Thats the typical "industrial waste" strawman argument... Perfect example of course is the fact that dihydrogen monoxide is also a common industrial waste.
I'm pretty sure that would be retail price of the material they allegedly pirated.
At $250k a pop, they would only need to pirate 26 things to hit that mark otherwise. Given they are "from nine states, Australia and Barbados", that seems a pretty small figure.
But AC backed up their argument with a reason for their statement. When people just say "It is because my interpretation of <insert religious source here> says so", there is little room left for debate.
Yes, people have differing opinions. That does not mean that all opinions are equal.
Hypothetical moral stance: Removing a persons tonsils or appendix is unconscionable and effectively murder, as all cells have a right to live. Is my view here of equal weight to your view (I assume), that removal of these organs should be allowed?
What is wrong with the AC posters definition of a person? What do you feel makes it a "person", rather than a "potential person"? For an opinion to be considered, it *must* be debatable.
All of the reasons I have heard either run along the DNA lines that AC alluded to, or refer to a "soul". The problem with the DNA argument is that my hypothetical moral stance above is just as valid under the DNA argument: every cell in a human body is a "potential human". The problem with the "soul" argument, is that identical twins would share a soul!
In fact, e-mail is horrid for many situations. Think about a harrasment situation.
I agree completely. I find it so much more satisfying to harass co-workers to their faces, and preferably in front of an audience. You just don't get the same reaction through email.
It makes lots of sense to compare them. You don't want a situation in which a rogue company can perform an effective denial of service attack against the authorities by misbehaving on a larger scale. By ensuring the guilty party pays to clean up the mess, you allow the authorities to scale their response.
"Sorry, we can't actually take action against DirecTV, because we just blew this years budget answering the damn telephones."
Sure, it is hardly a small fine, but it only works out to abou $3 per complaint. That is not much money. I imagine it would cost considerably more than that to handle each complaint (IANAA, so I don't know what's involved, but it seems quite plausible)
I don't think you're going to get too many lawer mice out of this. To do that, you need to remove some of the original brain material, and substitute in some shark brain cells.
If people liked watching commercials, then DVDs would include them also.
Sadly, a trend I have noticed recently is adverts at the start of DVDs that can't be skipped. I wonder if the studio's realise this kind of thing encourages people to get their entertainment through more flexible channels?
I think a lot of people are going to misunderstand your extremely important point because you're trying to offer a possible explanation for the drop on the charts, rather than explaining why their original assumption about causality is not necessarily correct.
There are two relevant points here:
1. Correlation does not imply cause; and
2. Anecdotal data does not evidence correlation.
This should prevent lots of people from making the same mistake as me, and clicking the wrong site in their google search for "gspot" while at work:|. It's a mine-field out there!
Walking down the street with a NES controller strapped to your belt: Yep, that's gonna be a good look... Why is it I can't picture anyone but Steve Irkle doing this?

well a floride coating is what natrually protects our teeth, thats why tap water, and toothpaste have this as an additive.
Oh, so the government tells us! You clearly either work for the government, or get far too much Fluoride.
But we all know the chances of it being released are about as good as Duke Nukem Forever ever being released...
But does it run... oh, never mind.
And that's worse than the current standard of the average blog?

But seriously, there's not much you can't do it a web browser in a pinch.
Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried any of these links in IE
I pity the poor deaf slashdotters... Oh, and those of us who cannot download mp3s at work.
Depends - what did the judge have to say about it?
The slashdot community isn't some kind of hive mind; generally, people have different opinions.
;).
You must be new here

... on one of those little mouse treadmills?
Can I ask how tall you are? Perhaps you just classify as a "small mammal"? Try putting on weight, and see if you still have a problem. :)
Why do so many slashdot moderators hate the Uranus jokes? I personally reckon their just Uranus retentive...
If you can't find a USB stick, then you can always get one of these, although the music selection is a little bit limited...

It's ridiculous to make that statement without even trying to reconcile it with Microsoft's actions at the UN which we're discussing here.
I wasn't discussing the what Microsoft did. I was discussing the assertion made in the OP, that Microsoft cannot compete with OSS.
