There's an interesting video on youtube of a guy that has apparently taken a photo of himself every day for six days, and has collaged it all together.
How about they fix up wikipedia's search function? The other day i tried to go to an article directly, but i made the terrible mistake of forgetting to capitalize one of the words. I found my article about halfway down the page with 50% relevancy.
A younger version of me remembers the fun of multiplayer Diablo II. I read somewhere that Blizz were meant to have "multiple titles" in the works and that they will be announcing a new game in 2007
I'm glad they axed/hiatus'd Starcraft Ghost, because that game had no appeal to me whatsoever (and that this would also mean a later date for SC2). I also read that Ghost was meant to be a stepping stone to SC2 (yes i know, unsubstantiated again but i lost the links). Regardless, i would have to say this is the most anticipated game for me.
It does not look like we will see a warcraft 4, at least not for many years, for that would likely shrink the money sink that is WoW; which is a shame for us non-MMORPG players.
I was at university with a friend who happens to go to a catholic university, who decided to tease me about all our junky food vending machines. My reply was something along the lines of "Better than bible vending machines (joking)". But does anyone actually know of any obscure vending machines like that?
We also have a coffee machine that is notorious for making anything but coffee. Of the 3 times i used it, first it gave me coffee with no milk, second it gave me coffee without a cup (which was quite embarrasing, and no i did not press the "byo mug" button) and the third time also yielded coffee with no milk.
Oops, my bad. I keep forgetting that 2007 is just around the corner.
Why don't they just acknowledge that SG1 is essentially a new Stargate series and just keep it going?
They were actually considering that for season 9, renaming it to something like Stargate: Command - which would apparently give better ratings due to renewed interest. However, i think they are beyond that point now, given that they have been running the 'new' SG-1 for almost 2 seasons. On top of that, talk of a third spin-off predates SG-1's axing.
Personally, im hoping the new series will be more mature in tone, along the lines/closer to that of BSG. Stargate has had almost 13 combined seasons without any truly adult themes/tone, and i think its about time they produce a show that my 5 year old sister can't watch.
Because about 95% of the text on the 25 billion pages indexed by Google consist of the same 10,000 words, determining relevance requires an extremely sophisticated set of methods.
They use a set of nested if-else statements
*ducks*
Well Rounded? Did we play the same game because as i recall pretty much the only way to go online was a telsa coil/tank combo or a tank rush, or some variant of the two.
Lets hope EA can bring back some of the magic with CNC3, they took some steps back from the westwood approach in generals, but now they're taking some more steps forward again such as the return of fmv videos, the token CNC sidebar, etc.
Yet current users have no obligation to do this - and the system works just fine. You could argue that the 'innate invisible feeling to give back' would disappear once consumers have to pay for content, but im willing to bet a large proportion of initial seeds out there are just kids that leave their bit torrent on overnight to download and kids who want to 'get their share ratio' up.
I think your idea of benefits such as free access for having a higher share rate is a great one to say the least, especially if the potential for abuse is removed.
The current party based its election victories on fear and has no connection with the young of Australian, in fact based on the current labour laws they are the enemy of the young who are meant to be exploited as cheap labour.
This is quite true. A few years ago for my first job working at a certain fast food store in Australia that deals with chicken, my starting wage was AU$4.93. And for the record this was at minimum wage for a part time 16 year old (some things have changed since and it's slightly higher but not much better). While things have certainly improved for me now (i'm on $21.50 at my universities bookshop) the situation is still very bleak for industries like fast food (which is a given, but $4.93?) and i feel sorry for the next school kid that gets stuck in my situation with a dead-end $5.20 part time job.
Among other things, i believe university fees here are on the increase, and if Mr. Howard thinks Voluntary student unionism is going to justify that by taking away money from one place and making us pay it in another yet resulting in the deterioration of student services i'd call b/s.
I live in Australia, and this sounds like total b/s. Who is going to enforce these rules? Is the zoo-keeper going to call the police and have us arrested? In my last year of school we were told that some new laws had been passed so that "swearing" or any kind of offensive vocalization could get us severely fined (and they may have also said something regarding some time in lockup or jail, i can't remember). We instantly satired these "new laws" and some of us kept track of how much fines in invisible imaginary spaghetti monster credits we could rack up, and to this day i know of no one affected by these laws.
If that was anything to show, i'm sure these laws will operate in the same way, if they get passed. No self-righteous zookeeper or police officer is going to want to fine someone for something so silly.
Last semester i submitted an easy assignment which among other things involved using CSS. I stupidly tested and viewed the whole assignment in firefox, and lo and behold an hour before the assignment was due i checked it in IE (it was a requirement that it worked in major browsers properly + i live 40 minutes away = not enough time) and my tables were screwed. Yep the IE CSS bug. Suffice to say i lost a lot of marks && learnt my lesson.
Anyway, the relevance is i just checked the same assignment in IE7 and it works fine. I hate you microsoft.
