Freenet looks like a promising "nextgen" P2P network. It provides an anonymous, caching, decentralized redundant network that operates on any computer that has sun java 1.4 installed.
But businesses will see this as an easy way to manage their user's office-suite needs centrally, AND get support from Big Blue when they need it. The guys in suits like having someone to call when things aren't working exactly right...
There are also persistent rumors that the official Chinese version of Windows 95, which was written in Taiwan, not Beijing, contained hidden text (easter eggs) such as "Communist Bandits," and "take back the mainland."
However standardizaion needs to occur and one window manager needs development to the point of having all the niceties that microsoft but without the bugs and secutriy holes. Which one will take over?

if this was a 1.0 release then for sure i'd probably be
great to put the headline on the front page, but it's only
at.80, with not THAT many improvements+features.
Many of us have been using WM for quite some time (years). Just because it hasn't reached a trivial number revision doesn't mean it's not news worthy.
"If it was under the control of the FBI, with appropriate technical
safeguards in place to prevent possible misuse, and nobody else used it -
we wouldn't detect it," said Chien. "However we would detect modified
versions that might be used by hackers."
Yeah, right. Who determines what's secure? As soon as the FBI tells them it's secure, and that detecting it would threaten nation security they'll roll right over. I love the fact that the US.gov can HACK/CRACK all it wants, mean while it's citizens can't even watch an F'in DVD on their non-commercial OS because of reverse-engineering laws (DMCA).
And Microsoft has too much to lose if AOL moves over to a Netscape-based client.
I Disagree. If AOL moves to Netscape exclusivly and Windows drops AOL from their install, that leaves MSN as the default "Online Service", running the "default" browser Internet Explorer. This would damage AOL/Netscape's market in a huge way, and play into MS's Domination strategy quite well.

2) Its a new standard. It will never fly. The internet hasn't really changed since IPv4 & TCP/IP were implemented over a decade ago. Remember: we need IPv6, and we need "intellegent" routers if we want what people have been promised, the great "information superhighway". However, there are 10's of millions of hosts on the internet, and they all have to start using new protocols for packets, and IPv6. Before we start implementing major new changes online, we need an international, independent, governing body for DNS and the internet, not an American-controlled company. The internet used to be open and democratic, lets try and make it that way once more.
Correction. There would be no benifit if you were the only ISP on the planet using this, as all of the data you want to give priority to would be "off-net", not "on-net". Odds are your custiomers are looking to access multimedia from some other site, not your own network.
"The irony is that I actually am kind of excited about OS/X. I've wanted a desktop operating system based on Unix for 20 years. But I will NEVER, EVER buy proprietary hardware from Apple. It will only encourage them."
Apple is a hardware company, NOT a software company. To open their hardware would be rediculous. Remember when apple began licensing their ROMS?...

A properly secured linux box won't be "script-kiddied". And to be honest, considering the fact that you'll only be pushing 128Kbit/sec MAX, a BSD server could be considered overkill. You just need something to pass a little data...you're workstation could easily handle such a load in the background.
OTOH, if you haven't played with *BSD yet, I say go for it. Any learning experiance is worth having.
Gaming under linux will be a painful experiance at best, so long as Windows dominates in marked share. Just look at Apple. Their hardware is definitly capable of performing on par with PC's, however they always get only a few ports, and never in a timely manor (Q3A being an exception).
Game developers want the most bang for their buck, and having to stretch their resources thin to provide developement for alternative OS's/hardware just doesn't add up. Why do you think loki and the like handle most of the ports?
To see what the Church says about this. If life didn't start on earth, then suddenly we're no longer the center of the universe again (ala' copernicus).
Should be interesting...
Yeah, but does the thief in your story post the stolen items on a popular website too? If so, I bet the cops would be doing the same.

Maybe once they cocoa-ize it it'll be fast enough to use, but it's just dog slow for me right now.
Abiword/office-x win hands down.
Do what I did, and disable the 'ask slashdot' section from your homepage and stop whining.
mod this up!
Poor planning and implementation. As .us zone records are formated the same as any record, sounds like their backend blew up.
Take a look here .

Apple passed up the BeOS when they had chance. Instead of purchasing the right modern OS for their users (IMO) they bought Steve Jobs and NeXT.
Apple will never purchase Palm/Be.
Multiple OC-3's, hope this helps.

Their site is still speedy, despite the frontpage's comments.
