Apple is also not sitting still - and using webkit as well. Checkout squirrelfish, somebody will one day do a benchmark of the above three. One interesting feature the ff3 monkey camp is working on is ironpython and ironruby support, which goes in the direction of microsoft's silverlight's idea
Lookup the intelligent grey parrots Alex or N'kisi, of which the intelligence has been compared to the intelligence of 6 year old human. Their intelligence might have evolved as a as "a consequence of their history of cooperative feeding as largely tree-dwelling birds in central Africa" (wikipedia: gray parrots).
It might be that mirror neurons play an important role in the developmenet of intelligence:
"A mirror neuron is a neuron which fires both when an animal acts and when the animal observes the same action performed by another (especially conspecific) animal. Thus, the neuron "mirrors" the behavior of another animal, as though the observer were itself acting. These neurons have been directly observed in primates, and are believed to exist in humans and in some birds. In humans, brain activity consistent with mirror neurons has been found in the premotor cortex and the inferior parietal cortex." (wikipedia mirror neuron).
yes the 4000 is super, i have two. however the new apple bt keyboard might be replacing it because of the pre's the space and light touch outweigh the cons (non-ergonomic).
I remember that Bob Wallace (ninth Microsoft employee) posted in alt.drugs.psychedelics years ago that Microsoft experimented with I believe 2C-* phenethylamines as enhancers for creativity and concentration for programming. Unfortunately most of his posts got deleted from the google groups archive after or shortly before his untimely death a few years ago.
I did copy most of his posts before they went offline, but they are on some lost harddisk/zipdrive somewhere... which would take longer to find then this topic will stay alive and read on slashdot.
hi tony, tried several hud's with several computers and a mouse.
when walking around, a mouse interface is not going to work - you cannot navigate space and use a point and click interface at the same time. So you have to go back to keyboard mode and preferably use an integrated audio desktop.
the million dollar question is - can you type faster (no point and click) with this setup then with one hand (>30 wpm)?
For remote administration of windows the rdp protocol performs adequately on 28k8, there is an equivalent project for linux called freenx. Forget about VNC, it's to painful at these speeds (perhaps 640x480 in fuzzy mode will work).
Ofcourse you can install ssh with compression for terminal access.
For faster internet browsing you can install a proxy on a dedicated faster line someplace else that resizes images and gzips webpages on the fly such as webcleaner. You can also use mobile versions of internet pages for lower bandwidth, for example diggm8
Put all technical documentation on your local system for fast and easy access. For example wikipedia database dumps can be downloaded and used offline.
Use pop3/imap offline mail clients instead of webmail clients to check your e-mail, leave large attachments on the server.
Forget about VOIP, just use the phone or instant messaging.
Forget about YouTube, just program your digital video recorder one week ahead for all the interesting shows.
AFAIK this idea has not been implemented with 5-7 finger chorded keyboards. I researched it when designing a 5 finger chording keyboard layout (most frequent letters below each finger). The problem with these alternative one handed keyboards is that you can type a lot faster on a normal keyboard as you can use both hands. So this would great for wearable setups where using a normal keyboard can be impractical. But for wearable keyboard input speed both Matias HalfKeyboard (patented) and Frogpad (patented) are faster. If you use the increased address space with this method combined with a 5 finger chorded keyboard one for example could assign the top 300 english words and you might beat the previous two in typing speed.
In the meantime I'll just use two split mini dvorak keyboards for my left and right hand while on the go.
actually that is not the case, calorie restriction (CR) makes you live longer with a positive impact on your health - including heart diseases. the only issue is the social and psychological impact such a restrictive diet has on your life. the alternative is going on an alternate day diet, or using these longlivety genes turn-on's, like resveratol. these have non of the problems - instant extra 30 years!
Rupert Sheldrake related his experiment with pigeons in the dutch science series "een schitterend ongeluk" by Wim Kayser. He mentioned that they ruled out magnetic field detection by putting a electromagnetic coil around their heads and blindfolding them, moving their homebase. They still managed to find their way back to the homebase.
in the context of my stereoscopy hobby for use with my emagin z800 vr visor i discovered software that was able to detect some depth dimension from the movement from frame to frame in a movie. The tech has been developed by a company called Soft4D, which doesn't exist anymore. But it seems http://www.colorcode3d.com/ sells a version of the software for use with any normal 2D DVD's and their stereoscopic 50 eurocent glasses. It sure adds some depth to a 2D movie, no true 3D effect but still remarkable and more immersive to watch then just 2D.
"support for their own worthless WMV/WMA formats."
while i agree with the feature creep i must say that the wma format beats the competition in the low bitrate area (8-64 kbps), with it I can maximize the space in my 20 euro 128 megabyte mp3 player.
With a complex codec as H.264 you'll also need more resources on the decoding end. If you go above 320x240 resolution users who don't have h.264 hardware support can't keep up, that means sub Ghz processors and (currently) all mobile devices.
aacPlus and Ogg Vorbis aren't supported on a lot of players (the majority?) so you have to inform users to download and install a specific program.
So don't be harsh on MP3, it is supported by almost every device (except for people still using sub 386 machines) and it takes less power to decode on portable devices.
Concerning the performance at low bitrates: lame -V9 --abr 8 -mm -a --lowpass 5 --athtype 2 -X3 sounds better to my ears then the Ogg (latest Aotuv) or aacPlus equivalent.

Would the same problem exist with ssl vpn's like openvpn?

Not true, check http://forum.ntfs-3g.org/ for ntfs-3g parameters to mount rw.
i got ext2 filesystem corruption as osx disk utility wanted to repair the partition.

how does this relate to synchronicity; could it be the difference between the lost madmen and the mystics who have found the way out of the cave?
7-zip, multiplatform, superior speed and compression, open source.
perhaps i misunderstand what you mean, but video skype works perfectly in osx here.