I happen to be at the far end of that age bracket (and shall hence be exiting it in 80~ days), and besides from it being rather troublesome to buy stuff online (my parents don't even own credit cards and i only buy online using ebay/bank transfer) - it would require a further amount of effort to drive down to my local coles and buy an itunes card. I can honestly tell you that 95% of my un-techono saavy friends probably don't even know about the cards. What's more is, they probably wouldn't even care. Why pay for something that you can get for free..?
This brings me to the advertisements that play at the start of DVD's here in Australia; something along the lines of you wouldnt steal [item - ie a car] so dont steal movies piracy is a crime etc etc. The problem is piracy or 'stealing music' is different to stealing physical items. When you download a song your not taking anything from anyone - only potential profit. Its like if you walk into a shop and try to decide between coke and pepsi - whichever you choose, the other is going to lose out on potential profit.
As long as online piracy exists and the only consequence is risking winning the RIAA lottery people will keep doing it. Its also far less troublesome than other 'criminal acts' and has far fewer consequences.
I've bought say, 2 cd's in my entire life. My friends seldom buy CD's, and in fact, i cant remember the last time one of them bought one.
Its gotten to the point where you can download _that_ album that isn't due in your local music store for another week or so, at less expense and effort. It's easier to click a few buttons than take a walk down to the shops.
And i don't know how it works over your end, but i do not know a single person that has purchased music via itunes here. Just having to figure out the payment is onus enough for a person to close itunes and go back to their limewire/whatever program*.
The music industry needs to move on, and stop relying on old paradigms. Companies that previously manufactured cassettes surely jumped onto the cd bandwagon. So why aren't they jumping on the digital bandwagon?
* except for, the one in 100 million probability of being sued by the RIAA
I remember when the PS2 had been announced / its impending release, it was the console everyone was talking about. Ditto with xbox, it had a lot of talk too. Being your typical/. nintendo fanboy i was like omg gamecube is the best!11 but lo and behold, PS2 sold the best.
Lately when i've heard people talking about consoles, its always been the wii. I have one friend that sheepishly bought an xbox 360, but i havent heard anyone talk about them at all other than that. You could say interpretation is a little predjudice, considering i study CS now and most nerds tend to be nintendo fanboys, but i think thus far most of the people i've talked to have been students from all areas. As for the Nintendo 'kiddy' image, i don't see it, nor do any of my friends. It's more like me: "hey lets play super smash bros!" friend x: "nahh tekken!"
I've always thought that given the nerdiness ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H linux expertise within slashdot that some people could band together to form their own little linux venture. Given the expense of windows' and other closed source software i think you could make a hell of an impression demoing linux for a corporation and showing them just how much they could save not having to renew their liscence or upgrading to vista. Once they've migrated to linux, this said hypothetical company could provide support thereafter = 2) ??? 3) Profit!
Look i honestly have no idea how much she makes. But as someone said, its a bit of extra money on the side. I don't know where this assumption came that it was the only income owning and all this math, but in Australia it would certainly pay a few bills:p
My friends mum does quite well for herself on ebay. She buys clothing from op shops and sells them on ebay for higher prices, usually ironing/washing and restoring the clothes herself if needed. She makes at least a few hundred a month, cant really remember how much, but she does very good for herself for a mother of 5 kids.
If they provided different qualities for the movies/etc. I know most of you succesful slashdotters are sitting behind your 1MB/s> connections scoffing at such a suggestion, but not everyone has big fat transfer pipes, and for those people, {myself}, id rather spend a couple of hours downloading something and watching it as a compressed 120mb xvid or 70mb rmvb than leave my 256kbps connection on overnight to download those hunk-a-chunk 350mb/700mb hdtv quality releases.
Spoken like someone who's never had an identity theft problem. You probably don't know anyone either, who's ever had their identity stolen.
You'd be correct in making such an assumption. And until i do, identity theft will continue to be the stuff of blockbuster action movies and wired articles.
That is exactly why I want a full-blown Excel. Do you really want to do your finances online? Have a copy of that residing on google's server where it is stored or "cached"? They put out these services to aggregate your life, to advertize to you. You are there to make money, that's all they care about. Your privacy be damned.
Personally, i think your being far too paranoid here - reach for your tin foil hat, put it on, and take a few deep breaths.
Considering the fact that google is an information technology company, i feel relativly assured that they store my 'data' - email or whatever in a perfectly secure manner. What reassures me is knowing how much shit a company can get in if they loose or missuse such information. Your insurance company keeps all sorts of tabs on you about that sort of details, and yes, they are actually there to make money too (in fact, most corporations are *shock horror*).
I mean, seriously, good luck for the guy thats going to watch me sit down, remember my email and manage to somehow memorise my random numeric password while at the same time knowing that i store my financial data on google spreadsheets.
I already signed up for the beta thing, and yes, i personally can see myself using it. At uni next semester, for my accounting unit, instead of going into excel, making a nice spreadsheet and then having to go into gmail to mail it to myself so i can work on it at home, i can simply visit this site, do my stuff and click 'save'. Easy.
