I happen to work for a school district and do not think teachers should be able to bring Music CDs or anything of the like to school to use on district property. In fact, teachers are only allowed to use the computers as their union has negotiated. In our district, workstations are to be provided to teachers to take attendence, product curriculum materials and record grades. Playing music while students are reading silently isn't allowed. Playing solitare isn't either. I also think that if a teacher/government official/military employee was to put a virus/malware/sony rootkit or anything like that, that they should be held personally responsible and pay for the time it took to remove such harmful software. So yes, I stand by my first comment and would bet that if you were to check into the computer policies that employees just sign because it was put in front of them with a pen a lot more people would know there is a lot of stuff they are doing that is against the policy they signed.
On a side note, my district also has a part in the policy that if any person wins anything (online raffel, sweepstakes, even down to the soda cap codes) on district property, and the district finds out about it, the winnings belongs to the district, not the individual. This auctually happened too. A secretary won a new car online while using a district computer. She started bragging about it and telling everyone. Word got to the super intendent and guess what, the car was taken, sold and the money was put into the budget.
1) I wish people would learn how to backup files to CD/DVD/Thumbdrive/External Hard Drive...whatever. If you want to keep it and never lose it, then back it up.
2) How to use a restore disk or make one. All manufactures (HP, Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc) either include restore disks, have a partition on the hard drive to restore your computer or give you blank CDs/DVDs to create your own restore disks. DO THIS! Then when the computer breaks, save yourself some money and try to use the restore disk before paying to have your computer fixed (a.k.a. the computer tech using your restore disk).
3) Realize that you cannot physically break your computer unless you physically abuse it, pour water in it while its running, or something of the likes. If your software stops working, re-install it or look at #2; use a your restore disk and make sure you are following #1 and keep your important stuff backed up!
Then again, if people followed the above 'rules' then I wouldn't be able to make money off them. But they should still learn it!
Sounds to me like the executives don't want to wait for their peons to get on and off the elevator. And what happens when someone from a certain floor needs to go to another floor to drop something off. Last time I checked, the elevator doesn't know what floor each person wants until they get in the elevator. I think people are going to get pissed having to wait at the elevator door then auctually being in the elevator.
I could imagine looking up at the numbers above the elevator door and watch them go down to the floor where I am waiting 19, 18, 17, 16, 17, 18, 17, 16, 15 (my floor), 14, 13, 14, 13, 12, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 15 DING. That would piss me off way more than being in the elevator and going in one direction stopping at each floor to let on/drop off people.
You would think that Military or Government agencies wouldn't allow their employees to put CDs into their computers for security reasons alone. Its rather sad that anyone can bring in a random CD and pop it in. No wonder secure data is able to walk off of those "secure" computers so easily.
[Guard] - Please empty your purse please miss.
[Woman] - Nothing in there except for my personals and some music CDs.
[Guard] - Ok miss, you may pass.
[Woman] - {murmering under her breath} Sucker...now wheres those classified documents.
Ya, I drove through Oregan to Washington a couple years ago. It really bugged me having to let someone else pump my gas. Espically when it was around 10pm and I needed to fill up and had to drive almost 10 miles off I5 to find an open gas station. That was so freakin irritating having to drive into a town I didn't know.
I have several friends from the middle east. They are all disgusted how their own people are acting and are glad they don't live there. And what definition are they using for people that we need to be protected from. Certain names or racial backgrounds? Guess what, i am half italian and my dad is full italian. Does this mean we should be watch and not considered 'safe people' since the leader of Italy fought along side Nazi Germany? How about germans as a whole? Should we consider them all Nazi's? My biggest worry is the guy next door that seems nice, has a nice house, keeps to himself but drives a hundred miles away and molests children or rapes women. That is who I am afraid of. And just because his background and lack of criminal record says he is a nice guy doesn't make him a nice guy.
Why would google go for a DRM that exists and people already know how to hack. Perhaps Google's approach will be a little better than others. Maybe not. But when it comes to DRM, I think each company should be able to use or create any DRM they want. That makes it a little harder for hackers to break the DRM since there are so many different ones.
Are one of the guidelines that if Microsoft owns the company or adds it to the list of programs not to check in their spyware software, then its not spyware?
It appears that the Open Source community is growing. Do you all remember rule number one about the Open Source community? YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT THE OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY. Ok, fess up, who's been talking about the Open Source community? {Slowly pulls handgun out of pants and pulls back the hammer}
I totally agree with you. If I had a four or five gigabyte flash drive, I would put my OS on it and nothing else. When I see a cheap USB2 flash drive with that capacity, I might try it since you can boot to USB2 drives if your motherboard supports it (which mine does).

