  1. This really does not bode well... on Scientists Find Brain Cells Linked to Choice · · Score: 1

I mean, it's great and all, learning about what's going on, but if we find out what parts of our brains deal with choice, couldn't someone eventually make a device that can suppress some parts of the choice mechanism, and it might just happen to fall into a corrupt government's hands?
If that happens, it would only be a matter of time before the government would have the devices installed into your brains at birth in order to "prevent new terrorists"...

Considering that Microsoft has generally made the XBox quite a bit about online play also furthers the distance from what's being said here.
Most parents don't want their younger kids doing things online without their supervision or at all, due to much media attention, so trying to make online play the main attraction of it (and making it cost money to do so) would seem to be leaning towards a more mature audience.

Not really. If anything, this could give Microsoft more ammo to tell the government Linux is wrong.
"China uses Linux, and China is oppressive, therefore, Linux is helping oppress people. That's why we should use Windows instead."
I'm not saying that Microsoft would directly say that, but I'm betting Microsoft will at least try to use this news to their advantage.

  7. The question is, how will the ads be done? on Google Wireless Patents Published · · Score: 1

Will Google Ads replace normal ads on a page if you're connecting with Google? That seems to be the only way I can really see Google making money off of this, and that seems to be slightly against their "Do No Evil" policy.
And I don't think they'll have users install a bar that shows ads at the top of their screens at all times. Remember services like NetZero? They didn't work, so how would Google manage working this?

Creative Commons shouldn't be any different in such an enforcement, even though it's meant to open up more rights than normal copyright.

  11. Re:How is this not YouTube / iTunes? on Finding the Long Tail of Television · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'd say the difference between streaming content and video podcasts is simple: Unavoidable ads versus avoidable ads. If you place a stream up, everyone watching the stream will have to wait for the ads instead of fastforwarding through them. With video podcasts, people can either fastfoward through the ads , and some people might just download the programs but never watch them, thus wasting the server's bandwidth since the person downloaded something they didn't really care about.
