You missed the point. His point was that they are saying the elementary mass particle has more mass than a non-elementary mass particle. If a Higgs boson has more mass than an electron, what gives the electron its mass?
You are right about how I feel for the first two of those points but not the third. My intention was simply to point out that the issue is not as black and white as some are making it out to be. I think the ideal solution would have people financially responsible for their self-inflicted conditions but not otherwise. Unfortunately, the distinction can be difficult to make.
While I agree with your sentiment, I hope you realize that your elders may just want you to not repeat their mistakes. It is not necessarily ALL stupidity on their part. (Just most of it)
The fact that it could have been one of those settings and had the plot still work but B&L was chosen is exactly why it is NOT a macguffin, not the other way around.
Get your argument straight. You were saying that people that thought they were working for the common good were working for the common good by definition. No one is saying that someone working for the common good isn't working for the common good. Whether you think killing infidels for the common good actually is for the common good or not is completely irrelevant. In this argument all that matters is whether or not they thought it was for the common good. And they did, and it wasn't. So you are wrong.
You don't honestly believe that the 9/11 guys thought that they were doing what the were for the invisible sky man. You said that it is their intent that matters and what they think, not your interpretation of their intent. My points still stand.
In addition, the bee analogy is a poor one since one person's actions in that case are completely accidental rather than intentional. A better analogy is one where one man kills 10 guys because he thinks it will save the world (he thinks they're bad or something) vs one guy who does it for the sake of killing alone.
Yes, intent matters, but it is far from being less important than result. Again, ask the victims. I'm sure that the people starving because they now can't afford food really care that the lobbyists had good intentions for the earth.
I agree completely. Sands of Time was a platforming puzzle game with a sprinkle of action. The latter two were hack and slash platformers with some jumping and climbing.
I am sure that the people who ran airplanes into the twin towers thought that they were working for the common good. They should not be culpable? If Hitler thought he was working for the common good by cleansing the earth for the benefit of the Aryan race is he not culpable. What about those that are willfully ignorant? It is not as if there weren't people saying ethanol from corn would drive up food prices before the gov't started subsidizing it.
I strongly disagree that intent matters more than result. Tell that to the families of the 10 pedestrians.
You misunderstood me. I wasn't talking about people lying about working for the common good. I was talking about people who think they are working for the common good but they really aren't. They don't know because they are uneducated/unwilling to find out if they have a good solution. For example, all the proponents of ethanol from corn thought they were working for the common good, and now it turns out that the net pollution is about the same as oil and thousands will go starving due to high oil prices.
P.S.
Don't be such an asshole.
Unfortunately, in this world what actually happens is a solitary altruistic genius is routed by a coordinated effort of retards working for the [perceived] benefit of themselves.
So you're basically saying that the nice guys aren't really nice, they are just pretending to be nice because they think it will win them girls. I call bullshit on that.
Wow, you really took that statement and ran with it didn't you?
I don't think he was saying at all that this guy or anyone not being a "good little sheep" should just shut up and work blah blah blah. He was trying to say that people that do their jobs without going and fishing for recognition will get noticed. This is absolutely true. Do your job and do it well without complaining or digging for praise and you will move up.
I have worked in corporate America and I can honestly say, other people spend so much time goofing off (reading slashdot) that it is easy to shine by just doing your job.
They released the Sunwell at the same time, a 25-man highest end raiding dungeon. I'd hardly call that something for any but the most hardcore pve players.
Am I the only one who watched the video just to see if that was really there?
By the way, that's Stan Marsh's dad, Randy.

What about people who engage in risky activity such as smoking or drinking? Should I shoulder the burden of their poor decision making? I think not.
Playing Wii is supposed to be social and beer pong can be messy. That's the only reasoning I can think of.
While I agree with your sentiment, I hope you realize that your elders may just want you to not repeat their mistakes. It is not necessarily ALL stupidity on their part. (Just most of it)
I think it is an apples and oranges kind of thing. How can you judge the acting of an animated film in the same way as a live action film?

How you keep getting modded up is beyond me.
doh, that was supposed to be "more important than result" not less.

This is the most reasonable post I've ever read on Slashdot.
I think some women also mistake nice as a sign of the things you listed.
My gf and I bought a pair of handcuffs last week and I have to say that they are much more fun than my PC.

Well, they were more or less right for the conditions they were testing in. In the atmosphere.
The libertarian's armor? The libertarian's are not the one's in power and thus it doesn't matter one bit what they stand up for.
If this ends those annoying Alltel commercials with the dumbass blonde "cool" guy and the dumbass pseudo geeky guys I am all for it!
I guess my Intel 3945abg wireless card is improper, unsupported, and/or cut-rate. Too bad it is in so many of the popular laptops...
