You also missed in one of my previous comments when I said that with my own machine I have run without antivirus for up to a week before I got around to it. I also have done fresh WinXP installs and have had the internet hooked up (yes, DSL) before updates or anything was done. Just because the first thing some people do when they get their computer up and running is go download some pron and get a virus doesn't mean that if you plug in you will get a virus/spyware/malware/worm/anything within minutes.
I second that notion. I bought my Xbox about 2 years ago now and it was only $150 and came with three games. Its still fun and several games have come out that are enjoyable to play. Until the 360 drops to $150 or so, that money will stay in my pocket.
By recalling the CDs and sending out new ones without the DRM, does this remove the DRM from the machine or just leave it there. Or does the new CD remove the DRM when you play it? Same for the Sony Rootkit. By recalling the CDs, it sounds like they stopped the spread but didn't remove the auctual DRM software. If this has been answered before, I am sorry.
Auctually, my school district runs a minimum of Win2K and five sites are already at WinXP Pro. I personally run WinXP Pro on my desktop and WinXP Home on my Laptop. I just guess I am not scared to get a virus or anything because I am experienced enough in computers to take care of it quickly without losing anything. Other people either don't realize they have anything or don't know what anything means in the Process list from the Task Manager to see that something is running that shouldn't be. Anywho, its all a big hype. Run an antivirus for the big 'what if', and if you are so worried about someone trying to get to you directly then sell your computer and curl up in a ball and cry.
Then I have either been uber fortunate or something because in the 10years or so years I have been on the internet, I have only gotten one virus. I only run my antivirus and before the days of ghosting, I would reinstall from scratch. Sometimes leaving my antivirus off for up to a week. I do believe that the world has become paranoid through the media about viris and phishing. Yes, it does exist, but I truely don't believe it is as big as an issue that is being told. I am a Computer/Network Tech for a School District, which has about 17 school sites, 35 servers, over 6000 workstations and 25,000 users (this includes admins, teachers and students). Yes, we do get a lot of spam mail, but virus alerts for the district is very minimal. We are not bombarded with virus after virus and attacks from hackers. Its just like installing a stick of RAM into a computer. The cautious people that have static straps on, touch metal before touching the hardware and all this stuff seem to be the ones that fry computer components. I have never owned a static strap though I build custom computers out of my house. My computer case is never put together exposing my hardware, I work on the carpet; a computer no-no and I have yet to fry anything. I do keep backups of my pictures and of a few documents because of the 'what if', but I think the reason people are so paranoid is because they are afraid to lose everything. If I get a virus, I reghost my machine or reformat. If Joe Schmoe gets a virus, he freaks out because he has never backed up his quicken, his photos of his child's first three years of life are not backed up. Go buy a $60 CD Burner if you don't already have one. Burn the stuff you wanna keep and get on with life. A virus isn't gonna make your computer a giant paper weight or a boat anchor. And if you don't know how to do anything or even know what I mean by "ghost", go find a neighborhood geek and slip him $20 just for him to tell you to backup your 'must have' stuff.
Just turn on the computer, hook up the internet, update virus first. Reboot and run Windows Update. Thats it. Its not like someone is waiting for you to get home and get ya as soon as you connect. You usually have to be doing something to have issues (i.e. bittorrnet, kazaa, limewire, etc.) What do you think people do when the reformat for a fresh install. If you are uber paranoid, download the latest virus definitions from your antivirus' webpage in executable form on another computer and transfer it to your own system and run it manually.
Many people have done it over at www.overclockersclub.com. I almost did it to mine until I started cutting the acrylic and realized my dremmel skills were horrible. The key is making a dust free or as close to possible dust free environment. Everyone I have heard doing it used the bathroom trick. Get the shower running real hot and steam up the bathroom. turn off the water and let the steam go away. It will trap the dust in the air in the steam and drop it to the floor. Make sure you work fast and have everything cut and ready to do the work. Make the switch and you are done. People also do the work in plastic ziploc bags.
Wow, I too have purchased their products. I have their FPS2000 Digital 4.1 speakers circa 2000 and still love them. Their soundcards rock. The fact that they copied the interface from the ever famed iPod and decided that since Apple isn't smart enough to patent their interface, and now they will patent it. Its auctually quite smart. What about all those other patents for crap. Recently on slashdot, Microsoft went on a pointless patent attack. This one is smart and will probably end up in making Creative a lot of money.
