  4. This is the model... on German Parliament Considers Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is how a successful switch to Linux could be accomplished. It's hard for 3 people in an organisation of 100 people to switch to Linux and live comfortably. But if the entire government switches to Linux, there won't be any issues with doc/data compatibility. And their support network will find it much earier to support Linux if it's the only desktop/server platform. I hope this works out on this large of a scale. Maybe it really will get Microsoft's attention.

  6. They need oversight on EU May Fine Microsoft · · Score: 1

Just like in the US, it won't do a bit of good to just fine Microsoft no matter how much it is. $2.5billion is probably (in MS's opinion) a small price to pay to retain their monopoly. The key to keeping MS from abusing their monopoly is constant oversight by not just bureaucrats, but also people who are familiar with technological and financial aspects of the business. Otherwise, MS will just "pay the toll" and conitinue on their merry way.

I thought I DID pay for "content" when I pay my Internet connection bill. To put this in perspective, I do pay extra for HBO (gotta love the Sopranos :) but I don't pay "extra" for Discovery Channel or Animal Planet. The cost are already included in the bill. Maybe content providers need to team up with ISPs and work out some sort of payment scheme for "value added" content. I mean let's face it... If I could get HBO for free I probably wouldn't pay for it. But HBO's content is compelling enough that I AM willing to pay for it. This not only answers the "How do I make enough money to keep this site open" dilemna, it also keeps me from having to slow down my site with convulsion inducing, Think Geek adds.

I think the important point to remember here is that we are NOT sorry for the actions that brought about this situation. We are sorry that a Chinese pilot was killed (if he even WAS killed... I've got my own conspiracy theory about that). We are sorry that the US service men and women have been held HOSTAGE for over a week. But we are most definitely not sorry for gathering intelligence on a foreign nation. And that's what the Chinese actually want. An apology for "spying" on them and assurances that it won't happen again. I wish only the best for the service men and women being held hostage and for their families. I hope this situation can be resolved peacefully. But I don't think the Chinese government has any right to demand an apology for doing something that almost every modern government in the world does.

  19. Ubiquity on Is Mac OS X Threatening Linux? · · Score: 1

It may not be the best platform but Linux's "coming of age" has been due in large part to the ubiquity of the x86 processor. Many companies and schools and even a large number of families, have older PCs lying around and it's much easier IMHO to experiment with Linux. OSX, at least for now, is relegated to the Mac platform and Apple will probably have a more difficult time convincing Mac users to upgrade.I've been using the OSX public beta on a Beige G3 and while I'm mostly pleased with with the OS, performace leaves alot to be desired. So, while I think that OSX will probably go a long ways towards helping Apple gain new users, I don't think that Linux/x86 users will be jumping ship in large numbers any time soon.
