It's quite obvious neither of you read the article. As he explained, there is no code in the program that contacts them on a regular basis, checking to see if it's legit. No, it's all in a little server on Ambrosia's side that does a check against the registration number, once and only once, when the registration code is entered again.
The way I read it, this only happens when you install a fresh copy of the program or upgrade the program, where you do the check again. If you're a legit user and have net access, you get confirmed or denied right on the spot. If you're a legit user with no net access, you can email them or call them for a new code. If you're a pirate, you're screwed. It's as simple s that, and he explained it in the article.
I personally think it's quite ingenious, and wish Ambrosia a lot of luck, as they're a great company.
Like 2nd Post said above, 'User Friendly' does NOT mean User Stupid. Don't pretend that just because Linux/BSD largely practices the User Antimosity UI ethic makes it better than other solutions. To believe that makes you no better than the random Windows user, you're just being ignorant and elitist, and not thinking of things that could make your platform BETTER.
IMO, Mac OS 9 has an excellent UI, very user friendly and very powerful at the same time (I won't go into my Aqua opinion here). It is not perfect, and many things could be fixed, but on the whole it's very good. Do I ignore issues I have with a platform just because I prefer it? No. Do I make my voice and opinion heard and try to make it work better, for everyone? Yes.
I'm kinda tangenting here, but my point is that just because price of admission is much higher to get in for Linux, doesn't mean that by default it is better for the power user.
Oh my god, the CIA and the Illuminati are gonna find out I have a season's pass for Politically Incorrect, and watched an episode of the X FIles once! I'm on their list of the first people to be gathered up and executed when the aliens come to take over the world!
But seriously folks, what's the big deal with this? I would much rather have them know what I watch, find out the patterns of my viewing habits, and then make more targeted advertising so they make more money, enabling them to create better shows and programmimg.
There's a word for people that think everybody is out to get them. No, not perceptive: paranoid.
The reason Explorer does that is because the file in question (63k) doesn't take up the the full extent of the hard drive sectors that contain it (65k).
I totally agree. I thought the movie was really good, and everyone who compares it to the games saying "It's nothing like the games!" is a loonie. First, none of the games had ANYTHING to do with each other, except for airships and a guy named Sid (who is never the same character). FF:TSW had a guy named Sid and had spaceships, which are airships I guess. Also just like the games, the movie was a tech demo first, and a good movie second. Especially the most recent games, they've been flash before function, showing off those pretty renderers and what the PS2 can do.
Like too many other things, people went in with overblown expectations that they built up themselves, then they got disappointed when it wasn't better than their inflated image of what it should be. Try not to do that, you'll enjoy movies (and life in general) more.
Cribs is a neat show (when it's on: MTV seems to randomly drop it from it's lineup every couple weeks, then brings it back for a week, only to drop it again. Thank whoever for Tivo!), but it's stunning the amount of excess these people exhibit, especially some of the rappers and sports stars. One guy had a two lane bowling alley he said he never used. Huge pools that were used once a year. Gold plated everything. Brushed steel kitchens. A dozen cars: standard seems to be a Mercedes sedan, huge Suburban, Porsche, and a limo, plus whatever that particular person deemed expensive enough. Never driven anywhere, of course.
And remember, this is only the lower upper class people, not the CEOs of huge corporations or rich oil barons.
I suggest you watch an episode or two, even if it's just to laugh at the idiocity and greed of the upper 2%.
I purchased my copy of the Gorillaz CD (one of three CDs I've bought in the last two years or so, because I like the band) from amazon.com and ripped it just fine too. I'm on a Mac though, that might be it...
What happened to that old fashioned tradition of targeted advertising? While I don't remember the exact numbers, Google got something like 20 times the clicktrough because they display ads that relate to what people are searching for. Funny thing is, they're making a profit! Weird, huh?
