  1. Re:A Canadian On Healthcare on Discuss the US Presidential Election & Health Care · · Score: 1

Ok i'll bite, my father, mother and auntie have all had to go to hospital for major operations (life saving) in the last few years. All had major surgery and major rehabilitation. All had excellent experiences, minimal wait times and great recoveries. All three rated their experiences as excellent. My dad told me his hospital was "like a hotel, it was so nice".

What do they have common? Well, they all live in the UK, a country with a "socialised" health care system.

What else do they have in common? Well they all paid nothing.

In America they would be all footing bills for thousands of dollars. Luckily, they don't.

As for me? Well I live in New York, a few months ago I had all four wisdom teeth taken out by an oral surgeon, cost: $3000. So my dad, who lives in the UK, had a heart bypass and paid nothing, I had teeth removed and paid $3000. Good stuff.

  2. Re:One of the better ideas to fix health care... on Discuss the US Presidential Election & Health Care · · Score: 1

In my opinion you're dead wrong.

I'm originally from England and now live in New York. So I have the experience of both Public Healthcare in the UK (the NHS) and private healthcare in the USA (provided by my company).

I have to say I have only be shocked by my experiences of the healthcare system here. People are literally afraid of ever getting sick, not for health reasons but for financial ones, ie: they won't be able to afford it, even with insurance! My girlfriend broke her arm some months ago (she has insurance) but some days ago got a bill for 1000 dollars for expenses not covered by her insurance. Price in the UK = 0. Also bear in mind that she's a student and already has huge loans taken out.

The costs here also go up almost exponentially if you require more heavy treatment. ie: major operations/rehab, time spent in hospitals. You can be faced with a bill of 1000's dollars quite easily. An example is my girlfriends brother who was in a skiing accident and got a major head injury. The insurance company paid most of the costs but the parents still ended up with a bill of $100'000, seriously.

So they had to take out a loan to pay the bill. Price in England: $0

So basically, in the USA currently, getting a serious injury could quite easily screw you up financially for the rest of your life, even if you HAVE insurance. What a joke!

As for England, my father recently had a heart bypass operation: prince $0. He had an excellent surgeon and the operation went successfully. I've also had two relatives had surgery for breast cancer, all of which went perfectly and was free!

If you have a problem with the free healthcare in the UK you can also pay for private healthcare, most people don't because they are happy with what they get for free!

I've been using Macs since system 6/7 (late 80's early 90's) and there was never anything like an OSX dock in the mac os.

The only thing remotely similar was a favorites menu which appeared in OS 8/9, which was accessed from the Apple menu.

Back then, the standard way of launching applications was either from making aliases on the desktop, or navigating to wherever the install location was.

Will there ever be a faction wide chat channel in WoW. If not, why not? The old LFG system was the closest it got to a faction wide channel not specific to location. Then this was "nerfed" with the release of the LFG tool. Now, trade is used as a semi-universal chat channel in cities.. but obviously doesn't work while not in cities. It's fairly clear to me that the player enjoys and wants this and it is simple to implement. Why does the WoW development team not seem inclined to implement this?

    So apparently it either

    a) Doesnt exist anymore
    b) There are obscure rules for when and where it applies
    c) Some "Genius's" are douchebags

I don't think it's a good analogy at all. For a few reasons.

    a) He doesn't define task. Given that I don't code low level applications I have no idea what constitutes an easy or hard "task" for a CPU. Or how long on average they take.

    b) I know how fast light travels... 3x10^8 m/s. But i'm far too lazy to try and work out how fast light travels from my finger to my nose. Plus, it's so fast that I can't really compare it to anything else. So it's apparently faster than a Pentium 4, but I have no idea how fast light would travel my finger to my nose in the Pentium 4 equivalent test.

    c) I know CPU's in general do things in tiny amounts of time and so hearing this little analogy didn't impress me at all, because I assume that it's normal for CPU's to do things quickly, it's their job after all.

A better comparison would have been, our processor can do X task (describe task) in the time it takes for light to go from my finger to my nose, however a Pentium 4 performing the same task would take the same time as light traveling from New York, to my nose.

  23. Re:Bologna. on Does It Suck To Be An Engineering Student? · · Score: 1

What you experienced here wasn't because modern art was bad, what you were experiencing was due to human psychology, nothing to do with art.

People will always seek to align themselves to a "leader". Logically that leader might talk bullshit (most spiritual leaders) but if they project certain attributes, people will seek to join this leaders tribe. You were in fact exhibiting charimastic traits and showing alpha male characteristics. It is biological advantageous to align with an alpha male (programmed into us through 1000's of years of evolution) and so they were following the path of least resistance.

It is much easier to agree with someone, especially someone in a position of power, than it is to disagree. And actually following the logic of what they are saying goes out of the window. Look at all Jesus's followers, or Buddha, or look at how Joan of Arc duped France into thinking she had visions from god. A more modern example is Andy Warhol. He basically talked shit, made some average paintings referencing everyday items and was revered almost as a god by his followers. It wasn't anything to do with his art being amazing or not, it was his charismatic behavior and idiosyncrasies that drew people to him like moths to a flame.

You struck upon this that one day in the art gallery. You should try and channel this behavior more often as it's an extremely effective way of picking up chicks.
