    Make sure you have 1 gig of ram and at least a 2.5 ghz equivalent processor. If so, then your bottleneck is 99% likely your video card.

    Gezz, like CTTV over the internet is such a revolution? I used to work at a local restruant that the boss could kick back at home and watch everything going on. This was based on a Windows box with 2 8-port CCTV cards with real-time backup, etc... but this was in 2001. ;)

    Now we have DVR backup, etc. Interestingly enough, SyPixx is a Linux based product. http://www.sypixx.com/ It's cool though that Cisco is giving it a go, they actually might do a good thing here. I would like to suggest a few features: like lower cost on.. dvr capacity options, pan-tilt, zoom, feature software set, (Linux based options) and low lux options.

    I've ran SuSE in the past, from the 5.x series and lately 9.3 prior to going with Kubuntu. (I'm a old debian user) The things that impressed me in SuSE is the fact that Yast was soooo much better in 9.3, on the other hand I was turned off by the DRM crap, which getting around it was easy enough, but still a PITA. Novell's web site is also a nightmare, still about as friendly as in the early 90's. (hint here Novell, fix it!)

    I also never see advertising for *anything* Novell anymore. Humm.

    Mod up the parent... this isn't a stupid question.
    I happen to use VoIP with my cable company (phone, tv and inet) and the modem has a backup battery in it thats good for 8 hours. (as in not talking for all that time of course) My phone is normally a 5.4Ghz type, with two handsets. If power would go out, my phone wouldn't work because they need power, but thats why I also happen to have a $6.00 cheap phone just in case. Like another user posted, a UPS would be more optimal.

    My first virus came off a "commercial" 5.25" floppy that I paided for. (go figure!) This was back in the late 1980's or early 1990's I believe. Sucked big time. ;)

    Back in the day, I used to purchase a new album and copy it to a cassette tape or reel-to-reel and that was the "only" time the record was used. I had a quite extensive collection, exceeding 200
    albums. So, WTF is the difference if you copy a frick'in CD? If my friend "Joe" had purchased the
    same CD and his dog "Fred" bit into it, and I posted the CD on LimeWire for him to grab, I'm guilty?

    Excuse me, but fuck the RIAA. If some other person grabbed it while sharing it with a legit
    owner, then pursue them... and I hope they all have a original copy, (pawn shops anyone?) and then
    sue 'em. Burden of proof is on the RIAA, so prove that I didn't purchase the CD on such and such a date. Ugh!

    This kind of stuff makes me a little uneasy. On a practical level, the more complicated something is, the more ways it can mess up. Think about how often you have to fix your computer versus your refrigerator.

    Funny story. About 2 months ago my oldest son opens up the refrigerator and all of a sudden I hear a big "crash". I walk into the kitchen with a "WTF" look on my face, since I'm looking at our frig door on the floor. ha! The computers are running fine, but the damn frig crashed. ;)

    According to the site, "SandStorm simultaneously collects, correlates, and analyzes data on multiple computer systems and departs, leaving no trace of its activities. The White House is championing this cyber tool and the Department of Homeland Security has selected it as a cornerstone application for a cyber toolkit being made available to all Federal agencies.
     
    I doubt that this is more than a bullshit rumer. When I was in the service it was paying 40-70 percent more for even specialized tools. Having *all* of the various federal agencies actually agree on one specific "cyber toolkit" is.., at the very least insulting to me, and the public.(since they *never* agree on anything!)

    I had someone open up a checking account in my name back in the mid 1980's. The bank didn't even requre a ID for god sake. Needless to say, my mom received a call from the bank stating that I was writing bad checks, when she asked for a physical description about me, the lady came back and said I was like 5'4". Considering I'm over 5'10" they cleared me and sent that asshole to prison.

    Another stupid idea is certain states here in the US allow people to put their SSN as a ID number on their drivers license.

    Obviously you've never been there, or you wouldn't make such a dumb ass statement. Winter has been pretty mild around WI for quite awhile now. (must be that global warming thing) Now, if you go up north.. that's a different story! I relocated to Montana and winters are much more mild. Of course, you do not have ANY professional sports, (as in NFL, NBA, MLB) no decent cheese, snacks, and alot of other stuff I miss. Yep, I'll be moving back soon. ;)

    Most people fall in love because they have shared values, but they stay in love because their personalities mesh.

    I'll be married 14 years this Novemeber, and me and my wife are almost "totally" different in many respects. We don't share some interests, such as I'm a big computer geek that likes to try new stuff all the time, run linux, bitch about MS, and the RIAA. ;) On the other hand, she could care less about these things, minus the fact that her recipe database works, along with Yahtzee. ha! Hell, I like shooting, Harley's, amateur radio among other things.

    But then again we get along for the most part, (minus the obsession of "jewlery") and we do have some commen interests like camping / backpacking. I also do listen (sometimes!) In a nutshell, it comes out to respect, communication and just having fun. If you can't have the last three, you're screwed.

