  1. Ignorant Eh... on Linux Snobs, The Real Barriers to Entry · · Score: 0
You know, the ball can swing the other way on ignorance too. All the linux diehards on /. all love to bash Microsoft up and down and up again, but the cold hard truth is that Windows is very successful. As for Mac users, I have spoken to a lot of Mac users in my school district (we used to buy only Macs, but went PC only about 3-4 years ago) and a lot of them say they like Windows much better. Others say they have a brand new Mac Mini or the new iMac at home and don't like it because it is different from what they used to have. And by that I mean they used to run an old Mac LC series with OS 7.5 or 8.0 on it. Just like a lot of Windows users, they live in ignorance of the true power of the OS in both Windows and Mac environments. When it comes to Linux, there is an emmerging young group of people that will try it and maybe even dual boot it, but people, being the creatures of habit we are, will continue to use Windows until it disappears; and that isn't happening soon.

Have I tried Linux...yes. I am actually waiting for Ubuntu 6.06 to release in hopes the hardware in both my desktop and laptop will work. For some reason, when I install the drivers for my video card, the re-compiling of the kernel likes to get rid of my wireless card from the network settings. When I get the card back in, guess what, no support for WEP encryption and my video drivers took a crap. And don't even try to get ATI drivers to work. From what I hear, thats a nightmare in itself. As for my wifi showing up again, I then have to use WPA...but oh ya, if you want WPA, you have to put it in the OS manually. Any new user to Linux would look at that and just say, oh crap, I formatted my hard drive for this. Then he/she would shudder, cry and put his/her WinXP CD in the drive and continue with Windows. Oh ya, and good luck with finding out how to install your video card drivers, re-enable your Wifi adapter and figure out what WPA is. I am very proficient with Windows and can pretty much do whatever it is I need to do at any time. So when these issues arose for me, I was able to find the answer though it took some digging to find them all.

People that buy the $400 desktop system from CompUSA will not know how to do this and will never do it.

I hear that. I used to love to play World of Warcraft all day on Saturdays and after work. But since my baby was born, I get to play when she doesn't need attention (for those of you who don't have kids, thats rarely ever). And when I do play, I can't do anything that takes a while to do because before you know it, she's crying and I need to put the laptop down. It really changes things.

I agree. I do play Guild Wars and its fun, but I also play World of Warcraft and there is absolutely no comparison other than a lot of people play it in real time. Thats it. Unlike WoW, Guild Wars has a story line and an ending. WoW on the other hand has no linear story (well, it kinda does, but the path taken isn't direct and is so broad, its hard to call it linear).

I probably should have made myself more clear. I did say that modding wasn't as popular in the beginning, but it never stopped. HalfLife mods are still being produced and steadily increased. It was because of games like HalfLife that mods are produced. It just happens that now, when HalfLife 2 is here now that modding is a very popular thing to do, so when it came out, many people started thinking about what they could do to the game before they even finished it. As for only a few mods for HalfLife2, there are a good number more than four. I have bookmarked over 20 that I am waiting for them to complete. They just don't get hosted on planethalflife.com, but post updates from time to time. Yes, HalfLife is a very modded game now, but it took time to get it to this point.

  5. The Difference...IMO on Half-Life Beats Half-Life 2 Over Time? · · Score: 2, Interesting
Half Life was a freaking awesome game. It set some really high levels of quality for games to come. Though for today's standards, the graphics are way behind and the AI is rather stupid, in its time, it was numero uno. It kept selling very well with addons such as Opposing Forces, Counter Strike and a few others. Half Life 2 however puts the modding capabilities into the hands of the common man. People are creating mods on their own that have rival the same gameplay as the original game, and they are just doing it for fun. For HalfLife 1, you could make maps and what not, but modding wasn't as popular is it is now. There are many more young people today that can program then there were back when Half Life 1 came out. Half Life 2 was very successful, but the mods for it I feel are going to become much more successful when they are completed.

Look at www.planethalflife.com once in a while. The majority of the mods listed on that site are for HalfLife 2 and look great. When all those mods get finished and people start playing them, there will be a revival of the HalfLife 2 game.
