I just lost my mod points yesterday, but I'm curious why anyone modded this funny? Even if it's not him (which at least one poster has responded to claiming validity behind the original), I don't see much humor in it. Sure, it sounds a little bit like complete and utter marketing bullshit, but I don't find it funny at all. If anything I'd find it sad that he doesn't quite get the /. ways...

Oh, and the fact that Chrysler's four differing divisions almost monopolized the bottom of JD Power and Associates' list of least dependable car manufacturer's (source, Chrysler, Dodge (made by Chrysler), Jaguar (made by Tata Motors), Jeep (made by Chrysler), Ram (made by Chrysler) in the order listed on the site) doesn't really help.

Based on your definition, every business I've ever seen violates ethical standards because they put people at risk, often for even slight rewards. I definitely was taught ethics in nearly every one of my courses (I understand and understood ethics before I got to college, maybe that's why I come across as not knowing this), however I never learned from this case or any case directly correlating to it until yesterday. The closest I ever got to learning about a case like this was in Employment Law where we discussed issues such as the Ford Pinto Recall and how, while it was terrible, its defect was, "...actually commonplace..." but media perception makes all the difference.

On a wholly separate note, I'm surprised that no one wanted to make mention that, without the Challenger disaster, we probably would have had something similar or more devastating within five years given how NASA was progressing and bending the safety of their technology.

I'm actually burning mod points that I used because I just have to point out that, I have a Bachelor's of Science in Business with a focus in Management (long title for BS of Management degree), and this topic and topics like it never came up. Not once. Not ever. This is more than a, "gleaming nugget of pure gold," as Rogerborg put it, it's a solid bar of it.

Management (myself included to a mild extent, that extent might be why I'm so low on the management totem pole) is far too often worried about getting the numbers right or getting things done for the sake of getting them done instead of getting them done well, right, safely, or not getting them done at all if any of these aren't and can't be the case. I am striving to make sure that, when my employees tell me we will not get this done in time unless we cheat the numbers, I tell them, okay, let's see if we can get as much help as we need for this (again, low on the totem pole). I'm of the mindset that a job should be done right rather than just done. Shame it seems I'm the only one within my company.

Yeah, but SoS is often running similar old stories again and again. "How do I use Compression to fatten up my kick? Well first I dial it in like this..." If you want a good audio industry oriented mag, you actually want to turn to a free (as in beer) mag called TapeOp, subscription link here (NOTE: only free in US and UK, worth paying for regardless...). I always find new things in TapeOp. Ironically, what happens in TO tends to be about a year ahead of any other mag or the trends. Don't get me wrong SoS and others like it are good, but after about two years' subscriptions, the only thing you care about anymore are some of the interviews, just to pick the brains of the big wigs, TapeOp always seems to have something new.

  12. Short answer, Yes. on Ask Slashdot: Is E-Learning a Viable Option? · · Score: 1

"Do technology aids help, or hinder, education?"

    Short answer: Yes!

Long story: When I was in college, I would often bring my laptop (my good ol iBook G4) to classes with me. I'd use in just about every class I could get away with it (couldn't in music classes, science labs, etc) and I'd often spend time reading a new book or catching up on facebook. That being said, there were also a number of courses I was enrolled in that I brought it to and used it to take notes. I'd still end up reading a book, but I'd find I'd get about two chapters done and about two pages worth of decent notes written, whereas in the other classes I'd be closer to five or six chapters (and no notes).

Interestingly enough, even when I would get absolutely no notes taken, my mind was still active enough to catch much of the class discussion and chime in when appropriate, surprising everyone around me (who saw what I was doing) with (mostly) useful insights on the matters. The thing is, when my iBook was battery-less (couldn't get to an Apple store to bitch about it still being under AppleCare), I was so far out of it that when the professor called on me I had to ask her to repeat the question more often then not. Never had that issue when my laptop was there, even though I was not paying the slightest bit of attention...

So my point is, they help, and hinder, but they really help when:
    A. The student is interested.
    B. The student is able to learn.
    C. The topic is important (I paid far more attention in my courses directly correlating to what I wanted to do).
    D. Most important of all, the professor/teacher/educator knows what they are doing.

Without point D, you can't expect a student to have A, making C less than likely and B difficult to develop.

Well, I said you'd be able to sue, didn't say you'd win. I know there's something about grounds for termination within most companies policies and as such you could attack based upon that, and if you were in a union position, the union would find major issue with them firing upon the word of some random individual who knows you, or even another employee who knows you and says you owe them money...unless they can prove it.

I know in my state there's laws protecting workers to that effect, but the fact that you were fired on the basis of slander would be, at the very least, something very litigious and you'd be crazy not to contact a lawyer. At the very least, you'd have your reputation to uphold, but then, there is the Slashdot famous Streisand Effect that may occur...

  18. Re:News for nerds, stuff that matters on Should Social Media Affect Your Creditworthiness? · · Score: 2

Any sort of publication is libel. Slander is spoken word only.

In the above example, though, that would easily be a slanderous lawsuit or, at the very least, a wrongful termination lawsuit. Let's think about it for a second. You are now applying to my company for a job and I am HR manager. As such, I contact your references and your previous employers asking what the reason for termination was, and they reply that you were terminated due to an extreme outstanding debt and they were worried about you doing anything in your power to repay it. This would constitute a reasonable termination and a decent reason to not hire you for most major corporations if they could prove it. As such, you would be able to sue the company for wrongful termination (if it weren't true) presuming they haven't done their due diligence and you would be able to sue the individual who slandered you (if you could prove it)

Now let's say Experian says you did owe the money. Until you clear that up with them, any employer that runs you through their background check will see that and compare you with another perspective employee who has similar credentials and throw your application out.

Morale of the story (at least in my mind) is we put too much stock in credit agencies.
