I do agree with you that the price seems fair. Most people are not looking to buy every song from Guitar Hero 1 (or new tracks for that matter), they will pick and choose their favorites and then they'll have a party and buy a few more per guests' requests and that'll be that. The average person will probably buy only two or three packs of songs.

Very interesting, sounds like you really have something there. I'm asking because I'm writing a game where the main characters are introduced to a place where they don't speak the native language and I'm trying to find solutions on how to solve this without either making it really boring or have nothing to do with the game itself (ie. Bully-esque minigames where cutting a sheet of paper increases your art skill). This transition isn't supposed shouldn't take too long either (as it's not the intent of the game) and the only game I can think of that you learned another language over the course of the game is Final Fantasy X, but learning the language wasn't required and was more of a bonus. I don't want to resort to a Babelfish-in-the-ear solution either though I thought of it for a while. I'm more interested in the player's character actively learning the language and overcoming an obstacle.

  13. Stylus only games please on The Nintendo DS Games Wishlist · · Score: 1

My favorite DS games were the ones that used the stylus really, really well. Kirby: Canvas Curse, Trauma Center, and Elite Beat Agents to name a few. Three years ago I would have laughed at the idea of drawing lines for Kirby to walk on, playing surgeon, or playing a rhythm game by tapping circles on the screen, but these WORK and they are incredibly fun.

So yeah, I want more games like that. More stylus only games that are innovative and fun, I know that's a lot to ask from some developers, but I will buy your game if it's good.

I'm not trying to demean non-stylus DS games or games where you don't use the stylus much, as there are plenty of great games like that too (Phoenix Wright and Castlevania to name a few), but stylus only games are what make the system unique and wonderful to play.

  16. My experience with GWT on GWT Java AJAX Programming · · Score: 2, Interesting

A couple months ago, I was looking into different AJAX frameworks to leverage for an internal web app my group supports. Right now, we basically have a giant tree that is loading about 40,000 nodes from a database at once and then using CSS to show and hide our hierarchy of nodes. This was starting to become inefficient at load time, taking a couple of seconds for the tree to generate and then for the browser to render it. So I started investigating dynamic loading trees using AJAX and then doing a new database call for every node expansion.

First thing I looked at was GWT because I'm a Google fanboy. Their demo seemed great, and we started getting hyped up that our solution was right in front of us. I started tinkering around with the demos, basically hacking their tree demo into something usable for us to get started quickly. Anyways, it didn't take long to find out that to make things worked, everything had to be basically compiled into this horrendous looking Javascript (yes, worse than the usual stuff) that was obviously unreadable (not that was supposed to be). For this and a few other reasons, it didn't take me and a coworker long to realize this was not the solution for us.

I'm sure Google Web Toolkit is great for building a site from the ground up with, but didn't fit into our existing J2EE app very well.

Anyways, if you must know, we looked into the Dojo Web Toolkit and I wrote our tree using that, unfortunately, that framework seems buggy and prone to memory leaks as expanding one node can take much longer than the initial load/render for the CSS tree. We're still using the CSS tree in production, if anyone has any help, let me know! But that's my experience with the Google Web Toolkit. Short and bittersweet.

  17. Tommo and Hawk on Semi-Identical Twins Discovered · · Score: 1

There's a great book series by Bryce Courtenay where the first book's (The Potato Factory) last story arc tells about the birth and childhood of a unique pair of semi-identical twins. The mother was a white woman who gave both a black man and an American Indian the right to have sex with her on the same night (long story, read it if you're interested) and had a pair of twins where one was black and the other white. The next book (Tommo and Hawk) was all about the boys and their teenage years living in Australia and New Zealand in the early 20th century. Great series but the really interesting part are the boys, who are technically twins, but are very different in both looks and personality.

Actually now that I think about it they might not have been semi-identical but just fraternal...

Regarding God of War 2, considering the game was developed and published by SCE, did you at any time consider releasing the game exclusively for the PS3, or create an "enhanced" version similar to what Nintendo did to Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii? Even though the game obviously wasn't ready at launch in November, releasing a full 1080p version of the game alongside (or in place of) the PS2 version but also featuring motion control seems like it could have been a huge system seller for the PS3 in this relatively dry period of early spring.

It's so congested there and if you look for wireless networks you'll usually see at least five open ones, which is great for leaching but bad for everything else. We always just ran Cat5 all around the house, sometimes even as long as 100ft and going up two floors. Messy, but hey, we were in college-town. I'd say, run wired when you can, buy some cheap cables online at a site like monoprice if you're going to go this route. Otherwise, follow the suggestion of everyone else in this topic.

And don't split the cost of the (new?) equipment with your roommates. Buy it for yourself and when you move out, keep it. Then you'll have the best stuff on the block no matter where you live.
