"The Opera preview is very nice, and they've done very nice work packaging it up. You can download it just about any way you'd want it.. deb's, rpm's, etc." - Yup they do package it up nicely. They even have torrents of it.
"I like the preview of the tab when you hold your pointer over it." -Yup, very handy for when you want to check whats in a burried tab.
"I like the built-in mouse gestures." - Good if your using a desktop all the time.
"They've implemented Ctrl-Enter to complete www.***.com's (though Ctrl-Shift-Enter and Shift-Enter don't do.org or.net)," - Yeah, but I'm not a fan of that really,.org, etc can be setup in the shortcuts preferences.
"Ctrl-T now makes a new tab just like Ctrl-N." - Yeah, didn't like this change cause I was used to ctrl+n but, it's easily changed.
"My only complaints at this point are the fonts/default interface and the format for reading RSS." - Fonts? I have the same woes with IE and FF.
"I love Firefox's drop-down live bookmarks. I don't want to switch to a mail-reader type page to check headlines, and I've never been into the sidebar. I've heard complaints about Firefox's implementation of RSS, but I think it's spot on." -Yeah, the mail reader could be nicer looking. It's really meant for power users who will take the time to learn shortcuts.
"Firefox with extensions does everything I want. Opera comes sooo close to having all the features I want even without extensions, but the default UI feels congested and I can't filter my news the way I want to. If I wanted to read news in a mail reader I'd subscribe to email lists." - It is very feature filled. Opera stated they don't want user submitted extensions. It's allready very customizable from the.ini files. They cleaned up the UI loads in 8 and I find it very nice and clean.
"Here's to hoping the final version fixes some of this." - Yeah, write them a letter asking if they will.
Very good Idea. Universities and me are always looking out for projects from outside the university. Great learning experience for the student and great prices too.
"If they were to include an AV as part of the base OS, AV companies would be lining up to take shots at MS."
Lets take another spin on this. If they were to make an OS that doesn't require an AV. Av companies would be lining up to take shots at M$. Now, ok, ok. We're all going to say that will never happen for whatever reason, but, would they not be entitled to sue for loss of earnings or whatever (IANAL)? Also, If M$ can't be trusted to make an OS that doesn't require an AV, how can we trust them to make an AV that can secure their OS? It's a conflict which can't be solved. Microsoft would lose both ways on Monopolistic behaviour, but would win on Sales. The way they are doing it now, they win on sales, and avoid conflict with the AV companies.
A friend of mine in College suggested this pattern of sleep to me awhile ago. (In fact, when I saw the/. headline, I tought he had submitted it.) I think he is fairly interested in trying this sleep pattern. I would be interested also if I didn't feel like it would interfere with lecture/lab times. It could also cause significant trouble at work. Convincing your boss that you need to sleep every 3 or 4 hours for a half hour mightn't go down too well. Plus if your boss knew you were undertaking such a sleep pattern, he might be worried about your mental ability to carry out your job. For now, I guess I'll stick to my normal sleep patern, 2am till 8am on weekdays and 4am to 1pm on weekends.
Hi, nice post. I have 3 email accounts, yahoo (yahoo.com), college (mail.dcu.ie) and gmail.com. I rarely use the yahoo account, I used to use it more often when I had a hotmail address, but I only used it for forums that were gimmicky and potential "spammer farms". I recieve the odd spam in that account, about 1 per week (very low, right?). Now that I have a gmail account, I rarely use the yahoo email. It's only with the last 4 months that I get the odd spam email in my gmail account from ebay phishers. (I don't have an eBay account. The emails were very frequent at christmas.) My dcu college email is all forwarded to gmail and I get none on that account because the college filters out spam with spamassasin and other filters. I'm not incredibly careful with my email addresses and if I'm asked by a website, I will generally give them my gmail address but, I will only give an email address if they state they will not sell it or spam me. I also opt out beforehand from any mailing list they have. This, I believe is what will prevent the majority of spam from reaching you. Thinking before Giving. ie: Don't go putting your email address on forums like this or CoolSuperForum.xyz, because these are farms for spammers. So if you like you can sum it up like this. 1)Does this site say they won't sell your email? 2)Is it a known business/company? 3)Don't post it on any forum. 4)Don't go signing up to porn sites or gimmick forums. Following these will help you stay spam free. Diarmuid.
