  1. Re:sell who on what? on Gut-Check Time For Windows 8, Microsoft · · Score: 1

these events are where they explain why they will pay vendors to not ship competing products and what they are supposed to sell in their stead. Recall how ASUS went from a Linux champion to a Windows chump in the netbook space and it was all after signing a deal with Microsoft.

What's keeping this interesting isn't how they can "talk" vendors into eliminating Linux systems and bumping the hardware and retail prices upward while still getting profits from Microsoft marketing kick-backs. No, it's keeping interesting because that once little Apple company will still keep them up at night with better products. But it sure would be nice to have just one big Linux champion around.

former Yahoo CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang fought to keep Yahoo out of Microsoft's hands but Carl Icahn was too powerful. Although it took three years, he's now won and did what he said he would do in 2008. Oh well, another one bits the dust.

There seems to be a pattern here. Products and industries where there are many competitors quickly drop to only 2 or 3 competitors when Microsoft comes in and drops billions into their money losing products to "enter" the market. Companies who made enough profits to stay in the market can no longer stay profitable when Microsoft comes in and finances their entry year after year after year with profits from Windows.

So long Yahoo, it really was nice knowing you.

Given that public information, how is the Raspberry Pi even close to comparable to the OLPC XO besides a very low price and they are both computing devices? And I forgot to mention the built in mesh networking and super low battery power usage so it could run all day on either batteries or very intermittent power.

there was this little company called IBM which gave Microsoft their position and brand recognition and when the impossible happened( as far as IBM was concerned ) and the IBM PC BIOS was cloned and IBM PC clones hit the market, Microsoft's position with IBM made Microsoft the obvious OS choice for the clones. So Microsoft never had to build their brand and never had to build their market or market position. How they used their position to shut down both ISVs and OS competitors using their position in the market is legendary.

So Bill Gates would be nowhere near where he is now had he not ridden on the coat tail of IBM and if you look at all the failures in the markets where they could not leverage their position with the Windows OS you should see Bill Gates is nothing near Thomas Edison, Henry Ford or yes, even Steve Jobs.