So what's the deal for selling ads that have absolutely no relation to the site they're shown on? Or have nothing to do with the readers? If there were a form I could fill out outlining my interests that ad companies could access, or section in my browser preferences (similar to Opera's Advertising tab) that was standardized across all browsers that they could use for targeted advertising, they would see more clickthroughs, more mindshare, and more success in their advertising.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Did you read a thing he said in either of his posts? Because it looks to me that you and his other braindead critic somehow picked up that he was a) criticising America, and b) had an email address and home page in the UK. Does that make his analysis any less true, because he probably isn't within the borders of the US? If anything, it gives him a better ability to look at our system of government with a somewhat unbiased eye, without being dragged down by freeper wannabes like you. Strip away his being British and your confrontational attitude and read his posts again. Maybe you'll learn something, and we can make our country, and the world, a bit better place to live.
Dammit, somehow that url broke after I submitted it. Either take the space out of the last number (2366760 instead of 2366 760) or use this. The one time I don't preview...
That would probably be because this guy has his post stored in a Word file or something, because he has posted it in PayPal related discussions before. Here's one: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=22078&cid=2366 760 . There is a second posting that I remember from at least 6 months ago, but for the life of me I couldn't find it in the archives.
Is it just me, or is this just as bad as those paste trolls? Maybe worse, because he's getting karma for no effort?
.hqx files are compressed files, not program files. They aren't run, they are decoded with another program, which is usually Aladdins Stuffit Expander. This has been going on forever, since before OS X. Netscape browsers do this, as does iCab, Opera, and pretty much any other Mac browser. So what's the big deal? The file is useless until it's decoded, so why not have that done automatically?
Quit being so goddamn paranoid and eliteist, get on with your lives, and let others do the same.
You're all messed up. The button you press to get contextual menus in the Mac OS is Control-- which is in exactly the same place as it is on standard PC keyboards. The Command key (or flower, as you put it) is where Alt is on PC keyboards. And option (which you falsely credit for getting contextual menus) is where there is usually a blank spot, or the Windows/Start Menu Key on PC keyboards.
Also, Mac OS contextual menus always contain options that can be accessed from a regular menu. In Windows there are many times where you can only access that command from the contextual menu, which *can* be confusing for newbies.
Not that it matters, next time there's an Apple article you're going to post the same lame-brain gibberish about single buttons and contextual menus.:P
It was my impression that ION Storm Dallas (Romero's part) and ION Storm Austin (Warren's part) were pretty much seperate companies, much like Blizzard (War/StarCraft) and Blizzard North (Diablo) are. Bound only by name, as it were. So really, it's just one half of a set of sister companies going under, not a corporation falling apart.
Ah, but the REASON he objected was because the 7100s two sister projects, the 6100 and 8100, were code named Cold Fusion and Piltdown Man, one a bogus technology (for now), the other being a famous hoax. Then, when Carl Sagan found out, he sent his lawyers after Apple to get the code name changed. Apple did, and changed the code name for the 7100 from Carl Sagan to BHA, which he also gave a stink over and again had his lawyers make Apple change. Apple's final code name for the 7100?

In short, pike off! >:)
If the CD player is able to error-correct these discs, and the CD player has a digital output, then the user has an error-free digital stream.
ARREST THIS MAN!!! He is circumventing an encrypted CD, in violation of the DMCA!

Ever seen the movie "High Fidelity"?
Wait, they were trying to make a profit?
Heh, here's a fun quote I originally saw on /.:
Audiophile (audiophile), n. One who listens to the audio equipment, not the music.
I purchased my copy of the Gorillaz CD (one of three CDs I've bought in the last two years or so, because I like the band) from amazon.com and ripped it just fine too. I'm on a Mac though, that might be it...

because that's not what the blurb here says
You would believe what's in a slashdot article? Have you gone mad, man?

I doubt anyone in this world has the dedication and discipline to become a Jedi's personal secretary, let alone an actual Jedi.
Why do you all feel the need to worship a couple movies? Sure, they were pretty good, but obsessing over a fairy tale? Please.

Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy, and taste good with ketchup.
Nyuck nyuck!
"...but Attack of the Clones is still the worst. Sounds like attack of the _clowns_ "
So why doesn't 'Clone Wars' sound like 'Clown Wars' to you?

I really don't see how Napster could be harming anything anymore. I mean, jeez, there's hardly any music on Napster any more! :)
