  1. Air Traffic Control on Should the US Go Offensive In Cyberwarfare? · · Score: 1

Even if hackers/governments were to bring down an Air traffic control system, the chances anybody would die are slim. At least in the USA, approach controls are still equipped with old-school battery radios, and will land the planes that way. Occasionally they do it this way now, from freak system outages, etc.

yes, I am a Middle East/Islam historian Stop spreading lies.

Some of what your saying is true for a very small subset of the Islamic faith. On the whole however you are very wrong. Read up on the Islamic concept of People of the Book. In a nutshell it states that Jews and Christians, because they are sons of Abraham, like Muslims, are not as pure as Muslims, but that conversion ISNT necessary. You put a link to Muslim conquests but you made the mistake of assuming that meant conversion. If you read the wiki link you posted, you might have noticed this

"for example Jews and Christians in Persia and Monophysites in Syria, were disloyal and sometimes even welcomed the Arab invaders, largely because of religious conflict in both empires."

Islam did not become at all violent against Christians or Jews until after the crusades. Even then, it was an effort for the Islamic leaders of the time to get their people to fight against Christians, even through they were BEING INVADED. Modern hatred towards the west is based upon the actions of our countries during the past 100 years, especially the creation of a Jewish state on land that had been peacefully Arab for 1400 years. Thanks for playing, through.

Hijackings prior to 9/11 did not usually involve the plane being used as a weapon itself. It's easy now to say "stupid passengers should have stopped them, stupid government should have shot them down" but the reality is that before 9/11 the best way to handle a hijacking was to let the hijacker do whatever he wanted, because the plane would eventually land, and then they could be arrested. Go read about some hijackings before September 11th, and you will see why.

Before 9/11 hijackers had goals that INVOLVED SURVIVING.

During the 2004 election circuit, GW Bush came to the town next to the one I live in, and gave a stump speech in a gym. The HS band I played in at the time was invited to come and play at the event.

We came in uniform, and of course our uniforms have little metal bits all around them. We were sent through metal detectors, but after about 3 kids (out of 300 in the band and colorguard), they stopped caring if you beeped or not. It would have been easy to bring in a weapon.

The worst part was that once we were inside, the Secret Service said we couldnt play when the pres was in the building, so that they could hear if a gun was fired. When he got there, they ended up blaring a recorded version of the national anthem on their setup speakers at a much louder volume then we could have produced!

Considering that I'm just wrapping up a semester of violin methods for a music ed degree, I find this achievement more impressive then building a robot to play any other instrument that I can think of because the violin requires extremely precise movements and pressure. The strings take a fair amount to force to depress, but the instrument itself is rather fragile. Also, to get an even sound out of it, the bow pressure has to constantly and smoothly changed while moving.

Cell phones do mess with ATC.

My father is an Air Traffic Controller at Boston Logan International. When one of the controllers uses his/her cell phone in the TRACON (room full of radarscopes), it causes interference with the radios. This is probably why they were first banned. The interference is very minor however, and thats when the phone is within feet of the radios. It's easy to understand the fear from the airlines, and pilots view, that some new cellphone type/radio could really fuck things up for the avionics/radio in a plane.

I hope there's also some contention about what will happen when those closer-together planes are left without GPS due to a war in the Gulf or some technical glitch, and the radar backup cannot keep up with the added traffic Occasionally the systems used by air traffic controllers have massive failure. When they do, the controllers bust out a piece of paper, a pen, and an old fashioned radio to get the job done of landing the aircraft. They write down everything they can remember, and go from there. I know this happens occasionally at Logan Airport in Boston, and will surmise they have the same backup system at other TRACONS and facilities. At the very least you need better filtering to enable the controller to see the aircraft he has to control and not be distracted by uncontrolled aircraft nearby. If they didn't have this already, many radars used by air traffic controllers would show not only aircraft, but 18 wheelers, boats, and other large objects. As it is now, they filter out anything moving under a certain speed. They don't filter what aircraft they see. At the very least their radar scopes show the actual pings off of any object going fast enough. No aircraft thats flying can simply disappear, contrary to what many people may think.
