As for slow, I don't know where you get your data from, but comparing my gaming XP box to my SuSE Linux 10.0 box, XP actually boots faster, and the GUI is quite a bit more responsive than X with either KDE or Gnome too.
Curious -- what are the specs of your "gaming XP box"? And you SuSE box? If you're like most folks, your gaming rig will pack quite a bit more horsepower than your Linux box. Seems to me that could invalidate this point. (At least the GUI responsiveness aspect -- all variants of linux I've tried boot slow as molasses next to WinXP and even Win2K)
I dual boot, and my XP Home installation exists only for the purpose of playing games. And yes, it does boot up quite a bit more quickly than my Fedora Core Linux does. On the other hand, my Linux installation does so much stuff and has so many useful features that aren't in XP that it's not surprising that it takes longer to get it all running.
My original point only that a blanket comparison of "a suse box" vs "my xp gaming machine" was probably not a very fair one when measuring gui responsiveness.
I don't dispute that linux has a lot more useful toys; there's a reason i still use it on the half-dozen servers I'm running. (There's also a reason I gave up on it for my primary desktop, but that's a whole other story...) However, even stripping down linux services to a bare minimum, I've found Windows XP to boot quicker than linux into X-mode on the same machine. "boot" meaning in this csae the time until I can interact with my desktop.
Possibly.,I've even found that disabling many of the services still nets a slower boot time by several seconds. My point
While it would be nice to think this is correct, the fact is after looking over a period of weeks, I can't find/any/ benchmarks other than yours that support this claim. (Yes, before some ninny points out the obvious, I'd been researching before you posted this, in preparation for a new laptop purchase -- otherwise it couldn't have been weeks.)
Um, have you actually read the Patriot Act? Of the Act's 10 Titles, only one section of one title (Sec. 504) even remotely relates to improving coordination among government agencies.
Have you actually read it? Or just skimmed the TOC? After having taken the time to read it, I can say you're not quite wrong -- but you're also not correct. In short: it ensures that powers already held by the US government for use in various investigations also apply to counter-terrorism. It expands what information can be shared and with whom (increasing communication) -- but it also limits the use of that information to the matter at hand. That's section 204, which also seems to cover improving information coordination. All of Title VII is also dedicated to information coordination and sharing.
There's a lot to the PATRIOT act, but contrary to popular belief very little of it is new.

This new evidence clearly proves that the Egyptian pyramids were built by aliens with psychic powers able to time travel using Soviet technology acquired by opening a portal into Nostradamus' talking colostomy bag from the future!
You think you're funny? You're not. You're just correct.
And if the RIAA does not see a corresponding increase in their music sales, will they then realize that "stealing" is not the problem, but rather a lack of sanctioned paid music sites which offer the quality, convenience, unencumbered formats, and broad selection that piracy offers?
It's a sad commentary on the RIAA when this comment is modded +5 Funny (as opposed to Insightful/Interesting)

DAMN IT!
Big companies have little incentive to use patents in any other way except that benefits their bottom line.
Gah! The big companies might make more money! Horrible!
Seriously, I'm by no stretch a fan of patents as they are today -- but arguments like this aren't going to convince anyone who needs convincing.
That, I'm not so familiar with -- I use it to run a PW, so I haven't tried to load a saved game. However, I have found that mods made in directory-mode can't be launched in the server from the command line -- and/that's/ annoying.
I bought three copies of nwn1 and two of nwn2... I'm kinda miffed that you can't run the nwn stand alone server under linux for nwn2. Actually, the server does run under plain Wine on linux. Not ideal, but it works. A search on the nwn2 bioboards will give you step-by-step directions.
I can't wait for it to start between them and the telco providers. It will be so much "better". Competition is good. Competition without oversight and some rules to limit bad behaviour sucks. And this is all about getting rid of the oversight - let the market regulate itself my ass.
You do know that sabotaging other companies' (or peoples') equipment is vandalism, which is a criminal act, right? How many more 'rules' do you you think are necessary?
If I were sophisticated I would know the word in the English language that describes this kind of behaviour, but alas, I'll have to rely on a fellow slashdotter (once again...).
I believe that the word you're looking for is "asshole".
You do realize that your own cited source states that overabundance of CO2 causes loss of consciousness without the person even knowing what's happening?
Not to start a flame war -- but what is your definition of not treating them well? I've heard that accusation in the past -- but all that's ever come across to me in Heinlein's work (especially his more recent work) is an near-worship of women.
Ah, well. I suppose it's all a matter of interpretation.
In an electronic voting system there is 0% margin of error. If you ask a computer, 1+1 does always equal 2. If the companies providing the hardware/software can't guarantee that, somebody needs to take a close look at their source code
Um... what are you rambling about? Please show me -- with in-context, relevant examples -- how any Sun-MS agreement can or will cause patent encumbrance with regards to Java's release under the GPL.
If you can't -- and you can't, because it won't -- then why are you bringing this up?
And I've "gotten away" without using antivirus for years. Three simple things:
1. I don't use Internet Explorer.
2. I don't use any MS email products
3. I don't download and run anything from an untrusted source. (Including unexpected email attachments)
Amazing how effective a little common sense can be.
If you want to see Linux flourish
If Novell is paying Microsoft a percentage of its revenue from sales
if there is no possibility Microsoft can sue Red Hat customers or any other Linux customers
if you buy a non-SUSE distribution, you could get sued
if Novell is obliged to pay Microsoft a percentage of its revenue from Linux
If Novell/SUSE becomes the king of Linux in five years
if you adopt Novell/SUSE products
if that's the road you want to take.
if Microsoft dares
if its assertions were true, there would be no reason to pay Microsoft royalties
Wow. Let me get this straight. There is one quoted fact -- consisting of ~2 sentences -- in this article. The rest... well, I've summed it up above.

Perhaps if you'd finally get around to upgrading from Win98, this wouldn't be a problem...
The bank worker is just doing his job, obeying laws that have been around far longer than this administration.
If you're going to be giving people grammar advice, you should be wary of duplicated words and mismatched tense.

How is it that this is cruel?

Yes, that was a joke. Laugh.
Don't be silly. It's only incidental that it benefits the public. Primarily, it benefits the airlines.
