Is this a book on post-production or filmmaking? There is a huge, huge difference. If this is a book mainly focused on technical details of production, and you're looking for something about how to *make a film,* please look elsewhere. Filmmaking is a state of mind. It requires loads of thought, introspection and *creativity.*

The only way to make a film is to have an idea. Anything else is just a waste of time.

This is the interesting/fascinating thing: when I saw the image the first thing that I thought of was news stories / press releases from say, the 80s, about brand new "portable" computers--and I then imagined the future press releases for a device like this that actually *is* the size of a TNG tricorder. Exciting.

But the reason the church used latin was two fold, It meant whatever the language, the same message was being sent and you could go to any church on earth and understand the sermon. Or at least any chatholic church.
Except that the only people who would understand it are other ecclesiasticals. One of the biggest advantages of Latin sermons was that, in conjunction with a variety of other features of cathedrals and great abbey churches, was that it exerted a powerfully enigmatic effect on the peasants. These robed figures would parade around in elaborate rituals, waving censers, behind huge dramatic screens, speaking in a language that, to the masses, probably sounded like the language of god itself. The use of Latin was a handy way to actually demonstrate and enforce a divide between the divine and the human. At least, for Catholicism, anyway.

Most of them basically seem like half-baked article submissions wrapped into a half-baked question. Then again, has anyone noticed how many article submissions end in a half-baked, pointless question anyway?

Putting a lot of effort into cosmetic widgets is problematic at best.

For Christ's sake, when will people realize that not every advance on the web is a "cosmetic" improvement? The things you can do with AJAX make for better software interfaces that increase usability dramatically and frustrate the user less.

Of COURSE they absolutely must be secure. There's no debate there. But your argument sounds suspiciously like, "Hey now, these horseless carriages are a huge danger, a terrible liability on our citizens! How can we in good conscience let this newfangled technology run amock?"

You know, now that I think about it, we'd better start taking scissors and steak knives off the market.

Seeing this comment makes me so happy. It frustrates me to no end that software is treated as nothing more than engineering, with no attention paid to the conceptual and/or interface design.

ALL software needs to be designed. To write even a simple CLI program you need to know inputs and outputs, audiences and purposes. The problem is when software makers try to make a fully-featured GUIed program with the same mentality of a CLI.

Here's to hoping and praying that software companies will learn to take a few steps back, research their idea, reconceive their features and interfaces, understand what the goal of the program even is. And maybe even hire ... gasp ... someone whose sole purpose is good design.

  22. Right on on 15 Things Apple Should Change in Mac OS X · · Score: 1

Numbers 4 and 5 are right on the mark, as well as Finder refresh and file renaming. Also, keyboard navigation is still pretty half-assed. I managed to customize my MBP to have a semblance of windows functionality (in terms of keyboard nav) but dialogues still crop up with an element that can't be nav'd to. Infuriating. The article correctly pegs OS X as being far too mouse-centric.

It has always bothered me that macs are thought of as THE platform of choice for designers or those in some kind of professional graphic arts/design, because the vast majority of these people have never touched a PC, and thus aren't even aware of the tiny little details they're missing.

In the end, I don't give a shit what OS I'm using as long as it allows me to work faster and more efficiently. I can only pray that Apple realizes that they MUST continue adapting OS X towards "power users," an overstated name for someone who simply bothers to learn how to use their damn OS/computer. They have a great OS that works really, really well for people who have never used computers, and I'm happy about that--I've recommended new macs to many family members who don't need to (or won't) learn shit about their computer. But there's no reason Mac OS can't cater to REAL computer users.

Atheists believe the only consequence to actions in life is if you get caught or at the very worst, guilt.
Do you really mean this, or did you just hit "submit" too hastily? The statement really doesn't even make sense. What I think you meant to say is, "Atheists only resist actions if they fear getting caught or feeling guilty."

As an atheist, I believe the consequences of my actions are my responsibility. Many people feel the same sentiment, regardless of any other creed or "religion." Some Christians may resist actions because they feel it would be a sin, or an affront to god, or, as you said, because they'd be damned eternally.

Now how the hell is that any different than someone (of any religion) altering their behavior because they're afraid of getting caught? God (purportedly) will ALWAYS catch you.

My point is that 1) your post was not reasoned or reasonable and 2) personal responsibility is agnostic and is up to every single person. Whoever modded you up insightful was reacting as hastily as your comment was posted.
