  1. What types?? on Bent Fibers Put Networks At Risk · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article states that 4 different types of fiber were tested, but doesn't state what those types are, or related too. There are different materials fiber optic cabling can be made out of, as well as different diameters. Were they talking about different diameters, or the materials?

This was obviously written for a somewhat technical audience, given the subject matter and source that published it. By omitting the facts of which 4 types they tested, it really doesn't do justice to the subject. For all we know, they tested low end cabling made from plastics.

Part of recycling is re-use of items. To re-use an item doesn't mean you have to break it down to its base componants and remake it. You obviously have never tinkered with electronics. There is a huge market for this stuff.... remember, these items are usually being tested. If not, they are worth less.

Go to any hamfest or electronics surplus store... used parts fly off the shelves every day.

  6. Actually... already happening on Japan's War On E-Waste · · Score: 4, Informative

Actually, a lot of junkyard/recycler places in the US are starting to figure out they can make big bucks on recycling almost all of the parts from computers and other electronics. It used to be they would extract all of the metals and plastics, which would net them a few cents a unit. Now they can get a few bucks a unit by pulling chips and reselling them on the refurb market.

They just had a show about junkyards (I think it was Modern Marvels on the History Channel) which talked about this.

Recycling is actually big money in the US. Most people think we send vast quantities of junk to be dumped overseas, but in actuality a lot of that junk is scrap metal that is sent there to be recycled.

I took an English Comp class as an online course, and the experience has led me to never want to take another online course again.

The first class everyone was required to show up to an actual classroom for introduction, etc. The prof handed out the assignments for the entire semester, with instructions on how to log on and upload the assignments. I did all the assigned work up until the mid term, but I never got any of my work corrected and returned until the day before the midterm. Her excuse was "sorry my home computer has been acting up and I've been busy getting my Masters". Having no feedback was utterly useless. I could have just bought the book and studied on my own. Heck, that's basically what I did [1]. After taking the midterm, and never getting feedback from that, I quit making any effort.

Since English Comp is mostly writing, I thought it would be one thing that would work best as an online class. Obviously the instructor was at fault, but it is a common problem a lot of people face.
