (im talking budget as well) and RAM is at a minimum 256MB (but is usually around 512), What is the average person gonna use all that power for? Email doesn't take much. Playing Freecell doesn't either. If I were to go to a normal office building, and see the average load, I'm guessing it would not be very high.
Now... As Computers get faster, and an Office Suite begins to provide more features than the average user even would think about using, what is the drawback to OpenOffice? yes, I know ooCalc2 sucks when it comes to scientific graphs and stuff. But does the average user ever do that? No!
I personally believe that for the general population, Processor speed and updated software is reaching a plateau. I mean, what else do you want in a word processor? Combine this with a massive amount of spare CPU cycles, and people are going to see that shelling out a couple hundred bucks for features that they won't use is ridiculous, and a reason against it definately will not be that they are concerned with their RAM having a quarter dedicated to their office suite. It does what it needs to do, and it does that for free. That's all that will matter.
Didnt Gmail start in the labs like everything else? Aren't the labs just the one day a week required tinkering that google employees have to work on? (sounds harsh i know)
I get the feeling that the ads were added in after the conceptualization, and that hes being honest when he says he wanted to create a better email.

I think the perfect media for portability like this has to be "The Family Guy"... or other TV comedy series...
So what if the picture is small and not so perfect... A comedy series is all about whats said anyway. I've laughed just as hard at some crappy 32 MB episode with 320x240 resolution and bitrate worth next to nothing as a high quality dvd rip.
id watch it when taking trains and public transport (except at night... as that just screams out "MUG ME")

Either way, iPodLinux is now able to not only watch movies on an iPod, but now you can play Doom! (due to a lack of buttons, you apparently arent able to change weapons....)
So save a few bucks. Install iPodLinux to watch movies on that iPod photo you already have (dunno if its out for nano yet)
anyone know what the bandwidth is like?
is it limited?
beacuse providing a free alternative to dial-up would do many things...
1) AOL dies... people can do everything dial-up aol would do for free with google (Actual more)
2) more people are online... lest say this adds a million UserHours (nice made-up unit...its like a kWh... 1 UserHour is a person speding one hour online) thats a couple hundred thousand UserHours directed to google... more people on google is more business...
3) somehow make the world dislike google even when they haven't strayed at all from their "Do no evil" plan...(It'll happen someday...)
obviously? what's so obvious about it? Loosen up... its just an amusing stereotype. Just an assumption. I'm guessing you picture me as some high-school punk in a little town in the states who has never travelled more than 50 miles from his hometown... (something like that?)
well in reality i currently live in Brussels, and I actually do know something
Either way, lighten up... If I had a dollar for every time someone made some comment against Bush or the US about something which they know nothing about, I'd be all over slashdot by now as the next IT tycoon...
Once more... Lighten up
All I know is that i recompile my kernel nearly daily... (Summertime, no school, why not try and break my gentoo system.) And in all reality the simple fact that i can run "make install" and be done with it all. dont need to worry about risking the MBR.
Anybody ever considered the comparisions between the internet and nearly all media technology?
Look at TV. Public television. Free. Cable/Satellite TV. Costs a bit, but often a thousand times better (sad that thats a literal value.) Even radio is like that now with Satelite Radio. Perhaps Google will release a low bandwidth wifi. Google has a certain dominant market share for search engines. Realistically, the more people on the internet, the more money for google. A near nationwide low bandwidth free network would allow anyone with a computer to easily have 24 hr access to the internet. Dial-up internet is dying out pretty fast, and those that do dial-up are only online for a limited amount of time (assuming they only have one line.) A free service would allow them to be online 24 hrs, and that would result in more overall use of google = more money.
but mainly my reason for liking google over microsoft is the ease of doing what you want with its services, rather than what they want you to do.
compare gmail and hotmail... 2 inter-OS services..
Hotmail = no pop3 access, no outlook access unless you've used it for a few years already, no forwarding, annoying and slow web interface, no contacts export, no contacts import, and up until gmail very little amount of webspace (increased to 100MB after gmail), doesnt automatically save outgoing mail.
Gmail = pop3 acces, email forwarding, best webmail interface ive used (i love the conversation feature), 2.5 GB web space (and counting), easy contacts export/import plus guides on how to screen scrape from all the competitors, filters (way more manageable than folders, able to apply multiple filters), automatically saves outgoing mail.
just to name a few....
but when it comes down to it, does anybody flame yahoo about their services? no... because even there it is much easier to make yahoo mail do what you want than hotmail.
Hotmail is for the people who just discovered that AOL was a waste of time...
Have you ever done your time "picking up pony doo"? Have you ever had to do a bit of manual labor in your life? I'm doubtful. Theres nothing wrong with a bit of hard work.
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day... teach a man to fish... he eats for a lifetime.
Likewise... raise taxes and give massive unemployment benefits... sure... it helps the poor... but wheres the progress?
America is a land of work. we get made fun of because we work too much. Likewise, we make fun of europe because they are lazy and dont work enough.
a good friend of mine here in Belgium (yeah.. im expat) has had it with socialism.... one of his employees is currenty "sick"... under Belgian law, a worker is entitled to 14 days paid sick leave. This worker is out 14 days... comes back for the 15th day, and then takes another 14 days leave...
can anyone tell me how a situation like that under socialism benefits society?
My personal belief is that rather than just providing for the poor, we should fight for their righhts and abiity to work and provide for themselves.
and as far as religious groups helping the poor, I know my church donates a considerable ammount to foriegn aid. (The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter Day Saints) one such "Teach a Man to Fish" is the Perpetual Education Fund: a fund established through donations which allows adults in third world countries to take out low interest loans in order to pursue an education.
Overall, for me I feel that through my church I can contirbute more to help the world than a socialist government would.
you know what?
I fully respect anyone who has the courage to beleive in something, doenst matter what, instead of concentrating so much effort trying to bring others down...
putting religious duties aside.... maybe you should take a step back and look as whats going on...
on the one side.... the religious people are trying to (according to what they beleive) bring you up and bring happiness into your lives (whether you find them successful or not is irrelevant at the moment)... on the other side... you anti-religious people work so hard to tear us down in our beliefs...
what ever happened to good intentions and common coutesey... even something as simple as manners....
if you dont agree with the religious ideas... you can just ignore them... its not that hard... but dont attack them... dont waste energy dragging people down... its just not polite....
hehe... not too bad of an idea... do me a favor... come down here.. and explain to the belgian governemnt that being 17 years old it is a necessity to be able to drive a car... or tell them to expand the public transportation to a point where i can go study with my friend who lives across town without having to spent an hour each way on public transportation... cuz without either of those 2 being done... chance of us getting together and studying are limited to school hours... which we take full advantage of....
You know... i think you are right... being a 17 teen year old... i really should try and approach my social life in a professional manner... i should hire a secretary as well to keep my schedule intact... and when im trying to cram for my next calculus test... and im having some trouble with a problem... i should send my friend, who at that same moment is cramming for the same test and is most likely doing the same problem, an email so that when he is done cramming (which chances are would be after the test...) he can take his time to answer my email... because its so much more professional...
