Most people don't really care about being free. They'd rather be safe and feel secure even if it's only an illusion.
Its not true in the slightest; everybody want freedom and privacy, admittedly most do not realise either how much they have given up, or have not noticed it being taken away...and have not sacrificed these things anything as astute as security [that does not make sense anyway ] they have done it for old fashioned *convenience*.
It only the massive marketing campaign by Apple/Microsoft that they fuck you over for your own good. Its not good you being fucked. I find it offensive that you repeat there insane propaganda.
This is the link to the interview http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424127887323717004578159481472653460-lMyQjAxMTAyMDAwNDEwNDQyWj.html or maybe it only shows a summery depending who you are. I personally interpreted the article completely different; My summery would have been "Irrelevant Microsoft", but it touches on issues such as the antitrust case; owing a phone hardware company while expecting others to use your OS; The issue of Goggles relationship with Apple [Where WSJ got its title] all worthwhile topics of discussion, but as I said the thing I derived from it was Microsoft not being part of the "Gang of Four", and its products not even worth commenting on.
Yes, their market share has gone down because the market has expanded with tons of shitty Android phones flooding the market not because they are selling less phones and tablets.
LOL and that is the point. Android had great phones at every price range...apple have only one phone, and its poor value..and its killing them. You need to recheck your links [those that aren't behind paywalls] I don't think you read them they include quotes like "now held over 12 percent of the Chinese smartphone market." and "It also claimed that the Ascend P1 and Ascend D1 had become best selling handsets in China, Western Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada"...a market Apple is being outsold 21:1 by Android. Calling these phones cheap, is a mistake they are great phones, and the words you're looking for is "good value"
As I said these Android phones are very profitable for those companies. If you can find evidence to the contrary I would love to see it:). Like I say even HTC are still making profits from Android, even with the Windows handycap.
Google makes more from iOS than they do from Android. and Apple basically just prints money
I bet you can't show me current figures to support your claim. Ignoring the indirect benefits of not having another vendor dominate the smart-phone market, when you want make money from advertising on mobile, or the intangible benefits it brings like heavily promoting its brands Google; Chrome; Android; Nexus; Gmail; Play; Wallet; Google+ etc. I suspect the direct benefit from taking a cut from every sale on play as it continues to be launched; inproved; expanded.
As for Apple printing money...absolutely, but as the tablet; phone market continue to mature its pursuit of profit over marketshare. Is looking increasingly shaky, but hey they learnt last time they did this right....
the fact of the matter is that for every vendor making money off of Android at least a dozen have come and failed.
Show me these facts. The irony in reference to this post is Asus and Sony are now profitable since they dropped Windows. Samsung I believe is making out like gangbusters. Lenovo; ZTE; Huawei doing great. Stop spreading this ill informed garbage.
...oh you mean HTC which is STILL profitable, and makes...you guessed it windows phones.
Oh your making a point about your beloved Apple making lots of profits...I'm afraid Apples pursuit of profits is already hurting Apples market share, which didn't work out well last time...they became Microsofts Bitch. They are already irrelevant.
Apple had had billions wiped off its value; Its market share is declining; The launch quarter figures for its most profitable product the iphone, and its new product the iPad is already being overtaken by Android...again. There last product launch the mini, was disappointing.
...but this is all off topic. Apple has different problems..and is a long way from being in any immediate trouble. Unlike Nokia which Microsoft have destroyed in months.
There is still a big feature phone market out there.
Elop destroyed it by saying they were crap. In fact the OS set to replace symbian on these featurephones, the linux based "Meltemi" was cancelled make of that what you will. Samsung [featurephones]...and well "Value Android" are replacing these. I think you will be astonished at how powerful these value androids are...Check out the Huawei Ascend G330 look at the specs http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_ascend_g330-4966.php.
Seen how much money Microsoft is making out of Android?
What money!? There is loads of nominal amounts listed around the internet, Thinks hinted at of what has happened behind closed doors. We know a lot of deals have been struck we just can only speculate at what they are. The reality is I suspect very little actual money has changed hands.
Its not bias of slashdot!? that has made Microsoft Windows Phone and that Nokia Strategy as popular Marmite covered spiders. Nokia twinning themselves *exclusively* with an OS that late; with less features and incompatible with its predecessors, with no viable upgrade path, with proprietary software...on hardware made in china; with less features than its predecessors or the competition at the cost to real peoples jobs, its market value, revenues; market share; brand value....only for it being replace with the latest suitor HTC [with the pattern repeated as Microsoft become their own OEM]. Has become a patent troll with Microsoft...while devaluing those patents to anyone who would have bought them.
I'm just barely touching the surface of what is perhaps a decline of company on an unrepresented scale. I find it insulting to an nth degree that anyone would try to pass anything, anyone saying anything against this is, as emotional, although I suspect the thousands of newly unemployed probably aren't loving them right now.
Maybe the sock-puppets and astro-turfers - and the shills on BOTH sides of the Win/Lin divide - modded you down 'cause you're obviously not among the faithful.
Oh maybe he was modded down because its an overrated comment; much like your own. The comment is based on two statements that is if Microsoft Vanish...suddenly nobody will able to get work done, because that software is not available on other platforms. OMG! Well its just nonsense. All Applications that have any use exist on all platforms; existing code can be made to be cross-platform [designed for single platform just makes it more painful]; The void on iOS and Android had been filled in a few years each sporting 700,000 Applications. Arguing that inertia is good is a little sad.
The Second reason is even more Bizarre having Microsoft around will give Apple or Google competition. Ignoring the fact that Microsoft never compete by creating a better product, they bully;bribe;outlast the competition on the backs of its monopoly and its biiiillliooons. Ironically the very same reason why they have been so ineffective against either Apple or Google, because those same methods don't work against they are simply too large. The greatest insanity of this argument is it is presented in the same topic where Microsoft can extract more cash from its helpless customers, because its a Abusive Monopoly.
