  1. I still don't get it...... on KOffice 1.5 Released · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I love KDE on my OpenSuse box, but.......

KOffice is nice, yes, but it's only KDE (or Mac OS).

OpenOffice is nice, yes, it's multiplatform.

OpenFormats are nice, yes, they are everywhere (or at least could be).

Therefore, even a dumbass can figure out they want OpenOffice rather than KOffice. I wish they would merge (or could merge), and wipe MS Office off the face of the planet.

Until then, we're stuck with two very talented development teams struggling for market share with very similar packages working against eachother rather than building a SuperOffice package together.

Ah, the benefits of OSS, FOSS and Linux!

  3. Time limits are the issue here I think? on Netflix Suing Blockbuster for Patent Infringement · · Score: 4, Insightful

Well, at the time, NetFlix was new and innovative with their business model. Therefore, the patents were reasonable at the time. Just because something seems obvious now doesn't mean that it has always been obvious.

IMHO, a time limit is needed for business model patents. I won't argue here how long they should be valid, just that they should have a reasonable expiration date. That way, the innovative company can cash in on their research and development for the time limit of their patent while still allowing competition in the market.

Naturally, companies (and I assume politicians as well) won't like the idea of time limited business model patents but I think that is what would be best for the consumer.

I mean seriously, is the human eye capable of noticing a few more frames per second. I am almost certain that your keyboard, mouse and joystick cannot be overclocked. Therefore, if your input is limited by your input device speeds, does it make sense to increase your memory performance by 10% if it will burn out 50% sooner than if it were not overclocked?

No, this is not sarcasm, I really don't know the answers and am genuinely curious.

If you're looking at segregation by physical location, forget it. Because then you would immediately say goodbye to a whole lot of porn, online gambling, online shopping, and so on. Um...maybe not support, but a little tolerance might help. IMHO, the root of many social problems is the inability of many people to tolerate others.

That is why, just for example, some cultures literally hate Americans. They view us as arrogant and imperialistic. And I have to admit, as an American myself, not all of them are off the mark. Americans tend to believe that their way is the right way. There is not always necessarily a right or wrong when dealing with culture.

For example, some cultures practice (or used to practice) cannibalism. To me that seems utterly barbaric and sickening. But to them, it was a deeply religious practice. If I had grown up in New Guinea 50 years ago I probably would have thought burying your loved ones without sampling their flesh would have been unthinkable. Does that make them right or wrong?

Depends on your point of view I guess.

Rather than push out a product that is simply not ready they decided to get their shit together and wait until they're convinced the products are good enough for the market. That is very atypical M$ for sure.

Of course the products may still not be what consumers are expecting even if they do wait. This is a very big rollout for the M$ crowd. They need to get this right or face even more market share loss to other OS's. They will probably continue to lose popularity anyway but overall, IMHO, I think it's a good move.

Some online real estate deals are, for the most part, safe.

For example, wilderness purchases if you should have the inclination to build a getaway cabin. Granted, there are no structures most of the time, it's just the land.

Another example would be buying fringe properties. If you believe that a company or a city will eventually want to expand into a particular area, you might want to buy the land if you have the chance to get in early enough. You would have to look out for potential immenent domain problems though. A friend of mine inherited basically a huge field when his parents died in a small town in central Arizona. About 3 years ago, some company wanted to build a retirement village with a golf course. They paid him 7 Million for a stupid field. Sweet!

Other potential online purchases would be castles. Yes, that's right, castles. There are dozens and dozens of mansions and castles that sit in what was formerly East Germany. The original owners have simply abandoned them and the local authorities auction off the properties. Many times they go relatively cheap, like a couple thousand dollars cheap, if you don't mind the renovation costs. They can make great vacation spots or quiet retirement villas.

  18. Bonding and button mashing on Adult Gamers and Their Ulterior Motives for Gaming · · Score: 3, Interesting

I play video games with my son all the time. I think it really helps me to stay involved in his life because of the conversations we have. We tend to talk a lot during play, not just smack, and I can usually keep in touch with what is going on in school, with his friends, trends amongst the teens, etc...

The only problem that I have is that, IMHO, most 20somethings and younger are button mashers and not actually skilled gamers. They like to think that they're good at games but, again IMHO, not really. They totally lack creativity, strategy and tactics.

For example, we usually play the football titles. When a new version comes out he'll spend a day or two experimenting with the offense until he finds a handfull of pass plays that he can use every time regardless of what defense is called. He'll practice only those plays until he gets the timing down just right so that no matter what you do his receiver will catch the ball 99% of the time. For the most part, he will totally disregard the running game because, at least I think, he can't time a pattern like you can with pass plays.

Whether that's a problem with the game or not can be debated. However, it just gets boring when it's the same thing over and over. Rather than try having fun with different alignments, different receivers, running the ball, or whatever, his one and only concern is winning even though, I believe, he sacrifices his pride with timing rather than actually becoming good as something.

If a game is violent, promotes gun use, promotes crime, grafitti, prostitution, gangs, etc..., etc...

    SO F'ING WHAT!

If you don't want your kids to be affected by those types of influences, then do your job as a parent and monitor them! Simple!

Living in a free society, or relatively free, means that you have the right of choice. If you don't want your kids to learn violence, then sell your TV, don't buy newspapers or magazines, turn to home schooling, don't turn on the radio, and by no means allow them to go out in public. If you don't like something, don't buy it. If you don't want to display violence in your home, change the channel on the TV. If you don't like a song, change the station on the radio.

Um, wait, or maybe you could just teach them responsibility and citizenship. Yeah, that's a thought. Why didn't anyone think of that before.
