The average Joe wants his computer to just work, and while Linux is getting better all the time Windows is still leaps and bounds ahead in many areas. I'm running Fedora Core with Gnome at home (cue "my distro is better" statements).
So the correct answer isn't to switch to Linux it is switch to Macintosh and OSX.
To continue the thought here.. many stores here advertise a cash price. So if pay by credit, they tell you that there is that surcharge.
Actually according to their merchant agreements with the credit card companies, merchants are not allowed to charge a surcharge for using a credit card. They can however, give you a discount for using cash, as seen at many gas stations.
Just wording of course, but an important difference to the card issuers.
I went to the Apple student page and built the same machine, that is how I got the cost. Anyone can use the discount in that there is no proof required that you are a student or are purchasing for a student. Is that wrong? Maybe. Is finding a Dell coupon on FatWallet meant for certain people the same?
I certainly agree that Apple costs more, but, 2-3 times is just inaccurate for the most part.
MagSafe is a magnetic power supply plug, so if you trip over the wire on your plugged in laptop the cord will easily pull out of the computer instead of the computer taking a trip to the floor.
The Sudden Motion Sensor locks the hard drive heads when it senses you have dropped your laptop to prevent damage to the hard drive, the technology is also being used by hackers to do some cool tricks.
And if you are going to go the coupon route I will go the Apple Student Discount route, since anyone can get that. Bring the cost of the Mac to 2128.00 and right now you can get a free iPod Nano worth 179.00.
Makes you wonder if Dell just inflates their prices to make you think you are getting a good deal since their coupons are so readily available.
Does the Dell come with built-in bluetooth? Is the Dell's wireless built-in? It says it is a mini card in your description. Does the Dell have an ExpressCard slot? An illuminated keyboard? Scrolling trackpad? Built-in web cam? Magsafe power supply? (Trivial, but still a feature.) Sudden motion sensor?
Quite a few things I don't think Dell has, I've seen some scrolling trackpads on HP's and such but they don't compare to the Apple version, i.e. one strip along the right and bottom for scrolling.
And of course at the end of the day, Dude you got a Dell!
Show me where an Apple computer costs 2-3 times more than a Dell, or HP with similar specs not a 399 Celeron special from Best Buy with 250 dollars off for suscribing to AOL. This myth has been disproven many, many times so try to come up with a new reason to hate Macs.
Exactly, why would he lie. So I will assume he has never seen a Walmart. I had not seen a Steinmart until earlier this month when one opened near my home even though I had to sit through endless commercials for the store on cable television. Same for Sonic drive ins I always see commercials for it but I have never heard of one in this area, man I wish they had those around here the food looks good.
You've never seen a Walmart? Come on, there are Walmarts all over. Either you've lived a really sheltered existence (I'm pretty sure you can see a Walmart driving west on the masspike) or you're lying. Which is it? And there are lots of Walmarts around Boston. Walmarts in the greater Boston area
You won't find a Walmart in NYC either, this is a union town and we won't let em set up shop. I have, however, seen a Walmart on out Long Island. So if this poster doesn't leave Boston, us big city folk don't have much reason to leave the city much, then I could see how he/she has never seen a Walmart.
It is a WHITE computer, not beige, not black, makes you wonder though, were computers made beige so people wouldn't notice the sweaty yellow stains or smokey yellow stains. Anyways I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it gets my iBook as pure as the driven snow again.
For good or for ill, the RIAA has come to stand for the music cartel in many people's minds. Call it the flexibility of language or the laziness of human mind, but when someone says RIAA, I don't just think of the lobbying organization, I think of the cartel.
I commend you for fighting for precision, but in this case I think you're trying to piss into the wind.
The music labels want people to think of the RIAA when they hear bad things about the music industry, it is a lot easier to boycott Sony or Warner then it is to boycott the RIAA, that name doesn't appear on CD covers does it?
