  1. I was not aware this was a scientific study. on Hard Drive Reliability Study Flawed? · · Score: 5, Insightful

My understanding based upon reading the originally posted materials was that they published their reliability findings based upon their own experience. I did not see anywhere that they claimed that it was comprehensive research into the reliability of hard drives. We should not crap upon backblaze because people could not be bothered to read the articles and made some faulty assumptions based upon the headlines, to do so would just serve to dissuade others from releasing their experiences. As for the argument about some of the hardware having known faults... If a company does not want bad press they should do more quality control before releasing crappy hardware...

  13. Re:Kind of funny. on Microsoft Fails Antivirus Certification Test (Again), Challenges the Results · · Score: 1

Ultimately the goal is to have a functional computer that does not unreasonably expose you to viruses. If we have a program that scan's all code against all known and potentially unknown vulnerabilities it would adversely impact the function of a computer system. Most of the products that do a halfway decent job of detecting viruses are the ones that cause the greatest impact to performance. The real question is what level of impact are you willing to put up with. I don't think any of the antivirus solutions built for windows offer a perfect solution. My largest gripe with current AV products is that they impact the functionality more than necessary. I would love to get the AV exec who said "Lets ad a firewall that is less functional that the one windows has built in" or "let's put an unnecessary toolbar in IE so that the people who are limited to a 1024x768 display can no longer properly view web-forms optimized for that size display" in a room.

Without more in depth analyses than I am willing to do, I can do little more than jump to conclusions based upon my own personal bias.

  15. What do people think about a middle ground. on USPTO Asks For Input On Software Patents · · Score: 1

Instead of issuing software patents with a 15 year protection period, how about we give inventors a shortened time-frame (3 years to) sell their product if they have demonstrated that have sales of a product and are willing to license it on the open market we extend protection to a full term (10 years). This way patent trolls would loose their protection unless they are actively leveraging their patent portfolio. Obviously the numbers could be negotiated and the definition of sales would have to be clarified to minimize abuse. Given the rate of change in the software world if you don't have sales within three years, your invention should become public domain so that other people can improve upon it without threat of litigation.
