Working for a community bank, I can tell you that sum is improbable. We are a good sized community bank for our respective market ($650MM in assets for Savannah, GA). We had a net profit of right at $6.6MM last year. Asking us to fork over $500M for a domain registration does NOT make sense. We would have to increase our fees, and we would lose customers, and then competition would be squashed. I know, I know, innovate or die; but there are still people out there that prefer the level of service a community bank can offer versus that of a regional, national, global bank. There are some great people at the larger banks, but also plenty of people who are looking to maximize fees (case in point, check out BB&T's annual report for 2006 and check out their fees on deposit accounts versus, say, Regions Bank).
I think it is a viable alternative. A lot of people lease equipment or vehicles. That way they pay for the service ythe good provides over time and don't have to come up with an inital down payment (which for OS's has been 100% of the price). If you gave someone the option to pay for Windows over 2 - 3 years and be able to upgrade to the latest version at the end of that contract and continue making payments, someone will jump at that. Not me, but someone will.
I believe current doctrine relies on a type of shaped charge ("bomb on a rope") that is fired from a special "gun" on a carrier vehicle over the minefield and is then detonated to create the breach./blockquote)
This is correct according to my old college room mate who is now a combat engineer in the U.S. Army.
I disagree with this. I work at a community bank in Georgia and often the only way we can help start ups is to get the SBA involved. Granted, there is a ton of paperwork involved and they generally like to see covenants in the loan agreement (liquidity, no change in ownership, debt to worth, etc.). The trade off is you get a much lower interest rate than most banks will give start ups and very favorable terms. As far as controlling the business, I haven't known any SBA clients that have made that statement. They will try to help you organize your business plan before coming to a bank for primary financing. In my (limited) experience I have seen the SBA 504 program do wonders for companies that normally would not qualify for financing.
Right on. The market is such a fickle thing. The important thing when investing is to do your homework and have discipline to stick to your investing strategy. Although I'm sure there are some day traders that are bailing out high and will get back after the price stabilizes. I think Google has intelligent leadership that can craft and follow an intelligent strategy, so no worries on the small price drop.
XBiz was able to locate information on the deal through a company called InternetRealEstate.com
I work for a bank here in the United States that offers traditional residential mortgages and commercial mortgages (warehouses and such). There is a ton of regulation that the government makes us comply with in regards to privacy, discrimination, etc. My question is this: Does anyone out there have any experience with government regulations in regards to the selling of internet 'real estate'? Is this simply an ICANN regulated issue? I don't know if the two areas are similar at all, just kind of curious this morning:)
I had the very same thing happen to me my freshman year at The Citadel. The Citadel is a military college in South Carolina known for having the toughest fourth class system. Essentially the four academic years are broken into classes (seniors are first class; juniors are second class, etc.). At any rate, the first day of your freshman year concludes with Hell Night. There's all sorts of physical training, yelling, and various challenges. Well the funny thing is I don't remember Hell Night at all. I recall one of the sergeants kicking in my door and telling us to get down to the quad (the courtyard in the barracks), but I don't remember a thing about that. Some of the upper classmen took pictures and I saw them later on. There was a picture of me doing push ups and I couldn't even recall doing any push ups that night. It was completely blocked out. I don't have any PTSD symptoms, it's just interesting what the human mind decides to store and what it deems does not need to stay.

The Jolly Green Giant, out of work vegetable spokesperson, was seen fleeing from some very surprised pigs at Farmer Johnson's farm. Farmer Johnson was quoted as saying, "Jolly sure do love them livestock" as he cleaned up the remains of his prize sow, Petunia. You may recall that such "farm love" is what got Jolly fired from his position as a spokesperson for canned and frozen vegetables. It seems he doesn't prefer vegatables, but rather the other white meat.
I couldn't agree more. It's this type of (inevitable) change that is going to make me start ripping all my media to my hard drive. I've held off on doing my movies because I have a feeling it will be kind of difficult. Begun the format wars have?
A shame, though. I was looking forward to the Rifts game. I don't own an N-Gage, but if the Rifts game became popular I might have purchased one. Without continued support for the platform I doubt I will invest, though.

I disagree. I just bought a Gamecube off of ebay bundled with Metroid Prime and Zelda Wind Waker. I'm actually getting excited about this after seeing regurgitations of the same style of gameplay w/ Sony and MS. The more I look at the prices of the PS3 and Xbox 360 and what I'll actually be getting for that sticker price, the more I am inclined to stick with my PS2, my Gamecube on the way, and my PC.
Maybe MS is making too much money and needs a way to show some losses to reduce their tax burden? At the same time they can canabalize (sp?) any technology AOL might have, within reason of course.

Because then they'd have to grow a mustache and drive a van and walk around in a robe all day.

At first glance I thought this was an article about the RIAA or MPAA, what with all the leeching going on...

That's more mean than inventive. A childish prank done by socialy underdeveloped adolescents.
