I really like Unix. Linux was a cheap and easy way to get into unix for a decade or so. Plenty of Open Source packages exist for Windows, but the total user experience just is not there.
Spreadsheets aren't costing money, any more than pencil and paper costs money. It is the bad math that costs money.
I'd bet a LOT of money that fewer mistakes are made with spreadsheets than by people who think they can do perfect math in their head, or perfect long division or multiplication on paper.
I have been involved in several early-stage ventures since the bust and completely agree with the article. With open source software and equipment from ebay, $50k goes a very long way.
Actually making money with your product is still as hard as ever, but the financial risk associated with technology ventures has been greatly reduced.

nah, there is a shortage of skilled Engineers in the USA. Don't believe me? Read today's wall street journal. There was a whole long article about how successful engineers can't get their kids to study the stuff ("but daaaady, the math is too hard!").
Don't let your employees drive "cars" to work, they could show up in a "sedan", "coupe", or "subcompact". Some jokers might even try to arrive in work in an "SUV"!
Stay away from "pencils". You start out on a #2, but the wide array of options will leave your employees wondering if they should be using a #6B or a #9H to fill out their weekly status report.
All they need to do is solve the technological problem of doubling the capacity/performance and the customer is eager to shell out some $$$ to get the new version.
All the chocolate bar maker needs to do is wait until the customer gets hungry and needs a new bar. No R&D needed!
Microsoft is big enough to peer with some of their network transport providers. Compared to proofing, pressing and shipping CDs or DVDs with the latest service pack, internet distribution is cheap, timely and efficient. I cannot recommend shedding any tears for Microsoft's bandwidth bill.
PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION AND INFORMATIONAL MATERIALS - The receipt or transmission of postal, telegraphic, telephonic or other personal communications, which does not involve the transfer of anything of value, between the United States and Iran is authorized. The exportation from the United States to Iran of information and informational materials, whether commercial or otherwise, regardless of format or medium of transmission, and any transaction incident to such exportation is authorized.
(1) It was probably for an early company meeting. Microsoft often casts Steve & Bill in various skits, then plays back the skits at the annual company meeting.
(2) Microsoft makes a ton of money, but spend as little money as necessary (sometimes less).
Fro $50k / hill / month, I'll be happy to play the role of persona non grata.

A major factor in my switch to Macintosh as my primary platform was that I could run both perl and Excel on the same machine.
Maybe if more geeks played with the spreadsheets we could come up with best practices to hand over to the PHBs.
It has been over a decade since the last innovative new spreadsheet - Lotus Improv. Time for something new.

Amateurs are expendable.
It sounds like you've never set foot in New York. That, or you are just doing your part to keep the suburbans out.
The productivity gained by using a mac gives you plenty of time to do cool things.
Naomi would be an excellent wonder woman.
I'm shocked.
I will only buy hemp products from hippies for cash in the future.
naaaaah, I think I *will* buy that coolpix 8400 from amazon.

Because of the enormous effort required to replace the software for such an elaborate system, and for checking a new system out, no change has been made to the hardware since the system began about fifteen years ago. The actual hardware is obsolete; for example, the memories are of the old ferrite core type. It is becoming more difficult to find manufacturers to supply such old-fashioned computers reliably and of high quality. Modern computers are very much more reliable, can run much faster, simplifying circuits, and allowing more to be done, and would not require so much loading of memory, for the memories are much larger.
The scary thing about this is that if you are an Australian ISP, you now have to send people out looking for kiddie porn. yuck.

Silly PC users, powerbooks don't even have mini-pci slots!
And if a flood, earthquake, chemical spill or tsunami doesn't kill off the computers, Moore's law will in about two years. *shudder*
I nominate Jesus.
FreeBSD is dying, but will rise again in a few days...
