  2. Gold Farmers FTL on Square and Blizzard Drop The Banhammer · · Score: 1, Insightful

I play WoW on a regular basis and I have read about gold farmers and how they detract from the game so it pleases me when I hear about Blizzard dropping the Banhammer from upon high. However there is one impact that gold farmers have that isn't commonly documented: racial discrimination. Because most gold farmers come from the same racial group (i.e. Chinese) other players automatically condemn everyone from that racial group regardless. If you say "Ni hao" to another player in WoW don't expect a friendly response. This problem also occurs in other MMORPGs. My friend plays Lineage 2 and he says there is a lot of discrimination against Russian players in that game. He has even gone to the extent of learning how to curse in Russian! It saddens me when groups in society are judged wholly on the actions of certain minorities within those groups.

  6. Good Stuff on Pro PHP Security · · Score: 0

While I do use PHP, I don't use it enough so that it poses a large security risk (I only really use it for includes, EXIF tag reading and browser detection). However I have still had my concerns about various aspects of it, such as the fact that it logs failed includes to an error_log file on the server, and this is why I would consider looking into this certain book especially since I foresee myself extending my PHP knowledge and usage in the near future.

This is a rather well written review and the book sounds rather solid although I am turned off by the abundance of theory. When it comes to learning programming languages I really prefer a more hands-on approach. This is one of the reasons why I chose to study website design at TAFE (Technical and Further Education for all you non-Australians) instead of university. Of course you can just skip all the theory, but I am unsure whether the theory is a required prerequisite to the practical sections.

Also does this book deal with only PHP 5 or does it cover older versions of PHP? My host only has version 4.4.2 and I am aware that there are many differences between version 4 and 5, especially security wise.

I would have thought that on a site such as /. that people would be more accepting of other races. I don't think I've seen more racially vilifying comments (All posted anonymously) on a single article before. He's Asian, get over it.

With regards to the article itself I think AxXium sums up my view best:
I enjoy viewing his artwork. Very tastefull, and always just right. I'm sure happy to finally know the man behind the pix.
  8. Re:What was with the gloves? on Strange iPod Accessories · · Score: 0
    From TFS:
The iPod click wheel functions by detecting the electrical charge on a user's finger and following it as it moves along the wheel. But gloves add a layer of insulation between the user and the click wheel, which makes it impossible to track the charge. Tavo's gloves let the charge pass through the gloves to the click wheel--while keeping your fingers warm.

Your statement is confusing. I mean I would go to the internet for help, but I'd never specifically come to Slashdot. Now if I wanted a torrent of obscure nerd "in-jokes" ("Will it run Linux?"), an endless barrage of lame puns, "razor-sharp" wit and over opinionated middle aged men then I'd come to Slashdot. Did I mention people trying to appear superior by posting "har-har look at the Slashdot community, in all its shortcomings" comments?

Despite what you have stated EA actually has quite an extensive history. They date back to 1982, predating Nintendo, where they were producing some very good games for the Atari 800 (Like M.U.L.E.). You should read up and indulge in a little "NOSTALGIA LOL".
