3D is not necessarily CG. In the Blu-ray article it is described as:

"3D as I refer to it here, are examples where an item is so detailed and sharp that it jumps off the screen. The opening pull-out of Marcus' eye in Underworld: Evolution is a good example."

and in the HD-DVD article is described as:

"3D as I refer to it here, are examples where an item is so detailed and sharp that it jumps off the screen. The shot of Crematoria in Riddick is a prime example."

Sure, there may be CG in these shots but they need not be action sequences.

A money making machine? Give me an example where she has exploited the fans so much? The series was planned to be seven books from the start, God forbid she signs a movie deal, where obviously there will be seven movies. Oh noes, the terrible EA is making the Harry Potter video games.

So let's see, there's the books, the movies, and the video games. Those are pretty standard fare for any sci-fi/fantasy series if you ask me. Now if Warner Bros. re-released all the movies with super magical editions and she published uncut versions of the books, then I would consider it a money making machine.

I think it's just sour grapes over how many copies the books have sold, which I would bet, account for the majority of the money she makes.

  7. The real DQ9? on Dragon Quest IX for Nintendo DS · · Score: 2, Interesting

The real question is, is this the real and official Dragon Quest 9 (with no subtitle)? Square-Enix's latest craze is developing and announcing spinoff titles at the same time as the original game. Look at Final Fantasy XIII, there's the FF13 (no subtitle for the PS3), Final Fantasy Agito XIII (for the mobile phone), and Final Fantasy Versus XIII (also for the PS3). That's just one example, look how they're starting to milk Final Fantasy VII, according to Wikipedia there's something like five titles released or in development.

I am willing to bet that the "real" Dragon Quest 9 is being released on the PS3 and that Nintendo scored a one-off title and the early announcement. Either way, I'm sure the Japanese will continue to buy many millions of whatever console it is released on.

I'm 30 hours into the game and I agree that I think it's time for voice acting in the Zelda series. I'm not asking for Link to have a voice, just everyone else. There are some cutscenes in the game that are directed really well and are simply spoiled by me having to read text and tap the A button. I'm sure I'll be mocked for complaining about "reading text" as I've been doing that in games for 15 years, but at the same time, I've also played games like Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 3 where voice acting was the norm and done magnificently. If Midna had a voice besides her (cute) Simish, I think she would be a much more intriguing character. What about the bad guy in Zelda, or Zelda herself? Instead of booming villainous voices or a courageous female voice, I get "doo doo doo doo doo doo" *click* "doo doo doo doo doo doo" *click* repeat...

And of course, if someone considers the voices sacrilege, just disable them! Stop complaining about something that would not affect you in the long run.

I've read a few articles arguing that Microsoft is selling the Zune not to generate tremendous profit, but because they're sick of Apple basically achieving a monopoly in the MP3 player marketplace (obviously not a monopoly but props to Apple for owning the market so much either way). If you were Microsoft and over the past 20 years were part of a huge rivalry between another company, and now that rival is sitting on a huge cash cow that makes them so many millions a year, wouldn't you be throwing chairs simply over the fact that they're so successful in that market and you're not? Just ignore the fact that there's a huge chance to profit, taking away market share (and at the same time making deals with music companies that will probably eventually cost Apple too http://www.latimes.com/technology/la-fi-briefs9.5n ov09,1,2842252.story?coll=la-headlines-technology) is enough of a reason to get in a market if you're Microsoft if you ask me.

But of course, most people are well aware that Nintendo profits very nicely off each of their consoles sold, and that Sony probably profits pretty well too in the last few years on the PS2. This means that Apple will still profit even if its market share is someday similar to the PS2 and Gamecube and that Microsoft will continue selling Zunes for a loss even with the market lead. But this will obviously lead to the inevitable Iipod where you can change songs with the flick of a tiny remote.

  14. Console market comparison on iPod Has Nothing To Fear From Slow-Starting Zune · · Score: 3, Informative
Well, you can't compare them directly, but what about the 10 year head start Nintendo had over Sony? Ten years later, Sony has shipped over 110 million PS2's since March of 2000 (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e .html/) while Nintendo sold "only" about 21 million Gamecubes since its release in September 2001 (pdf warning - http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/061026e.pdf). That's a pretty big difference for a company that once held a dominant position in the console market but only sold/shipped one-fifth the number of consoles in the last generation.

Like I said before, you can't compare the markets directly for a number of reasons, but you shouldn't count out a company that has a seemingly infinite warchest and is willing to spend it to strong-arm their way into whatever market they'd like.

I graduated from UW-Madison in May with a degree in Computer Science and now work at a large corporation where the product I work on makes about three billion a year and has a very strict software development cycle. My part of the cycle is small in the grand scheme of things, but at the same time, I didn't feel fully prepared for it straight out of school. For one, there are eight releases a year (once a month when I started, now reduced to every other month and two special events each year), and the code goes through a dev, test, qa, beta, and production cycle. This of course made perfect sense to me when I started coding (90% Java, 10% PL/I), but it still took me some time to get used to it. Realizing changes I made three months ago are just this weekend making their way to the production servers feels really weird. Additionally, going through all the channels to make that change seems like overkill, but I'm only a small part of the process.

I really wish I would have had a class like this in school. Someday, when I'm rich, I'm going to donate loads of money to Madison on the terms that they have a class like this.

I'll have to look into this, but I was always under the impression that Devil May Cry originally came from another Capcom game, Onimusha. During the development of that game, which is 99% sword combat, they found a bug in the combat which vaulted an enemy up into the air where the player could continually slash away at them while they floated there. This led to the Devil May Cry combat engine where you could knock enemies into the air and shoot at them quickly.

I swear I've known this since for years probably from some gaming magazine, and the Devil May Cry Wikipedia article mentions it briefly, but doesn't imply that the entire game was built from this.
