Good points. But, the problem with the party line is that the R's are trying to avoid any change while the D's don't really know what to change nor have the political capital to enact real change.

Politics is unfortunately never long-term enough in its objectives. In the healthcare debate, providing more services to more people is more expensive. Providing preventative procedures on people is supposedly less expensive. Something has to happen to reduce the cost of healthcare as a percentage of the GDP, or the cliff of an aging population will not be sustainable.

The issue is what is "earned income" and what is "capital gains." It isn't perfect, but when you are paid in "carried interest" in a job, then why should it not be "earned income?"

Earned income is taxed at the standard marginal tax rates, where as carried interest can be taxed at long term capital gains rates. Stock option compensation by contrast is taxed as regular income. Earned income is subject to social security withholding as well.

There are plenty of ways to minimize tax liability if you have a lot of money. If you earn $1MM in a year and pay $200k in federal taxes, that is still a hell of a lot of money being paid. When you add state income taxes, sales taxes, etc., a heck of a lot of money is still being paid in taxes. If you earn $100k from a regular job and pay $20k in federal income taxes after deductions, you are effectively paying the same rate... what is the complaint?

While I think software patents are pure BS, I don't think cloning a competitor's products is fair game. Patents are specifically intended to inhibit competition, which is why the whole standards process is completely bastardized now. I am not sure if it makes more sense for standards to have patents licensed by consortium at published rates or what, but the current strategy is a mess.

Now, of you look to the future, I am not sure I would support a suit against the SIII, but it still takes obvious design cues from Apple products. It is widely speculated that Apple wants to get anti-cloning license agreements in place; signing that in exchange for a modest royalty isn't that far out of line, although it is much less cash out of pocket when a cross-licensing plan is in place.

The OP's premise was quite flawed-- the strong economies of Europe are strong because of what they did to southern Europe economies. It was a zero-sum game, and the debt is due now. Likewise, the "resource economies" of Canada and Australia (arguably middle east as well, but I can't make a well-informed conclusion there) are starting to sputter based on the need for their commodities being held hostage to growth elsewhere. The US debt situation is generally more manageable than Europe, although the politicians are equally likely to cause major problems.

The best place to move for a 5-year horizon is a growing or transitioning economy (in terms of making the most money anyway). Hong Kong was golden shortly after the handover; Thailand was around 2000; Malaysia was around 2005; Singapore around 2010. Each of these places (well, we'll see on Singapore) "expired" as a great location five years later. If you were well established by that point, you might still come out ahead staying, but if you were chasing a bubble you would have lost.
