Google is in a littly hurry. The recent bull activity has made google's market cap close to 100bil$$$, but with only ~4bil$ sales (source: yahoo finance).
Google has some catch up to do. Slowly it IS accepting the corporate aggresiveness many thought to be strange thing for google. In the run, it had to embrace open source, the classified ad service & other avenues (of course, I appreciate the innovation & steps) which were not in the path of big players (read:MS). Ad service would a give a break to the normal users from ebay's near monopoly of bidding/classified business. Open source would hit MS & other commercial players. I believe Google would team up with (for now I think of) Sun's Openoffice to give a deep impact to MS, thus making an entry into software promotions as well.
MS is good at innovating names...some examples:
Windows...Word, Excel, Powerpoint.. Windows Media player, Internet Explorer
& then all the jiggetty-bigetty presentation they do..like Windows Tour
bottom line is IMHO they are all crap, but the package box, name, logos, marketing stuff i mean are/were good.
MS figured out that these DVDs functionality is unsupported on linux(in their linux test labs)...it was able to play again & again & again...a quick runnup of their statistics confirmed that this will make most people migrate towards linux. Eventually MS dropped the DVD.
theres another flip side to lay-off...
the hypocrisy!! all those 'we are better employers...we recognise talent...' and all that BS!!
You still stay on job, but whats the use? u wont get any recognition. atleast in my case, I worked my butt off & then when the dreadful time for promotions & raises came thru, our employer selected a sick pathetic guy, who didnt even work for 7hrs a day at a client-site(forget efficiency).
Dont tell I m jealous or something....A quick run thru well known employers will reveal similar cases. Yes, I have the freedom of getting out anytime I want but the laziness & personal stuff creeps in & this is what some need to conquer upon too.
Believe me./ geeks, its a pathetic experience to work everyday knowing the lousy guys get the ladder up, while u work at the lowest level possible.
This is where I feel layoff is better since u can start with the acceptance of hypocrisy in the next job....

Authors Guild sue google for showing their geo location on 'google maps' when u paste 31 E 28th St, 10th Floor New York, NY 10016-7923????? Isnt that privacy law infringement??? Isnt that showing a robber 'this is the address of Authors Guild...go rob 'em???'
..run IE under linux under root mode.. download certain auto diallers & certain keyloggers & test them...or should i run in winxp only? for innovativation!!!

Why not buy off the hacker/exploiter/worm writer commmunity with 100 mil & make Vista the reliable piece of system & play a monopoly game????!!
advantages:
1.need not negotiate OS license price with OEMs(DELL, HP etc)....
2.can name the price for normal end users...
3.can make special pacts (read: revenue sharing) with harware manufacturers for APIs/documentation
4.employ the above community to exploit linux & mac & bring their reputations down...
5.patent this whole process..so that noone else can use it against.....
