It was inevitable. Ricoh is not the firm I expected to announce such a gadget first, however.
I'm not really too suprised that it was Richo actually. They used to have to top drives in the market back in the day. A buddy of mine had like a 2x Richo drive that he payed around $300 - 400 for, and it still works to this day. (even after a fire, all he did is clean up the drive)
Personally I think this will be a good thing on the new drive reading AND writing all formats. I'll wait until the drive AND media prices go drop down. (hell, I have a dual layer dvd drive here.. and I refuse to by the media until it drops in price to something more comparable to the single layer discs)
And anyway, safety on F1 cars are multiple times redundant and even if the software fails there is a mechanical framework protecting the driver. The software largely handles monitoring tasks, warnings and such.
Ever even seen a F1 steering wheel? $50 grand. I would not seriously trust anything from MS for this. Think of it this way: you're trusting you're life to a company known to have shit ass software, yet you're trusting them to provide security and no "issues" at 200 mph? Not me, never.
I use bresnan Cable internet where im at (montana) and its usualy not bresnans fault for slow speeds. they reacently uped our speed to 8Mbps and i regularly see 1-1.1MB/s downloads from good servers.
Mod parent up. I also have Bresnan and have not had any issues with them. (quite amazing for a cable company.. and I've had more than a few) I get internet, tv and phone for $99us a month which is a good deal, considering I was spending that alone on 2 cell phones before.
I received my tech license back in 2001. (kc9aae) My friend and I both took the test together and passed, it was alot of fun. We studied for the test using online resources like: http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl I enjoy all the different things you can do, like building antennas, aprs, weather stations, etc. Fun hobby, but it can get expensive.
Mod me down, that's fine. First off, most of the comments here did'nt even RTFA and just looked at the pics. Yet most answers should be modded down to 0. Why is this far fetched? Never woke up getting bit, had a cockroach in you're mouth, (never lived down south heh?) or had other weird bug experiences? Some people have extreme reations to stuff, like.., trees, grass, anything non-concrete, mold, and insects. (list can go on and on.) So, why is so *ucking impossible? I used to think that carpal tunnel was bs, but a few months ago I had a sharp pain in my right arm, and now I'm due for surgery in June. Poof!
Both Mr Ball and Mr Stern further say that they did not think of trademarking the image at the time.
Who do think will win this? If they don't have a trademark, and if Wal-Mart registers it who will win? Obviously, it's been around forever.. but still.
those who voluntarily choose to major in hard sciencesenter university never having programmed a computer
My two son's, one is a freshman in high school, and other is in 7th grade have had nada experience with programming. Mostly, at least around here grade school is still Apple computers and then they get exposed to the PC's in middle / high school. All are based on MS products, and geared toward's learning IE or Firefox, etc. Nothing specifically geared at programming, which is a shame. I didn't have PC's when I was in high school but we'd borrow the Apple IIe's on weekends (rented a room from my old english teacher) and have programming battles, play star trek, etc. Way cool at the time!
Only people with no motivation or no skill make $25k a year for any extended period of time. You claim you have the skill, so it must be a lacking in motivation.
Obviously you've never lived in Montana have you? A lead tech for the the largest city in MT makes a tad over $20k. Hell, when I first moved here I started a job at $7.25 just to get by and people though that was "good" pay!
I'm a Mac fan who is intrigued by the possibilities of Apple's Boot Camp software. Now that I have a chance to painlessly dip into the Windows world, what I'd like to ask you is, what Windows software amazes you? I want to build a list of unique, elegant, can't-do-without apps, so all us new Boot-Camp babies can finally experience some of the great innovation happening over on the Windows platform.
Wow, I'll trade you my PC for the Mac...really, why the hell would you want to trade a Mac for a PC? Minus the gaming aspect..., I think this is a BS question. I'd rather dual-boot mac/linux vs windows any day.
I notice kids nowdays driving over the speed limit, talking on the cell while adjusting the tunes, and just unaware of what the hell is in front of them. (same goes for those old farts, ya know..)
To not be able to parallel is lame. I have to laugh sometimes with the fart machines. (jap cars with same sounding exaust) They suck! If they ever actually road in / drived a late 60's or early 70's muscle car, they might understand.;)
I wish Orwell's 1984 was required to be taught and discussed to death in citizenship classes in high school.
It was part of my required reading back in high school english class back in the mid to late 70's, and it should be required today. I swear, some of the stupid shit that they teach in schools today, ask my two boys about any WWII, Korea, Vietnam or Cival War history they just have a blank stare for the most part. Hell, I might just be old school also.
As others have noted, the cost per sailor on a combat ship is much more than just the salary. Recruitment and training costs, accommodations, food and supplies, medical and retention costs, veterans benefits, etc, all serve to inflate the cost of each person at sea.
I agree, but how does that justify the additional 70k a year? Seriously, I know everything is over inflated as costs go for the navy, (and the various armed forces in general) but still. I know for a fact that in our deptartment we purchased snap-on torx wrenches for 1.5x the cost I could go buy the same thing from the dealer. And that's just one example.
At a cost of $100K per sailor per year, this represents savings of more than $6 billion. Impressive -- if it works.
I really cannot see where they get this figure from, being a ex USN guy. I served back in the late 70's to early 80's and the pay was around 17k if I remember right. I was offered a 16k reinlistment bonus, but still.?
As far as the automation's concered, I can't see why this is such a great thing. Others have mentioned damage control, and thats a serious issue on a ship.. since fire, flood and such are a daily possiblity. Also, standing watch and checking systems is just a damn given. Then, the PMS (Planned Maintence System) is there for a reason. Gezzz.
ATI Sucks for driver support with Linux

ATI's 1GB Video Card

In a nutshell, see the subject. I really don't give a flying *uck if any company, be it ATI or Nvidia comes out with the latest and greatest video card if it does not have proper driver support! Anyone who's run linux for awhile knows the drill.
How many more $500 USD toliet seats does the taxpayers have to buy before Boeing upgrades their network?
Mod up from troll, since you've never been in the US military. I was in the US Navy and actually priced out the costs for Snap-On tools that we had vs buying as a "normal" buyer, and we're talking a 20-50% markup. Get a clue.
Tom's Hardware just had a similar review based on the above card. http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/09/14/the_geforce _7900gs_is_nvidias_new_mid-range/ Also, this one is a tab cheaper at around $220.
Now, alot of articles on /. have been kinda lame lately... this one REALLY sucks! WTF.

I'd definately go with the Klingon Captain's chair. Functional, yet totally expensive. ;)

My worry is that SCO dies quietly when it suddenly announces bankruptcy, screws it shareholders, and abruptly the lawsuits all vanish.
If people still have shares in SCO yet, they are either complete idiots or have a broker that should be hung!
It's the bankruptcy laws. 60 minutes had this on last week.

Just more bullshit from our goverment to pull out more tax dollars. Seriously, I have 2 boys ages 16 and 12, so I must be beating the odds.
For some Windows users, there will be two Patch Tuesdays in April.
;)
So, you can get two patchs and two tacos on the same day? Wow, now if MS can do the pizza deal, I might just install their OS!

How about adding steroid induced insects to carry said microelectronics. Arnold of bugs. ;)
