Given the replies and acceptance (or discussion/argument which is essentially the same thing here) his statement has engendered, I would say that these days, most folks don't think it makes him look like a moron at all. Out of... what, a dozen replies? Yours was the only one calling him out for what he had done.
As for the off-topic moderation: it's interesting that every time it has been used on my posts, it was used to mod down posts that were totally ON topic with the thread they were in and with the post I was answering to. It's a mod that is probably often (always?) mis-used.
Indeed, as was mine just modded offtopic even though it was perfectly ontopic to our conversation.
I think there are two schools of thought: one defines "offtopic" as we do - not relevant to the thread of conversation at hand.
The other defines it as "anything unrelated to the original article" and conversely, ontopic is anything that is related to the article -- no matter where it appears.
I think since the advent of Digg's popularity, the tide has turned such that the latter have won this battle.
I think that's a dangerous attitude to take. There are a lot of people out there who don't know any better who will take seriously whoever is shouting loudest. For many years now, that person has been Jack Thompson.
The thing that makes him most dangerous is that there's an element of truth to his arguments. There's a minimal amount in there that makes the things he says plausible to those people who don't/can't educate themselves.
Not sure that's the measure used - especially since Windows 7 Beta is included in the 'market share' numbers. Nonetheless - your point stands. Unless they publish how they arrive at these numbers, they're meaningless (except for marketing...)
1. What does the first link have to do with the article? Perhaps a mis-paste?
2. Great! So where can I find a list of requirements for making my app WINE-compatible?
A couple of quick google searches did not turn up any such information. While it would be great to make windows apps "WINE compatible"... until they make it clear/how/ to do that, don't expect too many people to jump on the bandwagon.
Aw c'mon. You've been here long enough to realize that this is the most common (and successful) form of karma-whoring there is. Post a comment in reply to an early post - preferably in response to one that is modded highly - and you don't have to even consider the post you're replying to. As long as it's relevant in some way to the article, you'll get modded up. It's all about getting seen by the moderators before they lose interest in the comments.
To me, this is the definition of offtopic - since it has nothing to do with the comment being replied to - and I mod it so when I have mod points. Clearly this is the minority opinion...
I'd say I'm at least worth $60k+ and would be able to adjust easily to much larger environments if given the chance.
Given your qualifications, I'd agree assuming you could back them up. My point (later discussed further with the OP) was that too many people here in the states have an expectation of a salary very much out of proportion to their experience and abilities; or education and abilities in lieu of experience. This is a serious turnoff to employers, to the point where they're going to do no more than give a passing glance to the local applicant pool.
What can I say? Your comment and web site were all I had to go on. Glad to hear that I'm wrong - though I think my overall point still applies. There are a large number of IS workers here in the states who seem to feel their (our) time is worth a lot more than it is; frustrates the hell out of me because I work for one of those large banks, and we seldom even interview Americans for those positions anymore because of that.
(I wondered about the black on black too, but I was only looking at the content and not the appearance.)
Yeah, that's what I want to know. I'ld gladly take a job at a bank for 65k+ a year while I'm still in school, bankers hours would still give me time for class. And as an applied math minor, and a CS major, I'm sure I could handle these so called difficult positions. But it sounds like they weren't willing to pay the 75k+ a year that folks like me would like
The info on your web site says you have no significant experience in technology, and you do not yet have your degree. Perhaps part of the reason these companies are looking for H1Bs are because there are so many people at your level of experience who think they're worth 75k a year.
You're not; I used to be there with you, but I've gotten into it in the last few years. Ever watch an American football game? If you look closely, there's a wider game being played than it first seems - a huge amount of tactics and trying to out-think the opposing team goes into nearly every play.
These technological advances don't happen when we aren't researching them. We can't just invest trillions of dollars in oil drilling and expect efficient solar panels to spontaneously emerge. It takes interst and investment.
Um... isn't that research going on? Aren't billions of private and public dollars being spent on these problems around the world?
True but what you are describing is a corporate whore sellout. Who cares if the music is good, just use the auto-tone and get it done quickly so we can get it out to the mass hordes of 12-year-olds.
That's a whole different story. I said nothing about if their music was any good now, but I do believe that the quality is independent of any fan alienation they may have done...
But they are greedy litigious assholes considering all the crap they have pulled in recent years that basically shows they don't get it when it comes to modern music distribution. Alienate your fans, way to go!
Yeah, because those fans sure are acting like they've been alienated, what with the latest album debuting at #1 and apparently going platinum in the first day of sales.
Now if you had said "alienating the fans who don't buy their albums", that would probably be more accurate. But when you're running a business, what do you lose by doing that?
Why do you think people don't use amazon?

Kick & scream all you want pig, you lose

The coke commercial w/ insects was pretty slick. The rest were fairly lame.

Apparently "Calls from the linux community have been growing" translates to "an interview question where someone asked the question on Distrowatch"
I can see how the submitter got these confused, the two being so similar and all.

Xenix? Wait, is that the Unix used by Xena, Warrior Princess?

But as an Apple user, I don't have this problem... yet
There, fixed that for you.
Now if they were only smoking more of their product, they would remember to pay the bills...
See there? You would have done much better in the Great Mod Slog if you had prepended: "I know I'll be modded down for this..."
ours is NOT typical and people should know that. most users don't get 'baked' and drive right away. I've never known anyone like that - not ever.
I've known all too many people who will get baked WHILE driving...

e engineer in all of us is going to go "What caused this? how can we fix it?". I don't know. Part of me wants to blame the schools.
Not really. I blame him. He's the only one responsible for the decisions he has made.
To the people he "helped". I'm sure the spammers think our boy wonder here is hero too.
consultant who in last 2007 ...
As opposed to the 2007 before that? Or next 2007?

Now that I think about it, scares me too...
You ruined it though. Way to go, you ninny.
