  1. Re:What's a lost dragon called? on Dragons, Nuclear Weapons, and Game of Thrones (thebulletin.org) · · Score: 4, Interesting

I really hate that White Walker dragon. Dragons are somewhat magical, but they are real physical animals. To breathe fire they must have some organ that produces flammable liquid/gas. Does the White Walker dragon eat in order to make this substance? It doesn't just appear out of nowhere. And why is it blue instead of red? Blue is a hotter flame than red. Nuclear explosions don't change colors just because the bad guy gets them.

And the dragon doesn't need to breathe fire in order to be the most devastating weapon the Night King could ever have. Instead of moving at the shambling pace of his undead army, he can fly right around the armies of Westeros coming to fight him and make a new army wherever he goes. There's been a raging war all over the country so there's corpses everywhere, but any graveyard will do (including the one inside Winterfell). He can fly anywhere, drop off a White Walker and seed a new army that will grow larger than any force available to fight it before they can find out where it is and march there to fight. And he'll be off somewhere else doing the same thing again long before you find out where he was. Only another dragon can catch him, but the White Walkers are seemingly immune to fire (unlike the wights) so the living dragons can't hurt him but he can hurt them. Even if the living dragons can hurt him and his dragon, very risky going after him since you can't bring reinforcements with you but he can raise support wherever he goes.

Delaying the need for going to nursing home and taking some of the strain off from the caregivers would certainly help. But we aren't that far in with the disease with my mom and at this point getting her to cooperate with that for an hour a day every day would not be remotely possible.

You would think so, but if there's some asshat singing over the top of that music somewhere they claim that your use of the song infringes on their use and unless you are willing to sue them they win, even though it's their use of the music that is against the terms. And it's dealing with that crap that has caused some people who used to allow royalty free use of their music to stop doing so because it became too much of a hassle. The only safe bet is to use music straight from the YouTube music library which is very limited.

  8. Worst Doctor Who in ages on Doctor Who Won't Return Until 2020 (bbc.co.uk) · · Score: 4, Insightful

Most people complaining about this season say it's bad because of the SJW themes. That's not why it's bad. It's bad because the writing, directing, and acting are terrible. The writers have no imagination. The Doctor has no edge. When she has an important bit of dialog the camera is probably going to be at some weird angle so the focus isn't even on her. Two out of three of the companions are just there. Graham could be a good counterpoint if there was ever a point to counter.

There's been plenty of "meh" Doctor Who episodes over the years. I watch because you never know when they are going to pull a "The Girl in the Fireplace" or "Blink" or "Heaven Sent" out of their hats. But even when it's been "meh" it's at least had personality.

Typically the camera is always recording to its buffer. When it starts recording to file it includes what was in the buffer. So you get some time from before you actually start the recording. There have been cases where cops were caught planting evidence because they didn't know that and recorded themselves doing it even though they had turned off the recording.

I agree with you on preferring The Last Jedi over The Force Awakens. As far as light speed through the shields thing goes, it can be fanwanked into making some kind of sense. It only works if [technobabble]. If you can fanwank a measure of distance into a measure of time you can do that. I don't watch a Star Wars movie to worry about its adherence to the laws of physics or consistency in weaponry. Kamikaze attacks are the weapon of a group that has already lost but refuses to surrender. Rose stops Finn from doing another one because attacks that weaken your own side as much as it weakens the other side only at best prolong the inevitable defeat. It's as useful as Poe's attack earlier. The real resistance was Luke and Rey and passing the knowledge of the Force onto another generation, and their postponing the defeat only served to cost them Luke. Kamikaze attacks don't particularly make sense in a world with droids and auto pilot, but I can set that aside. I'd rather be thinking about things like that than obsessing over physics, and the movie did manage to get me thinking about that.

The NES has a cartridge system that is fiddly to get working as it ages and its graphics output is limited to coax or composite, both of which look terrible on a modern flatscreen tv. If you still have your NES, it's kind of useless. The Playstation has discs that still work and s-video output which is good enough for the level of graphics that it has. This is to say nothing of the fact that the only reason the discs can't be played in the current generation console is because Sony decided not to do this. It's just a me too money grab.

I guess if you had data on a large enough group of people you could find people who are close enough matches to fool the system to yourself or other members of your group.

Player uniforms could be designed with a mark on them for the top and bottom of the strike zone, similar to the way motion capture is done. The automatic system would know exactly where the strike zone was when the ball was released.