.wma not locked down as much as.aac? I can't even play a.wma file on my Mac anymore because MS doesn't make an updated version of WMP for OSX. (I'd call needing to spring for a whole new OS locked down) Also, I don't believe.aac is locked down. My CD rips in iTunes are transferrable to any computer for playing. Now Fairplay, which is applied to.aac formatted files do lock down those files, however, I can burn as many CD's as I want with those Fairplay protected files.
But Comcast and Covad are paying for their upstream connections to AT&T. Do you think Comcast and Covad connect to the Internet for free? Everybody who connects pays their upstream provider. It's not like either Comcast or Covad are one of the big backbone providers.
So where does it end, who does not have an upstream connection that needs to be paid for?
To all the folks complaining about this being in YRO, what section/sections would you consider proper for this topic? Games? Politics? It seems to fit best here for me at least even if it is not technically about "rights". Do we really have rights online anyway or do our ISPs TOS come first. Or is the section really meant to be Your Rights (Discussed) Online?
108-20 37th ave just means that it's on 37th ave near 108th st. corona is mostly 2 or 3-family units.
What did you write that is different then how I wrote that address. And I was thinking of the area near Lefrak City, it could be up north more but I'm not to familar with Corona as I like my hubcaps attached to my car.
Well a few members of my gaming clan that moved to BF2 before me claimed that the game wouldn't install on 2K, maybe there is a work around but apparently a normal install will detect Win2k and not allow it to continue.
That address is in Queens, NYC it would properly be written as 108-20 37th Avenue Corona, NY. If it is a real address I wold imagine it is a large apartment building.
Maybe it's time for these people to upgrade or buy a new machine.
Exactly, I ran Win2k until February of this year because I liked it, however, I wanted to play a game called Battlefield 2, in order to install the game required that I be running WinXP. I wanted to play this game so I "upgraded" to WinXP when it was on sale. I could have continued playing Battlefield 1942 but I wanted the new graphics and technologies available in the newer game. If a user wants to run a new version of Firefox they should upgrade, otherwise they can be content with an older version without as many new fancy elements.
a better analogy would be sony selling cds and dvds that only play on sony hardware.
A Playstation 2 game is a DVD that only runs on the Playstation 2. And for a good majority of PS2 "games" I have seen the content is mostly a movie, granted it is a game engine rendered movie, but a movie nonetheless.
Well given my recent troubles to decrypt an EMI copy protected CD i'm not sure where to go for music that I can listen to in the manner I choose.
Seriously I use to pirate alot of music then I decided one day that it wasn't right and I should pay for the music I listen to. So I went out and purchased a couple of new CD's and I get rewarded with CD's that don't play in some CD players or as with the case with the last CD I bought, cannot play it on my computer or store the music on my computer. I can run the Macromedia player thing that comes with it but that it turns out is just playing.wma files hidden in a second session on the cd. It was one hell of a lot easier to simply download the music, why do I feel punished for trying to do the 'right' thing.
The shift key didn't work? I haven't met a DRM'ed CD yet that could stand up to the dreaded shift key (of course I have Autoplay turned off anyway) and if I ever do I have OSX on an iBook to rip it with.
Actually the commentor should have told us what the intials stood for and then used the acronym whenever it appeared after the orignal use. But what can you expect from Slashdot posters these days. Bad grammar, what's next bad jokes?!?
How is the wallet "strange"? I also don't think the belt is a bad item either. I could see a hipster chick wearing the belt or having the wallet.

Of course no one in NYC actually carries their groceries home, we have delivery for that.
Lightnin' can move down strings yo.

OK, a few questions:
Does the Dell come with built-in bluetooth?
Is the Dell's wireless built-in? It says it is a mini card in your description.
Does the Dell have an ExpressCard slot?
An illuminated keyboard?

I though all of us Mac users drove the New Bug because it matched our iPods so well.
Don't forget he gets no spam.

I think he is funny on TWIT, he is always getting things wrong it cracks me up.
