  1. They kinda do on IT Certification Less Important Now? · · Score: 1

In a sense, they do hurt careers. I am fighting for a career in the tech field. I have no certifications, but I can do the job better than every certified person where I work. Does this mean that those who get certified aren't that good? No, not at all. But what it does mean is that employers need to stop looking for the capital letters at the end of your name before they will consider your resume. Though I wasn't alive before 1981, employers used to hire someone based on a high school diploma. Now, you have to have a degree, certification and experience. Well guess what, you can't get any experience if you can't get a job in the field. Employers used to train you to do the job you were hired to do. It was called being an aprentice. It still exists in some fields, but not many. So yes, certification does hurt people that can do the job but don't have those precious letters after their name.

I too have feared this from happening. I am a freelance graphic designer and what I produce doesn't really exist. Its all digital. I charge between $75/hr and $200/hr depending on the job and who it is and I haven't claimed any of it. Why, because I give nothing physical in return. Everything I do is electronic. Same is with this virtual money. I can 'farm' 5000 gold in World of Warcraft and sell that for $300 in real money. What exactly did I sell. I made money, but didn't produce anything. I consider what I did a service and last time I checked, doing a service where nothing is produced physically isn't taxable.

I used to work at CompUSA and always had the most sales in equipment and service plans. Why, because I know the hardware and what it does. I explained it in lamens terms so everyone could understand it. I did not lie, though I did use the point that if you use Emachines warranty, you need to pay shipping. I loved that one. But I did rely on the fact that CompUSA was local and you could bring it to us. CompUSA salesmen are trained to attack customers. Not let them hang out and look for you. CompUSA salesmen make commission. I think Circuit City and Fry's people do too. BestBuy though does not which is why they got crappy service. Plus, BestBuy just blows. I was shocked to hear that the CompUSA salesman didn't offer the service. Must of been a n00b. Anywho, the results weren't too shocking, and yes, the rarity of finding a knowledable salesman is slim. Most of them have no clue about what they are selling.

You know, there is no comparison between listening to a song in your car, whether you bought it or downloaded it and auctually going to a live concert. The experience is what you pay for. Artists today think they are worth the $250 ticket and there are people stupid enough to pay it. It just like the movie theatre. When I moved to the town where I am at, the price of a movie ticket was $6.50 and $5.50 if you had your student ID with you). Now, its $10.00 and $9.50 if you have a student ID. One of the reasons I feel this is happening is the advancement in technology for movies. Movies aren't shot on a set anymore or out on location, they are shot in front of a green screen and have all the effects put in digitally. That is expensive and in order to make up that cost, they hike up the cost of the movie to the theatres and in turn the theatres rape us for money. Same with music. The fact that an audio CD still cost less than $20 is surprising to me. Whats even more disgusting is that anyone that can produce a CD somehow becomes very wealthy, and if you are a barely talented rapper that can string words together that sound catchy and rhyme to a certain extent, you are in the millions.

I agree. I subscribe to the Dish Network Top 120 channels just so I could get TechTV. Now, I have no use for the Top120 since G4 took over. Its crap. Attack of the Show has its moments, but rarely. I do like that Star Trek: TNG is on there because it reduces the number of times I have to see The Man Show, or Street Fury or any other crappy show on that channel. Its sad, and yes, I miss Leo and Patrick too. Everything they talked about I already know, but it was nice to see a show that helped people and even refreshed my mind once in a while. XPlay is getting crappy too. Too many freaking skits and not enough reviews. I did however see the show Call for Help with Leo Laport on there about a month ago at like 5:30 am (my baby woke me up) and was happy. Not sure if it was a repeat or not, but he was on. But yes, as soon as my contract ends, I will be removing the Top 120 and going to the Top 60 since TechTV was my only reason for getting the Top 120.

Auctually, you can go to mom and pop shops and get custom built laptops. My father in law did and its a rather nice laptop. But as for companies, theres Toshiba, IBM, Sony, HP, Compaq, Gateway, Acer, Panasonic, and so on and so on. You don't need to buy a Dell just because you need a laptop. And with the exceptoin of Sony and Toshiba, those other manufactures sell AMD chips in them. I used to work at CompUSA and all I sold were AMD machines. Do I hate Intel, no, but AMD machines offered the same performance with a smaller price tag. And not one customer ever came back complaining about their machine (unless the LCD display died or something like that).

Oh ya, I am well aware of the other products both companies make. I once opened up a walkman or something alone those lines from the late 80s and it had the AMD logo on a few of the chips in there. But lately, whenever an article speaks about Intel or AMD, its ususally talking about the CPU war between them. I guess when you take into account all the other products they make, its somewhat of an unfair comparison because if an article refers to their CPUs only, and then refers to market share but takes into consideration the company as a whole and their entire array of chips, I would say the results are skewed. They should look at CPU sales if they are talking about the CPUs from the two companies. Either that or I am just blowing hot air out my @$$.

They also fear online piracy, which the music industry partly blames for its lackluster sales."

Perhaps that what the music industry calls music is just crap that no one wants to buy. My car radio doesn't turn on much anymore because everything I hear sounds the same and isn't that good. When it comes to Rap/Hiphop stations, its all about screwing a bunch of different girls, cheating on your significant other or just about sex in general. The rock stations talk about something sappy, their crappy youth years or something off the wall and has no meaning, just a fun song. Country...ya, don't get me started there. I get angry just hearing country from a distance. And yes, I really do mean angry. Jazz, not my cup of tea, but I can listen to it. My wife likes jazz and I guess you can say I've grown tolerable of it. Classic rock is just getting repetitive. I mean, its classic and all, but I am sure there is a lot of other music from those bands that hasn't been ground into us from those bands. Come on people, play some different songs.

I am sure piracy has a bit to do with the lackluster music purchases, but not as much as they let on. I for one know exactly how to go out and download music illegally. Do I? No. I am too lazy. I hate getting a song that doesn't work, or is mis-titled or is hard to find. I just listen to the radio, you know, that free music that is broadcast for everyone to hear.

As for porn. Just watch TV, you get enough softcore porn out of it. Or go to Google Images and search for boobs or naked or something generic and you will get enough pictures to satisfy the normal person. If you are not normal, then I am sure you know plenty of free porn sites.

When my child (and future children) get old enough, the gaming will probably quit completely, or as you do, play late at night when they are in bed so I am not setting the example of 'I can do it, but you can't'. Either way, gaming is going bye bye and I will miss it. But there are more important things in life other than gaming, a lot of things.