Does this mean we should make bootable versions of browsers with inbuilt support for flash/shockwave/java/javascript/AJAX/... ? therefor having no need for an OS? or just make the OS more like a web browser?
"Opera Watch: Opera is a commercial company; how do you plan on generating revenue from the desktop browser?
Jon von Tetzchner: Through search and service deals. We will continue to provide services that enhance the browser experience. We were the first to include the search bar and we believe that has increased productivity a lot for our users. We will continue to add services, as long as they improve the overall user experience. The user comes first." from http://operawatch.blogspot.com/

I don't get what the "restrictions" are with this controller. (I know you changed your mind, but I'm addressing all the people who still think it's restrictive) It's by far the simplest, most intuitive, unrestrictive controller to date. Your givin true 3d movement with the controller, point and click, and it allows 3rd parties (hopefully) to develop their own "dongles" for it.
Nintendo designed this controller for 3d FPS/RPG/Racing/Arcade/etc.. including also but not least, action games!!!(although don't they fit in with what i listed?) They didn't sit down and say "lets make a tv remote and claim it can do...".
If people don't develop for this system, it can be their loss. If you don't try, you won't know. I may be a fanboi (without having any current games console) but Nintendo sure have me excited about this console.
Microsoft don't even do the cd's (i'm assuming based on..). My xp cd that came from DELL, and it's an OEM made in Ireland by "BUHL data service" (Do they make it for international markets also? or are there companies in each country doing the same?), and lots of other vendors have the windows installer on a recovery partition (HP for example).
Wow,you managed to bitch about a prototype. Congratulations! IMO, this technology is cool. Imagine this for a use. A Cinema screen that folds out from the side of your living-room window and doesn't require a projector! A map display in cars. Actually, this type of screen could eliminate the need for enormous display systems anywhere! concerts, cinemas, bilboards.. Hmm, actually, just thought of one other use. Laptops, notebooks! No more bulky screens!
Nintendo are aiming to broaden their user base with the revolution. They hope to attract more women and older males to gaming rather than continue with the current game design style. So if that's the case, you can expect some interesting inovation in the games that Nintendo release. Perhaps more gore, rpg's, racing and sports titles, aswel as DK, Super Mario whatever and Zelda...
Your paying $1.26 a liter, which is 1.06 a liter. The current price of petrol here is 1.16 a liter and is set to keep rising. So ye actually fare quite well.
But tbh, driving cars with 7liter engines around doesn't help the costs. Maybe ye should try hybrid cars? As seen as they can do 60-70 miles to the gallon now.
Interesting. But, you have me thinking now, because my town has 3 individual fiber networks. I currently have Cablesurf, which is cool because it's the fastest in ireland and uncapped, But with 2 fiber networks in the town, and a national fiber network connecting each town, I can't help feeling that my connection is actually quite slow? Maybe they have something planned.
Ok, maybe that was a bit blunt. It's just that google is a very popular website, normally set as a users homepage. Google having a link would attract attention to the aid movement and also point towards their "do no evil" motto. It's nice to see/., M$, IBM, Yahoo and other major online Companies supporting Organisations dealing with Human Catastrophes. If only large organisations did this more often.
Yeah that and the 1000 Iraqi's that got killed, and the Beslan schools 1st Anniversary. Oh don't forget the ongoing war in Iraq, the evacuation of the people in isreal from that place (cant rem its name) gazza strip? and the after effects of the Tsunami. Any others?
Back on topic: Cohen is right, M$ will have to accept linux and stop making these TCO's. Linux doesn't want to fight.
