I really don't think that it's important that Hard Drives are at an all time low.
Would you still buy an older iPod from back in 2005? Or would you go for the newer iPod models?
It isn't because something is at an all time low that it makes it right to keep investing in it. Keep in mind that demand drives the market and that demand drives the advancement of said markets.
Technically, based on this article, I should go out and buy myself a walk-man, some parachute pants and a Hyundai Pony.
I personally think this is a great idea. Computers can only filter content to the best of an algorithm and frankly, standards are very poor on who codes what, how and how clean code is. Going human is definitely the way to go.
If anyone here has tried Google's Image Labeler you'd know what I mean. They pair you up with someone on the net, you tag images leaving out all the most popular links and when you both match one up, you get points and move on to the next one. This helps Google filter out results and add the most HUMANLY PERTINENT results.:) By pairing you up, they filter out the fact that someone is polluting the searches too, so it's really smart that way.
I really think this is a great way of getting more pertinence out of results and will benefit the overall greatness of our search engines. That, and Google has found a way to get the public to do what it's been hiring people to do for years already. Way to get people to work for free Google!:)
Being an Internet abuse consultant, I for one am VERY happy that they have limited to no Internet connectivity.
Awwwwwwwwwwww, what a shame, the biggest subnets that attack North American ISP/Hosts are having trouble? Good for them. Take your time fixing this one.
King Arthur: The swallow may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land? 1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Are you suggesting coconuts migrate? King Arthur: Not at all. They could be carried. 1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: What? A swallow carrying a coconut? King Arthur: It could grip it by the husk! 1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut. King Arthur: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here? 1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?
Sorry folks, it was too hard for me not to. Hehehehe!
Personally, I used to work in a video store when DVD hit the shelves. What did my bosses say, "Who is going to move to this? VHS is where it's at."
Were they wrong? I would definately re-affirm that yes, they were oh-so-wrong.
Anyone who believes that new formats aren't going to fly are crazy being as they haven't studied previous market trends, have they? I mean, everyone jumps on everything, DOA or not. It's more of a relevance issue. Will they be DOA? Maybe, will they sell and sell and sell? Yes.
How many people here believed the PSP movies wouldn't fly? Funny, now every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be buying in.
We're not talking Laser Disc here... we're talking mainstream media here people.
Picture Tube -> LCD -> Plasma...
Man, that said, and HD TV's becoming crazily affordable, why would an HD format be considered DOA?
It's surprising how demand for these are so high and production is so low. I mean, just yesterday we read about millions of iPhones coming for EARLY next year... but PS3, which has been anticipated is going to launch with a paltry number of units? Seems to me that Sony don't really care much about their customer base.
Well, not so much the base as the loyalty. Good bye Mr. Sony, hello Mr. Wii.
- "So, we've released the system, now, what's the network's status?"
- "Well, sir, it would seem we underestimated the download speeds..."
- "What? Are you saying the T1's aren't holding up?"
- "Uhhh no..."
- "So what about the OC-192 we ordered?"
- "It seems they're delaying the delivery - again - until next January..."
- "What kind of company would delay delivery on their product so many times?"
- "..."
- "Right."
"above and beyond the titles they'll have ready for the console launch."
If their titles' release dates follow the same typecast as their platforms release date, then 40 titles will probably be more like, 10 now, 20 in 6 months and another few over time.;)
Above and Beyond and Sony, lately, should never find themselves in the same article.
I recall when I was young and one of the gum ball machines was broken at the local convenience store... what did I do? I found a weakness and after 10 minutes of exploitation, was 100 gum balls richer!
Invent a service and you'll have exploits. Yin and yang.
Of course people will Phish with domains that are remotely similar to the bank names... then again, people are phisihing with crap domains that mean nothing, IE: smash my keyboard randomly and register it.
So really, in the end, who cares about this subject? It's irrelavent.
Wow!
Typically an American standpoint. It costs more than 500$ to sue someone in Canada, and frankly, there are way bigger fish to fry than some auto-dialer company.
Frankly, I'm not sure why this was even Slashdotted.:( What content is there in this that is even remotely interesting?
I use the libspf2 however, using it is quite useless when you come to think of it. In reality the concept is amazing, however, if you think of it, it relies on 3rd parties envolvement.
When you implement SPF, you check other users domain SPF records for validation purposes, however, what if the other users haven't specified their own records? Some reputable and large ISP's still do not have SPF setup. In reality, using SPF is great... as long as everyone else uses it. Having to rely on others when it comes to spam however, has proven to be futile on many occasions.
You know, I was just speaking about a similar issue to my friends... graphics in gaming.
I remember the good old days when story lines mattered. Now, it seems everything is OpenGL and fancy-pantsy. Like, sure your graphics are greaaaat. But if the story sucks, I drop the game quickly.
It's the same for OS. If an OS is hardcore graphics, they're just feeding into the "you need to upgrade" click. It's really crazy.
My 0.02$ anyway,
LiNUxG0d
I don't know why anyone would think OS installations will not matter. The facts remain that despite the platform differences, the old mighty dollar rules the world. I don't care if it's Windows or Linux or if it's running on an x86 or PowerPC... I do care how much it costs though. I mean, a Windows license will ALWAYS cost you a few bucks, whether you're VMware'ing or not... or else it's piracy right?
Let's think about this for a second: automotives.
Think of the automobiles as a platform (x86) and the OS is the drivetrain. Will there ever be 100% seperation from our great oil-based engines? Of course! Will there ever be full independance from that same engine, not really... dependance is driven by the masses and despite how good water-driven cars are for the environment, they aren't a replacement for those who drive for speed and leisure.
The application might become independant, but the choice will always be left to the consumer and the consumer is - realistically - so multi-faceted that there will be no mainstreaming. Sure we might see changes in trend, but never full independance.
I'm sorry man, if you think a Utopian Star Trekkie society will ever happen, you're dreaming in technicolor.;)

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody's around to hear it, does it make a sound?
It's never about picking the best system, it's about picking the one that sucks the least.
I think this is rubbish.

That's 4 million more than Sony have delivered so far!
Hmmm...
;) Who better than the Open Source community?
This must mean Windows CE has some flaws their developpers can't figure out.
It's just like everything else out there...

In todays world, you'd think some systems are better closed than open.
In the case of an election, hackers can't hack paper ballots or fiddle with code. Stick with what works in this case.
If you go exposing something this important to an electronic medium, realistically, you risk catastrophy.
