    Theres a couple tricks to make proxy's not use its name resolution, use the IP you want. Use IPs, short ips, hex, oct, convert the ip. Havnt had to use this trick in awhile, ymmv.

    Biggest problem with proxies is sites like slashdot with updated content. GFX can be cached, but the html pages are updated every time. Sometimes I find it funny at work, when a site has the wrong time cause its cache. I force a reload that fixes the problem.

    At work we have a caching/compression solution, we can speed up text almost to 768K+ on wireless connections. Gfx are compressed, but not as much as text. Just imagine GPRS connection with a good caching/compression solution, DSL type speeds. (shameless plug) You can get it at ATTWS with Pocket PC.

    Proxy servers, They might not be cacheing 8080 or other Proxy ports. Check http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/

    Bouncers - You set this program on an external server on a port thats not filtered. You just point your browser at this IP/port and your outside your filtered isp. Check www.freshmeat.net

    SSH, tunnel or route from an external box.

    Really, If you cant go through it, go around it, either with software or networking.

    I thought if you made a large trip in space, having cattle would be like a biosphere. You would grow plants and tend animals, which would also keep you sane doing routine chores.

    And wouldnt you want to have the ship spin, so you can have some artifical gravity? Then you could slaughter the animals, and not worry about the mess.

    BTW, slaughtering might sound bad, but doesnt stop you from eating at McDonalds.

    Humm, (cough) Bullshit (/cough)

    Telcos dont make the same profit off a DSL with 1.5Mbit/sec as a T1. In fact every Telco offered DSL with 2x to 10x the speed, then after a short time everyone was buying these highspeed DSL connections and not buying any T1's. What do you think happened? The telcos stopped offering t1 class dsl services. The highest speed you can get on DSL is currently 768K UP.

    The problem isnt DSL, the problem is they make WAY too much money on Air^H^H^H Bandwidth. At our local telco, Ive seen ISP's run Cat 5 to other ISP's and sell T1's for 200 bux. And then the ISP turns around and sells it for 1500. Hell, We paid 3500 a month for an MCI T1 a few years ago.

    Bandwidth is cheaper than you think. Just your wants doesnt fit into the thier business model.

    I went with AMD when I saw the benchmarks from average users. The K6 had problems, and made me stay with P2/P3s. Comparing pricing and performance, AMD is better on most accounts. My AMD 1800 is faster than a P4 2ghz in all areas but the 400mhz bus.

    Just check out Mad Onion 3dmark 2001 and looks at the scores, AMD is leading the way on the top machines!

    I might have to get a dual AMD MP machine thou, the prices are coming down, and with newer chipsets for AMD, will make it even faster. 333mhz bus?

    550 bux for the G3/600 or 600 bux for the G4/700mhz

    Not bad, but soldered on cpu really sucks. And 15% seems rather high just to add a socket.

    I might have to get one of these bad boys, maybe someone will have an OS/X hack for it too. :)

    Exactly! Filtering is wrong, and expensive.

    Instead of working on issues themselves, they would rather pass the buck on the ISPs. Its easier to say "Mr. ISP" didnt block child porn/terrorism webpages so its "Mr. ISPs" fault.

    This does nothing but try to pass the buck. The only way filters will work is with a national database that can be updated on the fly. Then 1 site is blocked by everyone in realtime. So after the billions of dollars spent on the war on childporn/etc.. for the install, upgrade of servers, and years of wasted legal resources...

    They could just send a Cop to the guys house and arrest the idiot.

    Say "No" to more laws, child porn is already illegal.

    Whats next, DVDs not federal stamped as "Child" Friendly wont play on your dvd player? Oh wait, that would never happen.

    I was playing tribes for the longest time, and voodoo2 sli got about 60-70fps in tribes. My diamond 8 meg tnt card couldnt beat it. Then my GF2 could, my GF3 ti500 not only beats it, I can turn on 4x anti-aliasing, and it looks smooth. Thou the game is better on 3dfx, the engine only renders it perfectly it under glide.

