  1. What the fudge? on A New Concept in Supercomputers · · Score: 1

But generally speaking, the extreme high end of modern computing consists of a big ugly box housing that generates a lot of noise. I won't say that I'm much of an Apple fan, but in many cases they are absolutely spot on with the less is more philosophy. No matter how "cool" this thing looks, it doesn't really disprove that high-end computing is typically ugly box housing. It adds new elements of annoyance that I would not like to see in any room.

  3. Ridiculous idea on $5 Per Month Fee Proposed For Legal Music P2P · · Score: 4, Insightful

It may sound like a noble and interesting idea to some, but there are other issues besides the fact that it will be nearly impossible to divide the money correctly.

The real issue here is the morality of the fee. Those who are pirates download content worth significantly more than $5. This fee would be no problem to a person who downloads hundreds of songs per month, but a technologically impaired senior who wants to communicate with his children who live in another state/country will also have to pay.

If such fee would pass, then I say we should pay $1 to reimburse victims of pedophilia, who were victimized over the internet. And many other types of victims, of course.

My point is obviously that the music industry should have no say in this matter, nor any other industry or company. Or we could flip the coin and make the music industry pay for the rehabilitation of all drug users who snorted coke while listening to Kurt Cobain, or small girls who cannot handle the pressure of looking like Christina Aguilera.

Also, I would say that most people who use Firefox are experienced users. Firefox cannot grow beyond this market simply because my inexperienced father is happy with what comes bundled with the computer. I hope you understand that analogy. Most people simply don't see the difference, nor do they care.

Apple released a non-3G iPhone, to ensure that everyone who buys the first iPhone for $500, will buy the iPhone3G for $500, a year later. That doesn't sound like Apple at all, does it? For starters, EDGE sucks on a phone that is intended for YouTube, Safari and mail applications. It makes as little sense as putting FIAT tires on a Lamborghini. Secondly, Apple's top of the line products usually equip the latest hardware. Just look at their computers and software products.

There is probably an entirely different reason Apple "chose" not to include 3G.

  9. SpeedBoost is the thing on Comcast Cheating On Bandwidth Testing? · · Score: 4, Informative

Several months ago, New Englanders were the first consumers to experience Comcast Communications' latest high-speed Internet upgrade - PowerBoost Speed Enhancer. The speed upgrade is now being rolled out to Comcast customers nationwide. This new network technology temporarily doubles Internet speeds for consumers subscribing to the company's 6 megabits per second and 8 Mbps services, bringing download speeds to 12 Mbps and 16 Mbps, respectively.

Some consumers may not notice the speed increase when downloading smaller files, such as text-based e-mails and simple Web sites with few graphics. However, customers who frequently download large files, such as software, games, music, photos, and videos will now download at speeds that are faster than ever before. For example, PowerBoost significantly reduces the time it takes to download a one hour television program. Comcast subscribers at the 6 Mbps tier would reduce their wait time in half - from 4 minutes and 29 seconds to 2 minutes and 15 seconds. And MP3 fans will be able to download music files as fast as 2.2 seconds! See more here

  11. It's been done on Facebook A Black Hole For Personal Info · · Score: 1
I remember reading a story about a guy who had a lot of activity at Facebook. Deactivation of the account is the basic way of saying good bye, but very ineffective since everything but your profile left. Here's what you must do to get rid of your account, THEN mail Facebook and ask for complete removal:

    1. Delete your photo
    2. Delete Comments and messages you wrote
    3. Delete your friends from your friends list.
    4. Leave all your networks and groups you have joined.
    5. Delete all your photo albums.
It's obviously a ridiculous way of keeping as many users as possible. Anyone with just a few comments and photos will not bother. Anyone with thousands will obviously not have time to do it. By the way, here's what Facebook say in the Privacy Policy on changing/removing information:

Access and control over most personal information on Facebook is readily available through the profile editing tools. Facebook users may modify or delete any of their profile information at any time by logging into their account. Information will be updated immediately. Individuals who wish to deactivate their Facebook account may do so on the My Account page. Removed information may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time but will not be generally available to members of Facebook. Where you make use of the communication features of the service to share information with other individuals on Facebook, however, (e.g., sending a personal message to another Facebook user) you generally cannot remove such communications.

It's a very interesting question, but from my point of view, hard drive space is so ridiculously cheap nowadays that it is utterly pointless to look for a useful application that will fill it up.

Let's assume that the average computer has 80 GB of storage. Multiply that by 100 and you get 8 TB of space. That's what you can get into one or two computers nowadays without plunging out too much cash.

What's more interesting is how much processing power you have as well as how fast the internet connection is.

By the time it's ready, you read again: there is another one with 64 GPU's ready in one year. So, if your choice is to never be happy, don't blame it on tech. You're missing the point. iPhone over EDGE is a premature product, because the phone is meant to serve as both mobile phone and internet browser. You won't get that benefit before you reach 3G speeds.

You are obviously correct that hardware is under constant development, but put my point above to consideration and add the really expensive hardware you must plunge out cash for, suddenly some advice does come in handy.

I don't think it's so much about attracting customers who need a kazillion gigabytes of space as much as it is attractive to people who just want a service that works without any added costs. I mean, how is a regular guy supposed to know if 50 gigs per month is enough or not? This is flatrate. Use it as you please, just pay the fee and we [Yahoo] will sort the rest.

I agree with Linus Torvalds on what he said about operating systems. Basically, a regular user who's upgrading the OS should not notice a too big difference, nor should he have to upgrade the computer. The big problem with Vista is that it runs significantly slower than XP. Most of the annoyances are gone now that a year has passed since the release, so after a year of Vista, I am finally pleased (except for the exceptionally steep hardware requirements).

If only Microsoft can make Windows 7 blazing fast again, I have no doubt it will be a huge success. Imagine the millions of users out there who switch from Vista to Windows 7 to notice that things are running fast like hell now. That's what we need. Linus was right.

You are not looking at it from the right angle. I am obviously not saying that the entire EU ministry is agreeing on everything. My point is that some countries in Europe are looking at internet regulations (Germany, Spain, etc) and Denmark will surely not be of great help from this point of view since they've clearly taken the first step of controlling the internet. So if Denmark does this, Germany watches that, it will have a good reason to follow because it certainly looks better to imitate Denmark rather than China and Turkey alone.

Last but not least, just because there are indifferences, you must also admit that the reason the EU exists is because there are in fact a lot of agreements within the EU. Otherwise, it wouldn't exist at all. And the whole point of the union is to agree more. No, it's not important to the people of Europe. Any verdicts in Denmark will have practically zero value outside. If it was decided upon in the Court of First Instance perhaps. This case will not change anything in Europe in general It is ignorant of you to believe that a country cannot have an effect on the rest of the EU. Prior to this case, Europe had no cases of internet censorship (except for child pornography, etc). Not only will it cause debates, but also concerns over privacy in other countries if governments with similar thoughts reflect on the ideas of a pioneering Denmark.
