if i recall correctly, the ming dynasty was pretty friendly with some of the pirates, who were backing them against the manchus. And once the manchu dynasty came out on top, they moved everyone in from the coast to starve out the pirates.
About the too quiet bit, a guy who does some work
for my company owns a prius. And the damn thing is really quiet. He told me a story about almost
running some kid down in a parking lot, because the kid didn't hear anything so he just walked out
from behind something. It just goes to show how
adapted people are to cars.
i dunno, i've used futhur and found plenty of good
stuff, haven't seen anything copyrighted there yet.
But it's for trading whole jamband shows. which
people have been doing through the mail for years
with tape trees and with just ftp sites. This is
just adapting it to another medium. And uses all
the much hyped 'advantages' of p2p. It's been
growing consistently so far.
you can do that in gta3, you can drive an ambulance and pick up wounded people, drive the firetruck and put out fires.... it's not ALL horribly antisocial.
of course you can also steal a cop car and go vigilante
i don't have a good source for this, but when they first reported on the radio that it was an airbus a300 one of the people at the radio station said they thought there had been a number of recent crashes with them. fwiw
You'd have to find a really down on their luck nonprofit organization. A friend of mine works for one that does accept donated computers, but at this point I don't think they're even taking slow pentiums anymore.
There may well still be places who'll take them, but within a year or so...
there are still other problems with atm if i recall correctly.
the europeans wanted 32-byte cells so they wouldn't need echo cancelers because they'd keep the latency lower.
and the us wanted 64-byte because they already had the echo cancelers.
and the actual 48-byte size doesn't help either of them.
planet of the apes was alright.
but everyone needs to go and see
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
it comes out August 22nd

yep, just read isle of the dead last week.
i've been reading zelazny off and on for a few years now, and pretty much everything i've read has been great.
yep, every time i run that 5 minute long redlight at 4 am when there is no one else awake. I'm definitely running the risk of killing someone. I'm surprised I haven't killed hundreds.
>once you try debian, you don't wanna go back to >any other distro.
little jump in comments like this are worthless, but....
I tried debian, used it for 6 months or so, and then gave it the boot.
i have an agenda, and it definitely does has issues but they have been making tons of progress.
It doesn't take long at all to switch between applications, its just when you try starting a couple all at once, that it'll take a good couple seconds.
all in all, agenda has tons of potential, and i think it will do well, but i probably wouldn't want it to be release on a wide scale right now.
actually, altavista used to be good until a
friend of mine wrote a spamming script and gave it to hundreds of people, such that a search for anything on altavista turned up nothing but porn.
a couple of people already responded mentioning the fact that the vr3 has more memory and whatnot
than the palm. It also has a 66Mhz processor, while i believe the palm just has i think a 20Mhz or so.
So basically it's better hardware than a palm, hence it CAN be called a cheap pda for that price.
It's amazing how many people will just slam
enlightenment for being slow, especially when it
is completely false.
I tried just about every window manager around, and didn't find enlightenment to be significantly
slower than most. It definitely has more bells and whistles that you can turn on to make it slower though.
And i'm running it on a 200mhz pentium with 96 megs of ram, most of the people that complain about it seem to always have faster machines
OT: i was driving through there over the weekend,
going to bear swamp, i'm amazed anyone from the town owns a computer,
much less reads slashdot.

you can run enlightenment and kde, it works fine.

actually its been done for a little while. supposedly it did amazingly well in test screenings, and it'll be out on august 24th
i have the opposite problem, i have way too much memory right now, so i think i might start running gnome/kde now

side note: E was invented in, if i am remembering correctly, the 30's
nope, a recession is when you're out of a job and a depression is when i'm out of a job
except that they've been out of sync for several versions and that mandrake only WAS not IS a tweaked redhat

no one is continuously focused on work for the whole day. if you aren't going out for a smoke you're just doing something else