So sad. It might auctually sell if...you know....it did more than the iPod video. True, its a computer too, but why spend so much when you can buy a MiniMac and an iPod video for less.
Auctually, I am a tech for a school district and have to install a wide varient of printers. By far one of the most annoying are the new All-in-One office jets. The install software is so demanding. You can't do anything unless it allows you too. And there is no stand-alone.inf file you can choose to install it manually. No, you have to go through the 30 minute install just to tell it you want to install a network printer and don't even think of trying to install it without all the crappy HP Director software and scan utilities, though they will never be used. Auctaully, I doubt they ever use it as a printer. As far as they care, its just a small copy machine that happens to fax too.
Yet another reason France is not one of my favorite places in the World. So, is it then illegal to run a Javascript applet off a webpage since it might do something useful and its free? Where is the line drawn? It is for commercial use (i.e. Firefox or Thunderbird or Openoffice)? Or for Mr. and Mrs. Schmoe who don't wanna buy an office suite for the one or two letters they type a month?
You guys auctually used to restart the whole machine. A simple logoff/login works too. Plus I never reboot. When it asks if I want to reboot now, I say no and keep going. I have rarely (like 1 in 100) had an issue.
I tried so hard to get into that show, but just couldn't. I saw it as corny just too out there. I do like Star Trek, but am not a devouted trekkie thinks everything else sucks, but that is just my opinion.
You all make good and valid points. I wasn't thinking of 3rd world countries. I was thinking of students in this country that can't afford a laptop. Never dawned on me.
Well, they are trying to integrate WiFi, Bluetooth and all this other stuff. Why? For $100 bucks, I wouldn't expect all the bells and whistles. A keyboard, trackpad (if not a trackball like the oldschool macs), screen, CDROM (not one of those new fandangled DVD-ROMS), and a USB port for thumbdrive access. And besides, $100 is a good price, but even $300 would be lower then most if not all other laptops.
Just last night I was called out to a business I free-lance for and pretty much redo their network because the owner's nephew downloaded Morpheus and a butt load of other crap onto one of the systems. Spent three hours out there redoing it all and removing the spyware and what not. Not to mention but the secretary kept closing the "Norton Antivirus has expired....." window and had no updated definitions. Oh well, easy $300 in my pocket. If Microsoft will offer the anti-virus free like their spyware software...I will use it for customers. I prefer ETrust Antivirus from Computer Associates.
I have two 14-plug power strips and about a foot gap between the back of my desk and my wall. I just let the poor little cables roam freely back there in their native environment. I also have a couple cabnits on each side of my desk to keep them contained. Loose wires love to get into open food in the kitchen. Sometimes I need to tie them up with a special tool called a zip-tie when they get a little wild. Just them of them as miniture, really long horses and coral them.
I auctually just watched a 2 hour show on The History Channel the other day about the Mini Ice Age that happened between the 1200-1800 time period. It was rather interesting. However, they could not explain the reason for the Mini Ice Age. Only speculate. Now, during that time period, how could a world with a dramatically smaller population during the pre-industrial revolution product enough polution in the air to cause global warming. It was a very good show, but if we are to go into another Mini Ice Age, I don't think we will be as devastated as the world was several centuries ago. Modern technology will prevail. We have cars with heaters, insulation for our houses. Just the fact that we have better/faster transportation is a huge thing. Traveling one mile takes a minute or less in a car instead of a half an hour on foot.

Would this also effect the weather?

In other news, Intel secretely used the rootkit Sony secretely deployed via their Audio CDs. It appears that all they did was rename the file.
Sorry for the ranting.

Ahhh..I tried to read the article, but it mysteriously was down. Guess it had been /.'d.

"Printer, what printer; thats our copy machine."

I wonder if Bill Gates will say that 256cubits of memory will be more than enough memory for everyone.
Hey, its still December 2nd over here in the USA. We still got 16 hours to call it tomorrow.
Does this mean the newest photoshopped images of Jessica Simpson will take more than one second to load??? DAMN YOU BELL SOUTH!!!!

Thats my 2
I don't trust anything that requires me to input credit card information to verify age. Should I really trust their servers with my credit card info?
