Having to deal with gun toting security staff, being strip searched, waiting hours without food/water would play on anyones nerves. Isnt this a form of torture?
Really gets fun when you have backup interfaces, load balance interfaces, command and control interfaces, heart beat interfaces, etc, etc.. And then throw in clustering.:)
An example of a database machine
MNDB01 - main machine (Local host name also) MNDB01a - failover interface MNDB01b - Backup interface (We use 192.168.x.x for backup network only, you got 3 non-routable networks to use!) MNDB01c - Control interface MNDB01h - heartbeat interface (If clustered) We use sun boxes with dual quad nic cards and 2 internal nics for 10 total)
MNDB02 - cluster server MNDB11 - Complex 1, etc, get the idea.
We also use domain names cc.work.com - command and control network, which we use for ssh/www/etc.. mndb01c.cc.work.com is only accessable from our secure desktop network for the network operation command center. Only way into the servers, this is your work network for maintence and configuration. It does not touch a production router.:)
All production servers that talk to the main DB will use MNDB01.production.work.com (Different Network!) All communications with the other servers use the production network, unless you have a dedicated network for this bandwidth. Sometimes good for syslog servers to log into 1 syslogd server.
I really like the idea of region addresses, but you can go really overboard. database01.location.valley.city.zip.state.carrier. dept.company.com
Washington State crim^H^H^H^HPoliticians don't care about the public. We have passed numerous tax breaks just to have them over turned in court, because they infringe on the states rights to tax. They would love it if we just shut up and let the do whatever they want.
The politics are just as bad as any other state, they will screw you over any way they can to make a buck.
However, it's more complicated than that. Recordable DVD technologies are a single-sided, single-layer format that holds 4.7GB. I own a lot of DVD movies, and just about every movie in my collection uses one or more single-sided, dual-layer discs that hold 9.4GB each. There are exceptions; I have a few double-sided, single-layer discs that have a widescreen version on one side and a pan and scan on the other, but those are few and far between. I'm sure you can see the problem at this point. In the vast majority of cases, it's the 10-lbs.-of-crap/5-lb.-sack problem: it just won't fit.
I can hear your next question: But can't we just break the movie up onto multiple discs? Again, in theory, I'm sure it's possible. But at that point you're talking about completely redoing all the menus on the DVD, so each disc only has menu selections for the stuff on that disc. Can you say "time-consuming?"
The DeCSS rippers ive seen rips region and macrovision! Strip the extra tracks, downmix the AC3 (God no, but for size if you must) and you can fit it on one 4.7 DVD. I personally cant wait for this use, so I can stop using my vhs/cdr solution. I would rather dump in divx or mpeg2 onto a dvd disc. Lucky I can get about 2-3 tv shows on CD.
Am I the only one who records Futurama in divx or pmeg on CD? How about you tivo users, dumping to tape/cd? (BTW, this is fair use, so dont start bashing me..)
Soon as the cost comes down per DVDR blank, Im getting one. 35 Cents for a blank keeps me using CDR.
Security is never a concern for developers, but it better be for the operations group. Anyone can put in a node, but someone feed and water it while its in production. We have teams that do this on a daily basis, more proactive then reactive, if you just sit by and wait for alarms, you can expect an alarm "You've been hacked..."
BTW, I have to make sure my patches are upto date, and do regular security audits. But im doing 2G/3G data, which is a little different from voice. Thou in the 3G voice/data world, its has more inter-dependices than 2g.
Not true. 3G networks are built from the ground up with security and operability. There isn't the 100+ legacy issues to deal with. Our 3G network is an overlay network, it sits on top of the 2G network, and is deployed where the demand is, then rolled out on schedule. We have more firewalls, command and control networks, backup networks, and intrusion detection on these networks than on the 2G. This is the future of the company, we want to make sure its damn secure and unbreakable, we get to build it right this time, perfect.
Currently we don't use IPv6, Our phone IP space is nat'ed. But we don't even care about your IP, we bill on your IMSI which is programmed in your SIM Card. But yes, we have these neat sniffers that will show your phone from the (gb) base station link to the (gi) Internet connection. Nice real time ping pong charts that show your every move. Oh yes, and we have location based services, we know where you are. (For E911 etc..)