    I bought shogo in the old games area at the store, tried to play it, had to turn off zbuffer/wbuffer to play.

    Kinda a shame, when your old games wont play on new hardware. Lucky I have a p233, voodoo2sli/tnt2/sb32awe/128 megs with win98 :) With real 3dfx voodoo drivers just for that "Wow" old feeling. Of course if I want really old, i go dig out my c64 or Amiga500. Currently, I just run those under emulation.

    Have 2 paritions, First the OS, Second the software/home partition. Ghost your First OS, burn ghost image onto a CD. Then if you have to restore, boot off a dos floppy, cd driver loaded, and ghost your OS back onto your HD.

    I have my main drive as a Win98/WinXP/Linux. After I update WinXP with all my software, updates patches, I ghost it. Then I have a perfect image of WinXP fresh with updates. Dont have to sit through a re-install every again.

    The FreeBSD installer is hard for new people, thats why linux distros take the time to develop nice graphical installers with online help. But then FreeBSD has always target the advanced crowd. But its true, after you installed your OS, do you really care about the installer? Nope.

    all the stuffs except the onboard AC'97 sound..
    Are you using that as a workstation? Then ya gotta have sound.. AC97 is widely known, must be a configuration issue.

    I migrated to linux for the tcp configuration, then moved to FreeBSD for my servers, went back to Linux for my dual cpu servers. Now Linux is mature enough and stable to keep using Linux. The gripes i had about the lack of configuration tools in linux/bsd has been solved in most Linux Distros now. No reason to switch again. Even thou people have stated the VM engine has major problems, I havnt personally noticed any problems or downtime. But Ill just upgrade my kernel with a fixed VM when the time comes. And now that I have a journling FS, cant find anything to bitch about. Well other than X-Windows (smile) problems. Ill be glad when a FrameBuffer replacement comes out.

    Bullshit.

    FreeBSD installer while fast and efficient is the same installer they have used for years.

    The main problem I see with BSD vs. Linux posts is nobody can ever say anything good about either, its always 1 sided. Linux has good points and so does BSDs. BSD isnt gods gift, and linux doent cure cancer, Both are tools that should be used for its purposes.

    The only reason I still use linux is its popularity and all the apps I want run on it. It supports the hardware I have, the applications I want are on the cd in .rpm format.

    If you must argue or promote a viewpoint, at least give some details. Then people can comment on your views, or give some insights, maybe offer alternate ideas.

    I have moved to Mozilla also, only a couple things I miss, a good spell checker (I still use netscape for my email) the win32spell.xpi is a work in progress so it should get better. So, no, Mozilla isnt only a web browser. (Flame away, but its a NETSCAPE replacement which includes E-MAIL...)

    Also, I really like how IE on the favorites/bookmark bar, the last favorite on the right is a pull down list. This is the only thing I think Mozilla needs. Bookmarks on your personal toolbar should emulate IE. Annoying, but doable.

    And yes, why does finance, marketing and hr still make IE only websites? Everyone else in the company, even our administration websites from vendors work with Mozilla!

    We have sun blade 100's at work, and they make great workstations. But being a rebel I wanted to put Linux on it. The only Linux distro with the best support was SUSE 7.3. Suse is a great distro, but they can only do so much without help from SUN.

    Some major problems with linux on sunblades.
    1. DMA doesnt work correctly.
    2. GFX card drivers, only the basic onboard card is supported, dont get the high end elite cards.
    3. Sound support is a hit or miss, sometimes it detects and loads the modules, havnt figured this out.

    For a 1000 bux box, usb and firewire, dvd, takes PC memory for a SB100. If linux was truely supported, they would sell ALOT more.

    The main reason we dont have terrorist attacks all the time is 2 reasons, we dont have an ongoing war inside our country, and we have terrorist monitoring groups. If we just refused to allow the 1500+ people in the states that were known to have terrorist affiliations, we would never have had 911. But that would make too much sense, wouldnt it?