...but as for you with the usual "I'm not a fan of MS, but"(sic) why not add "Long time X User, but" or "I've been using X for years, but..." rather than calling people who don't promote your agenda with insults *generic unpopular group* with *sudo religious*;*emotional reasoning*, actually put together a creative argument that either supports or refutes the statement.
Absolutely but wasn't nothing they had 100,000 subscribers. The maths is surprisingly simple Revenue - COS = Gross Profit. The reality is they didn't make a Profit, the bottom line is they would have made less of a loss.:).
I'm sorry if you think your point excludes all others...It doesn't. Ironically having looked at the figures, I think your point is not as strong as you think it is.
Two rules - eight words. 1. Your user experience matters. 2. Create relevant quality content.
If you obey those two rules you can and will do well online. Look at the Wall Street Journal, they charge for a lot of their content and still make money, why? The user experience isn't user hostile and the experience of using their web site is fairly pleasant.
No people pay for the Wall Street Journal over the daily because of the *unique* content it offers. You can get news about Britney/Bieber lovechild [High School Gossip] anywhere; Wall street journal is about money and investing. "Pretty and Experience" bullshit is part of the reason it failed.
So you're saying Android users like apps that emulate crippled web sites with intrusive advertising? That seems odd.
No AC is stating that iExclusivity when Apples market share has been shrinking, is stupid; by supporting Platforms other than Apple it could have supported twice the readership, at very extra cost. Its hard to imagine that kind of exclusivity happening today when we are seeing more job hirings for Android over iOS.
Samsung is kind of hard to compete with nowadays, they're like the Microsoft of the 90s
Samsung is nothing like Microsoft...In fact Microsoft is still Microsoft only in the phone world its FUD; Bully Tactics; Burning Partners have got it treated like a clown that gives you cancer by both carriers and customers
The sad thing in this market anyway they are closet to...what Nokia was and could have been, several fledging operating systems including the successer to Meego [Tizen]; its own [Bada] and even Windows...its just the Market wants Android.
If I was arguing beyond Phones I may even say Sony...but Microsoft never.
I don't want cheap. I want good value. I don't but cheap at any price! A quick look through the games I would argue that they are not what I would call cheap or particularly good value. They are great games...but the prices need to drop before this thinly veiled advertising has some credence.
Linux is a failure on the desktop, but found a niche as Android
If by niche you mean outselling Microsoft Windows...then yes although by machine you mean dominant computer environment. Personally I'm waiting for Year of Windows Mobile.
The reality is Apple is *again* the niche product, with its continued pursuit of profits over market share.
Its off topic, but unlike windows mobile which continues to fail due to its small market share, Linux flourishes I spite of it, and continues to grow. I'd call that a successful platform.
I wish android was in a position to contest the ipad, but with fragmentation getting worse and worse android is just going to get left in the dust.
Thank goodness your dream is todays reality. iPads market share has dropped again sown in one quarter from 60% to 50% in just one quarter. With great launches like the Nexus this is set to continue.
The irony of you quoting fragmentation in a topic where a tablet has the unique feature [what you call fragmentaion] of being open...A feature Apple products lack.
why does an itunes story have a "drm" logo when itunes was the first webstore to sell drm free music?
Personally I dislike the AAC tracks which are incompatible with everything, which is the trouble with patent encumbered formats [No MP3 has nothing like the same problems]. I also find it kind of sad that those who bought those DRM (128-bit) laden tracks are not getting those tracks either upgraded to a higher quality version...or having the DRM removed. I think there are better stores today elsewhere, Amazon offers DRM free 256kb tracks....of course this does not say a lot about all the over content offered in iTunes which is still heavily DRM.
GOG had an opportunity to support Linux, and failed to do so even when every other store has done so. The only irony here is GOG due to its size is more vulnerable than its better know competitors [Desura; Steam] and a whole host of smaller ones , even though by the nature of its store it has suitable software already available as source ports or sells them with DOSBox anyway.
I'll personally not feel any sympathy when Microsoft kill then off. Although I'm sure those that bought from them will be able to derive some comfort from getting the games DRM free...While the option was available.
No free professional help in every major city in the world
Your seriously arguing that there is no help for Linux...or that Apple support is free [hint: its not stupid], and they also break the laws in the EU/China for offering less support than is mandatory. http://www.ubuntu.com/support Personally though if you really need greater support pay for it its $105...but the vast majority don't.
Seriously you are really going to make this a which is what is a free licence, I personally didn't think it was worth pointing out the differences. Lets be honest I don't care about your license snobbery, but the pragmatist in me would argue strongly that the Linux kernel has a happier ecosystem than the BSD one, and the reason is GPL...in the "tit for tat" Linus version not the "Free" Dick verison.
I cannot think of any advantage that Apple has over any Genetic White Box, but them I'm not interested in having a logo. I want [and need] a computer.
The support for your hardware, too? (See 7th line) I also wasn't aware that Linux comes with hardware swap warranty (see 5th last line). And how does Linux provide you with a ridiculous resale value? (3rd last line)
I'm really glad that you brought up these points, Apple have recently got in trouble for fitting their [not your] overpriced electronics [not computers] with refurbished parts..in China no less. They also got in trouble in the EU for only offering a 1Year Guarantee...When EU has a mandatory 2Year Warentee. As for resale value, cheaper machines drop less in price, Apple used to have good second hand value...but that was before the move from a computer company to an electronics company where upgrades to old hardware extended the hardware life...an option available to other manufactures.

Because it matters. http://news.cnet.com/2100-1001-202143.html.
