Is not a major factor any more as long as there is bandwidth and an airport relatively close by.
Cheaper to pay a Consultant to fly in and get the job done than carry big city overhead.
The problem is getting a reliable match between client and consultant.
But worth the extra look.
What happens to the cell phone companies when wimax networks are rolled out and people are using wireless voip instead of the cell phone network?
The Carriers are looking at the music industry, and are concerned that their customers will flock to some sort of competetive service built on a network they can't control.
Google Ads made it possible to target advertising dollars in a way marketing managers could only dream of before.
Text ads provide pinpoint market segmentation to advertisers, and was probably a strategic move do avoid higher bandwidth costs associated with Images.
Once Google lights up their dark fibre, watch for an increase in Google Banners by companies looking for brand recognition rather than sales.
Those like x10 (maybe your favorite VOIP company)who have no focus and listen to their ad agencies blow millions dollars by tossing stuff at people who are interested in their stuff.
There was one at our office that was glued to the back of a lego robot and used as an attempt to demonstrate wireless video to investors...company now dead:)
If you're pissed at the high price and lack of access to meaningfull, cost effective services on your cell phone, then lets look at some constructive options.
The biggest challenge to breaking the control that the phone companies have is that the phones sold are generally locked to a specific network and contract term in order to offer a low price.
Remember, the majority of users are non-technical and would have no idea how to browse beyond the applications offered on the deck by the phone company, let alone be sophisticated enough to unlock a phone from the carrier network.
There are plenty of applications out there available for free, it just takes the effort to hunt them down.
If every parent knew that there are free games and ringtone alternatives, do you think they would be happy paying the $200/mo. cell bill for their Kid?
The phone companies have managed to build profitable little ecosystem that is focused on delivering brand name entertainment through the phone without much room for independent titles delivered through their provisioning services (which are contracted out naturally).
Enough of the rant...how can it be fixed?
After being way too connected with the damn cell phone and Blackberry, developing data apps in tandem with a couple carriers. I disconnected the lines, and ran from their stupidity.
The phone companies barely know what to do with their networks other than sell games, ringtones and now music to guppies who will eat anything thrown at them.
The experience I've had pushing j2me apps to Carriers is they are extremely detatched from the technical capabilities that their networks support, and are driven by marketing people who barely know how to use email and are focused on getting teenagers to dl crap that daddy will pay for.
I recall a presentation where our "sales weasle" was giving a presentation to the board and a bunch of IM windows popped up with porn links. His buddies were sending him stuff knowing full well he would be in the meeting and not know how to turn it off.
As shogun said, usenet is a central repository where you know where it is rather than having to find it, access it and filter through.
While there is a ton of crap on many groups, others that are well moderated are an extremely valuable resource.
As with anything...consider the source and make your own judgement.
sorry for the confusion...tag line was meant to be a generic comment... sadly it dates me as my first exposure to html applications was in University prior to the release of Mosaic in December 1992
Agreed, but...the challenge in creating something new is channeling a vision and resources.
Much easier to nip at the heels of the incumbent than create a new product strategy.
What do you need OpenOffice to do that it does not right now?
The Westin that I worked at in University, used Lucky #7 as the porn code...btw North American customers usually watched for 15 min.....Asian business men....left the movies on all day
Land phone to land phone...look at prepaid calling cards, dirt cheap when compared to regular phone rates, no monthly service fees...besides who really calls their mom on a video phone
My guess is anyone with enough bandwidth to run a centrally hosted version of OpenOffice would have no problem downloading it.
Those without enough pipe still like the stuff from Bill because they don't know any better.
Just more Hype
The trick is getting OpenOffice onto the store shelf so the masses can save their money.
I thought they were going to let all applications play nice and syncronize Just give them enough time and they will screw this one up too.
Someone else Found it on the digg_

Two types of people these days...Luddites or Geeks...take your pick
When my freaking ISP starts load shaping and my torrents drop down to 1kb/minute I'm not going to be too interested in what they're selling.

OpenOffice more than does the job for most users...why pay the large cash to M$ when OO comes for free DL...or buy a CD-rom from a community distribution partner if bandwidth is an issue.
Food, Water, Shelter, Medicine...this ranks with other projects at the Media Lab
They don't need no stinkn standards
Bang on...they see the ad revenue pouring into Google and figure they can grab some of that on the back of OSS