But considering that I only use this e-mail account for family, its quite amazing. I have another account for online purchases and other online stuff. I used to have an account that I quit using because of hundreds a day. I left it be for about 6 months and I had over 55,000 unread messages when I closed it. Good 'ol yahoo mail.

As soon as 2006 hit, my gmail account started getting spam. I have gotten 7 today alone. Argh.
Remember what DVD players used to cost. My first one was over $200. My latest one is a sony and has has progressive scan and optical audio out. I payed a whopping $45. They will price gouge you at first, but not $1800. I have seen the $600 price tag. That seems more realistic.
You know, for a product that Millions upon Millions use and that has hundreds of thousands trying their best to find holes in it to exploit, it does a pretty good job. But a lot of people are just M$ haters and no matter what happens, they will always hate M$. But does that mean that if you buy a car and it has a flaw in it, you no longer will buy that brand. Or furniture. If you get a bad mattress, or a chair that breaks, will you never buy from that store again or from the manufacturer? Linux people just like Apple people keep themselves in this little bubble where they think their stuff is supperior. Well guess what, it isn't. If it was, they would have much more of the market. Face it, you need to me quite computer savy to use Linux. You also need to either want to do very little to use a Mac or search and search to find software you want that does what you need it to do with a small sacrifice of features you can do without. Do I like Microsoft, no. Do I respect Microsoft, yes. And for being a multi-national corporation where some people do nothing but look for holes in Windows just to find them and point them out, you gotta admin, they have done a pretty damn good job. So you can stay with your Linux and sacrifice convience for arrogance and I will continue computing with ease and knowing that if I buy something (hardware of software) its going to work just fine.
Their servers scan your e-mails and send you links on the gmail site that relate to your interest and what you are viewing. Does this mean Google is malware too? Personally when I use iTunes, its kind of nice to see other artist that I may not know about but has a similar sound to the bands I do like. As long as Apple doesn't sell my information (Name, Address, E-mail) to other companies so they can e-mail me crap about artists then I don't care.
With work going full force on Windows Vista, you would have to understand that Microsoft has other things on its plate. Also, perhaps these issues are a little more difficult to fix.
I was going to make an air tight case to use 3M Fluorinert to submerge my machine in the coolant. But, I got too lazy and 3M Fluorinert is expensive to buy and if its not air tight, it will evaporate very quickly.
You can also use 100% pure Mineral Oil. Its non conductive and will work somewhat well. I am not sure of any long term negative effects.
Personally, I use watercooling through a closed system similar to a car's cooling system. The fans I use are low RPM and quite quiet. I would still love to try the 3M Fluorinert solution, but not with my main rig. Too much money in that one.
Its simply amazing that after being posted for a few minutes, mccain.senate.gov is now down. Hmmm...think we can take down www.microsoft.com if we all go there at exactly 4:00pm Pacific Standard Time and hit F5 20 times??
I have to agree. I work for a school district where I have complete access for every workstation as well as every server. True, I am a computer tech here, but still, the few things I do on a server shouldn't give me access to pretty much turning it into a FUBAR machine. Office staff and District Office personnel are even worse. They have full access to whatever they want on their machines. And all they do is use MS Office and a few programs for the district. Though it is kinda fun to search the server drives for *.mp3 and *.wmv and burn it to CD to enjoy at home. I have gotten some great music and really funny videos from their network folders, and then deleted them because its against district policy to have that stuff on work property =P.
Yes, I do know about raid5, but this is just my home computer and I am an enthusiast with a budget. If by chance all my hard drives with all my data backups were to fail, it wouldn't be life threatening, just annoying.
So i take it you didn't read that I said I haven't done it because I dont' want to kill my drive. And also, yes I do backup my data. I have two other hard drives in my system for backup purposes and an external I only use when I back up my data I really don't want to lose. And there are also my DVD backups of stuff like pictures that obviously can't be retaken and music that would just take way to long to have to re-rip. As for OS operation, i have seen very little slow down from the Raid0 config. The only slowdown i notice is the right click menus. Other than that, none. As for fragmentation, I leave my system on saturday nights and have it defrag once a month. Saturday is also my weekly backup so it works out. Sooooo, no i am not worried about data loss. I have only lost data once because I formatted the wrong drive, ya, it was a stupid mistake.
I just bought two 250gb Western Digital SATA2 drives four days ago. I saw this drive there but didn't know it had a window. that would be awesome. I always wanted to mod a HD and add a window, but never wanted to waste money. Oh well, i guess getting 500gb instead of 150gb for the same price was worth it. And my Striping Raid config is probably close to the same performace as the 10k drive. Maybe I should do some benchies.

Or, since they are Mac users they have no idea that you can get music for free let alone how to auctually download a filesharing program to get to it.

A little too late maybe? Keey trying Yahoo!, maybe one day you will come up with an original idea ahead of everyone else.