    Either or IMHO. If you have the funds to go, then go! If you're have a scientific background then you more than likely won't get into the program unless you have something of real interest, or serious financial backing. If you look at from the aspect of the rich person that wants to go, hey.. if they are willing to pay for it, then it benefits and pays, plus possibly allows that scientific person / project to go on board at a latter date. Can't really argue with that!

    Wow, just what we need now days. I realize that it was popular in the past, but really... we have VOIP and did that like 3 or 4 years ago, so whats the great deal about IM? (at least for me it sucks) I generally gab with my bro via a cell phone and there ya go. Painless, free (if you have a decent plan) and that's about it.

    My parents just visited us (after about 3 years) and my dad had a Kodak camera with the docking / printing station and that worked just great. The prints cost around .60 a piece, but that was ok, since we had them right away. (80 prints are about $37.98 here, vs 48.99 in Arizona) Granted, he could go to Wal-Mart with the SD card and get them for .20 a print, but sometimes it's just more convient. Personally, if he would have remembered the computer cable, I would have just copied the images to the PC. ;)

    I use a 17" Sylvania and a 15" Hitachi monitor on SuSE 9.3 here and it works just fine. The video card is a Matrox G550, a tad old.. but I don't do very much gaming on this system. The main thing I would check would be support for you're videocard, which should be available at http://www.x.org./

    Just as a FYI, I currently use a wireless service that is supposed to do 1500 down and 382 up.
    Now, I live in Billings, MT and the weather around here isn't exactly great some times. Yesterday
    we had 9.08" of snow, my internet went down, along with power for about 2 hours, and to top it off
    the TV stations went west on some channels. After about 13:00 today everything cleared up.

    I will be switching to DSL via Quest, and Direct TV at some point.

    My point? Wireless access is great "if" the weather is fine, but otherwise it pretty well
    sucks! Get some snow, and extreme cold temps, and you're just plain and simply grounded.

    This patent is a total example of the patent office sticking their collective heads up their ass!

    WTF? I ran a bbs back before the internet even took off, and we'd collect payments internationally off the site. I emailed these people.. will see if I get a response from their lawyers. :)

    Really, this kinda shit annoys the hell out of me. Why is it that everyone so sue happy these days? (I can understand SCO, since their lawyer fees exceed their total gross for the past several years.. ha!)

    Really, the whole idea in my mindset is to actually sample a entire cd prior to purchasing. Let's face it, some of the cd's coming out today suck, minus two or three tracks, which doesn't justify the cost. Movies OTOH, I can just rent, if I like it.. I'll buy it. Same goes with a cd.

    Hey MRI, put out the "Roger Waters Live from Berlin" on dvd and I'll believe. ;)

    I think it's more to do with declines in cinema attendance. By the time a movie is on DVD, people aren't going to see it at the cinema anyway, and the industry still profits from DVD rentals..

    Actually, here we have a "dollar" theater, so Monday through Thursdays it $1.00, Friday - Sundays it's $10 for two adults, with a large popcorn and 2 sodas. (kids under 12 are still a buck btw)

    Of course, all movies come to this theater AFTER the dvd is released, but then again... some movies are a must see on the big screen. :) I really don't have a problem with this though, since the last time we took the whole family out to a "new" release it set me back over $40. (back in 2001 anyways) Another on the cheap, at least here in Montana is I get unlimited dvd rentals for a whole $20 a month from the local store. Then again, I live in the lowest wage paying state in the union. ugh!

    You can go to the average garbage dump and find at least one computer that will run something like Debian without a GUI.

    Actually, funny as that might seem I did that with a old Gateway 100Mhz 486 full tower that I found in the dumpster. I added a few hard drives, ram and a NIC and fired it up, and installed debian. That thing still runs today, as a firewall and occasional use for the kids running Windowmaker.

    I did spend an additional $3.99 for a nice 15" Hitachi monitor at the local thrift store, but everything else I either had laying around or was donated.

    This is a stupid ass idea. I definately would not want to be stationed on one of these things, especially at that altitude. Oxygen.. gasp!

    I fail to see the need for this, since we have a ton of other ways to more efficently do this. They should put one of these up in LA but at like 1000 feet... it would be full of holes. ;)

    Good chance for some of the local consultants to make a few bucks off the dumb rich people. :)

    I seriously doubt that there will ever be a system in place that works. I can think of many possible outcomes here, but I can guarentee that none of them will work... why?

    Has anyone actually watched the DMV (or whatever the case may be) setup traffic light timings? It's like they work for the frick'in oil companys for god sake.. burning gas is it, stop 'in go.

    Something that is funny... I moved from Wisconsin to Montana back in 2001, in WI we had stop/yeild signs along with the normal traffic lights at all intersections, but in Billings, MT (largest city in the state) they DO NOT have stop/yeild signs on almost all of the side streets. (no state tax, so they cannot afford it..? doubtful)
    I mean, most people when encountering a damn stop sign blow right through them. (kinda like New York City.. :)

    Now add in software that controls these systems, just imagine Microsoft getting the bid... total devistation, especially after the "auto bot" virus. ;) Enough said..
